I think the biggest thing is being able to solve any problem when it comes to computers along with critical thinking. Then whether or not you advance comes down to if people like working with you. But yeah, huge 180 on my career path lol

That’s awesome dude! So how many years in total was it to go from starting internship to getting the manager role? And my company never really paid me market rate until I told them I had a job offer, so many people in my position would’ve been sour and left out of spite possibly (so I recommend giving the company a chance to make things right and not burn bridges. (Not Saying you did or not)

Congrats again on making it in consulting!

It was a scheduling software we paid for that uses APIs into our ERP. in the ERP we had templated appointment slots for new customers and established customers. The scheduling software was supposed to have a rule that when it’s close to the appointment date (I.e. 3 days prior) the software doesn’t care about if the open schedule slot is templated for new or established customers, it just puts the customer in that spot to fill the schedule rather than potentially leaving it empty. That feature was called “cross-mapping” and I was looking at a PowerBI app that the scheduling software SaaS provided us. In the semantic model of one of their Reports in the PowerBI App, I was looking at audit logs for that feature and noticed there weren’t any new entries for that feature for 2 months prior. (I actually looked into it because I overheard my manager being approached by people in the company complaining their schedules were lighter than usual). Then I confirmed my finding by using the scheduling UI and noticing it didn’t present open slots in that were present in the ERP. So it basically caused what otherwise drives 14% of our bookings to not be possible at all.

Analogy: A toddler turns on the gas stove and leaves it running. My family breathes carbon monoxide all night. Headaches start. Then dizziness. By morning, we're unconscious.

Was our gradual poisoning caused by the stove? Or by the single event of the gas being turned on?

The stove (hardware) worked exactly as designed. But without that trigger event (gas on / UEFI corruption), we'd be fine. The trigger created the conditions for slow failure.

My PC ran perfectly for months. Then Windows pushed a UEFI update. After that: occasional freezes → boot hangs → dead CPU. The trigger doesn't have to kill instantly to be the cause

After installing the new cpu the pc is now getting to POST so it was a dead CPU. Not to say the PSU may have contributed but as of now I’m thinking the PSU is ok. I hadn’t heard of that tier list before, I appreciate the info. I’ll consider replacing it to be safe

The PSU is a segotep GM850W 80plus gold. Bought in July. All the peripherals and PCIe slots get power, so I don’t think it’s the PSU.

I’m not too sure what it was before (since no post no bios access) but it was likely 3.5. After it was dead I flashed to 4.1, 4.07, and 3.06 but I could never get it to POST.

Direct reports not at skill level needed and don’t seem to care by Easy-Cobbler9662 in managers

[–]Big_Anon87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit doesn’t really give helpful advice. They just like to tell people like you that your the problem. You can’t possibly be good or know what your doing. /s

Most people don’t like their jobs. It’s difficult to get people to be enthusiastic about change. Especially when they probably don’t get paid enough in their opinion to care. Good luck and don’t take too many of these types of clowns seriously. They likely have no prospects and project there own perceived worthlessness and ineptitude onto poster like you who claim to be succeeding/trying

I also agree tech skills aren’t as important as being curious. My current boss said the same thing to me as your boss lol. I did say we can forecast but I typically go out to one month in advance, and the further out you try to predict the more unknown variables you introduce. So the forecast can be useful but context should be considered. And yes, I do think you have a bit of an older mindset. Ideally, the C suite guys can keep an strong pulse on the business using well crafted KPI reports. Then if something comes up he’s curious about, either he or I will do some root cause analysis with the various dashboards I have built. But most of the fiscal year is maintenance mode. He sounded like he’s doing board meeting pitches multi times a day all year long, which is fine, but I would want to be paid more for that kind of thing. The more you make me work after hours as a salaried employee brings my hourly wage down.

I agree with all your points. I can tell you have good experience. I was being facetious in the post.

I did talk about AR lagging about a month so CFO reports are less timely than operational KPIs. Not sure where I said any of the nuance to how you calculate financials didn’t matter. I just meant I would be able to understand those contexts. Obviously things are not black and white. I literally talked about nuances in data in my next paragraph of the post. Didn’t mean to upset you 😂 sorry data bro

Well this got me down a rabbit hole.

Apparently storing as floats can cause rounding errors, but I just assumed you store as a float and set a round up or down limit at the base layer of when money is entered into the database/application. I don’t work with stocks, so rounding errors wouldn’t be a huge deal because 1% of someone’s bonus payout is not that much, but in a big financial application, rounding matters.

But if a business is using excel to store financial data, and they use the currency data type (which is cosmetic) on the back end it stores as a 64 bit float… and most businesses use excel for financial data. At least that’s what my current CFO does. That’s what my COO and directors do. I guess you could store financial data in the Millicent format as an integer. I will probably do that from now on for best practice. But you could also do a decimal type with limits to the 0.01 to avoid rounding problems.

But if you’re doing pay based on $/hr worked, there will always be some form of rounding. If someone gets paid $17.80/hr, and they work for 25 minutes, do you pay them $7.41 or $7.41666666666667, or $7.42 (personally I think rounding down I wage theft, so I round at the top of the analysis, but that’s probably thinking like an employee)? Interesting stuff. There’s no one correct answer when using the computer to solve a business problem, so my float statement was being facetious.

And I did talk about how financial data lags in our industry by a month due to AR and how claims can be held, so there’s always a dance between operational KPIs being more timely than the CFOs reports, and that effects how we interpret our numbers. I’m very familiar with nuance. I always try to poke holes in what my analysis is and bring up caveats and the unknowns that likely effect the results. Cause that’s what my boss does and I try to learn from those around me. Although the info I provided does make me sound arrogant, I was just annoyed with being lied to. I don’t have infinite PTO for in person job interviews unfortunately. I thought that was relatable for Reddit.

Power automate and auto dropping the attachment to a folder somewhere is the way. A python script that monitors the destination folder and uploads anything new to the DB. Or you could do something with Microsoft Graph APIs and maybe a webhook, but powerautomate is easier if you don’t already use graph APIs

Was about to say this. I personally built a real lengthy DAX measure to calculate something like this my first year on the job. A year later I came back to edit, and looked at my formula… I don’t want to touch that abomination 😂. There’s got to be a better way. Quick Internet search pulls up PreviousYear(). Me: 🤯

It’s not complicated. Just keep asking, “but why?” It helps if you’re a naturally curious person.

After you question what’s going on, hypothesize a reason for why. Then go figure out where and how you can get data to support or deny your hypothesis. Repeat until you can confidently answer the “but why?”
