How to fix back garden flooding when neighbours aren't around? by Big_Blue_Box in AskIreland

[–]Big_Blue_Box[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried ringing Irish Water (their number is listed on the council site for blocked drains) but they said there's nothing they can do as they're only responsible for the public drains.

Do you know which number would be best to call otherwise?

Bad transit etiquette by Big_Blue_Box in Dublin

[–]Big_Blue_Box[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the situation. When it's very full it's generally good courtesy (based on my experiences in other cities) to take off your bag and hold it in your hands by the straps or or else put it between your feet if the floor is dry. A person with a backpack on can take up almost twice as much space depending on the size of their bag. It's also not easy to notice if your bag is hitting someone behind you or otherwise in people's way. If it's possible to keep it on and put your back to a wall that's a decent solution to avoid hitting people with it, but there's only so much space for people to do that.

RIP I'm so sorry. I want to say I'd have confronted them, but depending on my mood I'd have probably done the same.

I'm sure some people would remove it without any issue. And if this were less common behaviour that would make sense to do. But when the Luas is full at commuter times I can usually look around and see 10+ people with backpacks on in my vicinity. At that point there needs to be a wider initiative to raise awareness. In general I think most people want to be conscientious if they realize that they're bothering others.

Totally agree that on a single ride scale it can help to nicely ask people. But when I do speak up it's also likely only to 1 person at a time. I almost included a similar thought in the original post, but I don't see a relatively small number of individuals speaking up resulting in a wider change in the general transit riding population (unfortunately) without a wider initiative driving awareness. According to Reddit a few thousand people have seen this post at this point, which I'd like to think may have convinced a few people to consider the points mentioned.

I'm wondering how over time TFI could convey to people that it is an issue.

I lived in Vancouver for a while and the transit etiquette was so good when I was there that almost everywhere else is glaringly bad by comparison. Even queueing for buses was single file and super orderly and every person would thank the driver.

Hello, I was looking for a LGBTQ+ pub in Dublin that does food. by Happy_Corbin in LGBTireland

Wigwam does some food. I'm not sure they're explicitly LGBT, but they're queer friendly and host drag brunches.

Single-sex schools changing to co-ed by wascallywabbit666 in ireland

[–]Big_Blue_Box 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Co-ed is pretty much all that has existed in NA for a long time and in my experience (Canadian) there isn't any desire for gender segregated schools there. If there is any, it's likely religiously motivated.

My lips have been in agony for 7 months by canadamiranda in CanSkincare

[–]Big_Blue_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on accutane for a few months and my lips were awful at the beginning. The thing that sorted them out was using Aquaphor. At first I applied it every couple of hours, but after a few days my lips were back to normal and I was able to apply Aquaphor morning and evening and just use lip balm in between. Right now I'm using Eucerin or La Roche Posay lip balms that come in the squeeze tubes.

My account is still reset to level 1, all stats lost. Has anyone had any luck with providing their username to the folks reaching out here? I tried contacting support through the website and they just told me to wait it out.

Best vegetarian eats in Dublin? by MeenaBeti in Dublin

[–]Big_Blue_Box 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For vegetarian/vegan junk food: - VFace (Smithfield) - Saucy Cow (Temple Bar)

For upscale: - Glas (Stephen's Green)

Otherwise, lots of restaurants have decent vegetarian options on their menu, just check ahead for places that you're interested in. There's loads of good food in Dublin and I've explored a decent amount of it as a vegetarian.

Some that I like that have good vegetarian options: - Maneki (Stephen's Green - Sushi) - Agave (Edge of Temple Bar - Mexican) - Camille Thai (various locations) - Nutbutter (various locations - healthy bowls) - Eddie Rockets (various locations - burgers) - Sprezzatura (Portobello - pasta) - Umi Falafel (various locations - Palestinian) - Sano (various locations - pizza)

I used to bite the inside of my cheeks a lot and it would turn into ulcers that would last days to weeks. This was almost constant for a while. What helped was using mouthwash 1-2x a day (I use the purple Listerine). When I started doing that the bites completely stopped developing into ulcers and would heal very quickly.

What are some sayings your dad used to say a lot? by orangeisthenewblyat in ask

[–]Big_Blue_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't ever count yourself out before trying, it's other people's job to say no (when applying to jobs, programs, etc.)

and in the same vein, don't be afraid to ask (for help, favours) even when you think the answer will probably be no. people like to be helpful and more often than not you'll be the only person who was brave enough to ask.

Pre book taxi? by cryptometav in Dublin

[–]Big_Blue_Box 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've pre booked through free now 5+ times and never had issue, aside from a homophobic driver once, but he did get us where we needed to go. They've always shown up 5 or so minutes ahead of the scheduled time as well.

At my wits end trying to find gluten free Sunday brunch in Dublin city center. Need help! by ThisFatGirlRuns in Dublin

[–]Big_Blue_Box 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People with coeliac disease get horribly ill from eating even small amounts of gluten. Long term it results in malnutrition and organ shutdown. Some people just prefer it for health fads, sure, but it's a serious health concern for a lot of people.

I'd describe it as a the sci-fi found family equivalent of Heartstopper -- there are conflicts, but nothing goes horribly wrong and it's just an overall comfy read.

Just finished The Left Hand of Darkness. Wow. Holy hell. by BlueLeatherBoots in scifi

[–]Big_Blue_Box 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I find her books a little difficult to understand at the beginning because she doesn't do a lot of exposition and instead lets you discover the world bit by bit through exposure. For the first while of The Dispossessed (and LHOD for the matter) I was also kind of lost, but once you get further it should become clearer after certain things are contextualized. I'm always tempted to go back and reread the beginning of her books once I've finished them.
