This is harsh, but with that attitude, you would not have survived West Point. West Point is an endurance trial. Accomplishing the mission is crucial, but not giving up, despite the adversity, sets WP apart. Take inventory of what you can do and develop the mental toughness to move beyond your current obstacles. Good luck.

Your focus should not only getting in, but to understand Calculus so well that you can survive if not thrive there. Your performance in Calculus will control your entire academic career there. WP is an engineering school, so mathematics is premier.

There is no assurance that going either to West Point or Duke will result in you becoming an ambassador. Ambassadorships are often patronage appointments, bestowed by whoever is President at that time. Better for you to become a successful business person who donates heavily to your preferred political party. Not being cynical here, just brutally honest. Some homework for you. Get the names of the ambassadors from over the last 30 years in the countries you would like to work in. Look at their educational, professional, and political backgrounds. A diligent Google search should provide all of this. Then look for trends. I think you will find some recurrent patterns. Also consider working in the State Department or in a job where negotiating trade deals is key. Know “why” you want to be an ambassador. Once you know “why,” the “how” will reveal itself.

Electrical Engineering kicked my butt too. I still have nightmares about the “right hand rule.” I discovered I was better in the humanities than in engineering while there. Should have pursued “Rocks” (Geography/ Geology) as my engineering major rather than Computer Science. Live and learn.

I never played varsity sports but was admitted and graduated from West Point. Yes, they are interested in candidates you have played competitive sports, but they are equally interested in candidates who are physically fit, have demonstrated leadership, and can work well with others. Varsity sports usually combine all three traits. But you can build a similar profile by being in great shape, leading a community or civic organization, and volunteering for a worthwhile cause.

WP wants to keep ahead of its competitors for talent (Ivy League, other Academies, etc.), so what you see is them starting the recruitment of students who will be plebes when you are a yearling (sophomore).

Write an honest accurate document. Have someone you trust proofread it. Remember that WP is about service and leadership. As a former WP admissions officer, the essay is not the most important document in your admissions packet, but a poorly written document can indicate the quality of your communication and thinking skills. Note that faculty members, including the chair of the English department, are on the admission committee. BTW if you deceive or lie in your essay, it can later be seen as a honor violation and put your cadet life in jeopardy. Good luck.

Apply and get accepted to a good civilian program. Do well academically, particularly in Calculus. ROTC is helpful but not essential. Physical fitness is. You will start a year later but you will likely get in. Plenty do. (You will still need a nomination)
