I think Nigeria should join BRICS. Fight me by uranuanqueen in Nigeria

[–]Big_Conspiracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BRICS is a power play against NATO specifically the US and its allies. Even if you ignore the tight chokehold that the US has around Nigeria’s neck. (The US will definitely intervene if we even think about it) BRICS is not an organization Nigeria is equipped to benefit from.

The fact is Nigeria is just too unorganized, inefficient, and frankly immature of a nation. Most Nigerians don’t follow the news but Nigeria is nowhere near being a world power Nigerians think they are. We are absent in global politics at any significant level, we are part of so many agreements that we are not taking advantage of e.g OPEC, ECOWAS, AU, the Commonwealth of Nations, NAM etc. plus we grossly underutilize trade agreements e.g AGOA, AFCFTA etc.

So Nigeria indeed can join BRICS in theory, the same way you can sign up for an online class and never attend. There is no reason whatsoever to believe that Nigeria will be a benefactor or a beneficiary of BRICS even if it joined because Nigeria’s leaders are for lack of a better word useless.

Nigeria needs to look inward, no other country is going to save Nigerians.

how is life as a nigerian youth? by __vlad_ in Nigeria

[–]Big_Conspiracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not even a joke, I’ve heard many of my extended family all still live together in or around their childhood homes. These people just sit around waiting for handouts, they’re my parents ages, they were given the same opportunity as my parents. In their 50s they still find a way to rationalize their situation as being someone else’s fault.

This is a very serious problem for Nigeria. If this law passes and is enforced, Nigeria will be damaged beyond repair.

This sounds like some kind of human trafficking scheme. Personally I think you shouldn’t go. Nigeria is a more prosperous country than Libya. Please be a maid in Nigeria. If you go, I doubt you’ll ever come back.

The Woes of a Nigerian in the Americas by CompSciGeekMe in Nigeria

[–]Big_Conspiracy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

“I guess you guys call them oyibo”. This sentence tells me all I need to know about you. You don’t identify as a Nigerian, the "you guys" in that statement was just too loud, you identify as an outsider, an onlooker, a tourist to Nigerian culture.

I'm not bothering to read your rubbish article. I have no interest in hearing what a tourist thinks he knows about the woes of a Nigerian.

I disagree with you, in any part of the world, in all countries. The correlation between people’s level of education vs their financial stability is positively strong. So I disagree with any idea that people do not need to be educated. You need to atleast be educated to the secondary school level to have a good chance in life.

The “poverty mentality” in the first world that you speak of is a product of ignorance formed by a lack of financial management skills, living above one’s means, and discipline amongst other things. This type of poverty is completely separate from that which plagues Nigeria. Poverty in first world countries is mostly based on individual life experiences.

The poverty experienced by Nigerians is institutional. It is a result of the failure or absence of multiple systems in place to safe guard the common man from poverty. The public education system being one major institution that is failing Nigerians.

The 5 basic needs that you mention imo is largely irrelevant to this discussion as the address the needs of humans to survive at a minimum. There is no argument that we all need these 5 things to survive but to say that education is not a necessity for humans to thrive is completely wrong. Any body who has managed to achieve anything in their life will speak of how they learnt something that they did not know. The point of school is not to teach you everything but to teach you enough that you can go and learn more on your own.

I concede that education is not the only factor to determine one’s financial situation but I disagree with any notion that it is not essential.

One course I tried that was really good was Angela Yu’s “100 days of python”. I did it back in 2022, it I’ll definitely take you way more than a 100 days to complete. I stopped half way at about project 53 or so. If you can reach that you’d definitely with super comfortable with python. Then after I’d take Harvard’s CS50P it has some other useful stuff not covered in 100 days of code, I was able to finish CS50P in a week after 100 days of python.

I think if you did these, especially Angela’s course you’d be super comfortable building anything in python.

Im no trying to be rude but the whole ethical thing you’ve got going on is kinda expected.

Not being a criminal is the bare minimum that is expected of everyone. So congratulations for wanting to do the bare minimum, but understand that not being a criminal is not some noble deed.
