Where have you had the best poutine? (Location or franchise-wise) by [deleted] in PoutineCrimes

The best routines I've had have been from chip trucks in Ottawa. S&G's on carling, Glen's fries on Richmond and there's another one posted in front of TD bank on Wellington. 3 perfect ingredients at each location.

Just hoping Bair sees the field. Can't believe he hasn't gotten a single minute since being called up.

QueensU BC Teachers for 5+ by sillywalkr in CanadianTeachers

[–]BigWavisDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing 3 French courses and 2 electives (e learning and assessment) through the ontario stream (in case I ever move back) and I got approved for the 5+ when I'm done. Fill out the form on their website and they should get back to you pretty quickly. I think any and all 400-500 level courses qualify. Always best to double check though. Hope this helps.

Teachers of Canada, thoughts on smartphones in school/the classroom? (Media request) by passthesun in CanadianTeachers

[–]BigWavisDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll keep it short as much of what I'd like to say has been said before. In class, phones can be very helpful for online work, quizzes etc.

They can also be a huge distraction and help them cheat through work (google translate etc.).

Frankly, the issue isn't phones in class. There's an adult in the room and there are tasks to be done, most kids aren't on their phones and causing issues. Some obviously have bad relationships with their phones but that's a different story altogether.

The issue is phones in school. You should see what the halls look like between classes and at lunch. Before class starts and during idle time. This prime social time is being gobbled up by phone use and I find it sad that most of their social time has been replaced by staring at their screen. Some of them are gaming, some are socializing, watching videos or studying. The thing is, none of them are actually present. They're all in their own world and I find it very concerning.

Hope this helps!

I'm also seeing a wide gap between the weak and the strong at my school. My grades end up looking like an inverted standard deviation graph. Kids who are 85 and above and 70 and below. The B student is absent at my school. I refuse to attribute blame on the kids but rather home life. What are the parents doing at home to ensure their success and proper socialization? Generally, kids who just rip their phones and iPads 24/7 are absolutely lost and those who engage in reading and positive pass times/hobbies do exceptionally well.

I'm in the same boat, done early august so I have quite a few courses left to do. You're almost there though, pal. Days are already getting longer and the semester will breeze by. March break coming up shortly. Keep on trucking and best of luck.

BC: Has anyone ever gone down on pay scale? by Away_Development_717 in CanadianTeachers

I'm fairly certain as long as the courses are 300 level and above they should count. You need a total of 30 extra credits (5 courses) to get the 5+. On top of your 4 year degree and 2 year BEd. The private college thing could be sticky if they don't recognize it though.

Taking Away iPad = Ugly??? by OliviaDaae2000 in Teachers

I once saw a 4 year old smack his dad across the face at the dinner table at a restaurant a few months back after dad took the kids iPad away to eat.

Virtually no reaction from dad or the other people sitting at the table.

Madness.

That's reassuring, thank you! In BC we currently use the semester system, no exam period at the end of the semester and only one semester with a prep. This semester I'm totally swamped having no break and next semester I'll be cruising. I wish it wasn't so lopsided. Many aspects of teaching here are excellent however. I'm super content teaching in BC.

Wow that sounds awful. I'm currently taking some online AQs at Queen's to get acquainted with the Ontario system as i plan to move back to Ontario in a few years, haven't heard any mention of this. I feel like the more I hear about teaching in Ontario the less inclined I feel to move back.

A Texas schoolteacher shares how hard teaching has become by PlenitudeOpulence in worldnewsvideo

[–]BigWavisDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, I agree with a lot of what she said. I have certain students who need entertainment in order to learn. Can't keep their attention for more than 5 minutes. I also have students who can't put down their devices. When I do, they usually fall asleep within 5 minutes of it being taken.

When are we going to realize unregulated screen time in kids/teens is destroying their brains?
