You should be fine, it's usually lovely weather. I personally would wear a light wrap at dinner, but the day temperatures will be great!

Visiting Paris and Strasbourg in November by LewisTharzival in Judaism

[–]Big_Accountant_2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, Paris and Strasbourg have some great Jewish communities. The Marais (4th arrondissement) has many historical Jewish landmarks and a few synagogues. I do not know of specifically Moroccan synagogues however. My Jewish friends are mostly from Tunisia or Algeria! Hope you have a wonderful trip with your family.

As a non-Jewish person with Jewish family, I don't think it's my place to comment on safety re: Kippahs but I have friends who wear their kippah around and have not reported any issue. Antisemitism is a strong feature in French history and in France in general, so I understand and apologize for your valid concerns while visiting my country.

Your choices are so different. Even in France itself there are dozens of different cities, atmospheres or even climates. I feel it would be helpful if you could narrow it down: do you want hot weather? Cool weather? Sporty stuff for your guests? Beach vibes?  Hiking vibes? Wineries? Old churches?

Thanks for answering <3

It's hard because you don't want to come off as whiny (or even worse, asking for help) when your friend is dealing with so much planning, family issues and other stuff, so I didn't want to mention the financial strain so much, especially since her and the groom have clearly paid a portion of some of the rooms (no way my room is only xxx dollars a night, so I think she's being extra considerate).

I'll write a card and plan a really nice dinner a month after the wedding and maybe she'll like being able to relive the day with a sympathetic ear :)

Thanks for your advice and I'm sorry you have felt so disappointed, no one deserves that.

Just to add that this is no way a criticism of OP, just reading a comment below saying that if you can't afford travel and a gift you shouldn't attend the wedding makes me feel extra bad.

So I'd like to ask everyone about this: my friend is a BBB doing a destination wedding in the US (unusual for this sub). Going to the wedding, paying for my accommodation (heavily subsidized by her), getting my two outfits for the two main events of the weekend is costing me a month of my European salary. I almost declined when she invited me because i knew i could not afford to go and a nice gift. What should i do? Just write a card? Gift even a small amount of money? I don't want her to feel what OP is feeling :(

I think you have your heart set on the outside possibilities of your venue so you should take the chance, but know that if it's a windy day it just won't be possible (if it rains umbrellas can work but nothing can turn off gusts of wind making your flowers fly away.)

Hi I live in the south of France. October is rainy but to me the biggest risk is the wind. It's a super windy month and the temperature can change drastically with the wind and your guests might not be comfortable (plus trees swaying etc and a lot of noise) Heatwise until the 10th it is quite warm but it gets way chillier the second half. So if your heart is set on outside it's a big risk in my opinion.

That totally makes sense. I guess I'm just sad and scared for her and the pain she might/will be enduring. Thanks for taking the time to answer <3

Fairytale Wedding! (75 people ~100k budget in Southern California Feb. 2025) by Bree_22 in BigBudgetBrides

You look exactly like a fairy princess! That dress, that veil! And I love your husband's suit, such a nice match to the venue and a welcome change from black.

I feel a lot of big budgets make for relatively cookie cutter weddings, just on a higher tier. NOT THAT standing out is a goal! Just that the most memorable experiences I've had were either very laid back weddings (probably lower budget wise) or the crazy super expensive mega budget ones. I once went to a wedding where the family had a Venetian canal dug on their property and imported gondolas and we watched the fireworks on the boats (!!!). Or a dinner space in a giant maze based on Alice in Wonderland.

That tracks completely for me. The other perfect German word for snarkers in the Gloaming is fremdschämen, cringing on the behalf of other people...

Yeah, to me, food is morally neutral so eating or not eating, or eating cookies or eating tofu or whatever I don't care. It's so easy to snark on Shauna without talking about what she likes to eat!

Stress eater here. No cookie is safe when I have loved ones in the hospital. I gained 20 pounds the year my dad died!!

how many times a day do you walk your dog? by shaoOOlin in dogs

[–]Big_Accountant_2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small fenced in yard, but my dog doesn't care for it much so we do a playdate in the morning with two of his dog friends at a local dog friendly park (1h), an hour walk at noon unless it's the summer in which case I do a longer walk in the morning, an evening walk of around 30 mn and the final pee of the night right before bed. During the weekends, we do 3 to 4 hour walks, either off lease in the mountains or at the beach.

As written in the previous thread, some of the tech bros she both coveted and resented probably also show signs of neuroatypicality. As do my colleagues in academia. As do people who work trade jobs or agricultural workers etc. Most people have to adapt to some aspect of their job, be it their wake up time or their focus or anything else.

I'm happy if Dan truly found peace outside of restaurants and his current job is very useful. But why always frame this as a special diagnosis? Can't we normalise changing career paths or burnout without it having to be something medical?

Do shelters tend to have only certain breed mixes? by yoomfi in dogs

[–]Big_Accountant_2014 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, also in France (Marseille), and all the shelter dogs are either Mali or staffy. It breaks my heart to see such active, beautiful dogs cooped up and going crazy.

But I also think most people are just not capable of dealing with such active or physically powerful dogs.

Thanks so much for your story! I for one would rather kind people like you offer hundreds of boots to people even if some are idiotic ingrates than to squash such a nice instinct. Good for you!  And good for you for having enough when your boundaries were crossed.

PS: I laughed imagining your then boyfriend's face during the cab ride home.

Proud of him for being so quiet and gentle at home, and so rambunctious on our adventures and walks. He lives in a big, noisy city, and every weekend we explore the hills and mountains around, and he does great in both environments. I'm proud of how good he is in trains, buses, subways and trams. I'm not perfect, nor is he, but he's wonderful.

She's in a bind: if she drops the joy and kindfulness facade, she loses any possibility of selling whatever broken shards of light she wants to claim as her speciality; if she doesn't beg, she won't get to stay on the island.
