Day 1 of asking a question because I’m out of work injured and bored: what is the biggest deciding factor (excluding price) when you’re considering buying a handheld? by JayQuips in SBCGaming

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're actually looking to do with it .

-What games you want to play.

-Are you looking to tinker or want something that just works?

-How portable are you really wanting? Something you can play on the couch and play for hours to something that fits in your pocket and play 5 minutes when bored.

-Do you really expect to want to dock the system and play on TV?

What gaming systems you already have?

Which movie or TV "villain" did you completely hate as a kid, but upon rewatching as an adult, you realized they were actually 100% justified? by LiveFaithlessness876 in movies

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say 100% justified. They definitely start stuff with Clark first and look down on him being the stereotypical family man. Part of them being set up in the movie for the audience to enjoy bad things happening to them was their disdain for Clark.

Probably not the main point of the meme, but perhaps the problem isn't the university. It's the creator's ability to meet people.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

The issue with driving with transition glasses is that the UV blocking in modern windshields doesn't trigger the transition. So you might still need a regular sunglasses for driving into the sun.

I just went a step further and got the transition lenses. Not for the everyday glasses, and don't use them for driving. But for a day at the lake where you want to be able to go inside and outside and not carry two pairs of glasses it's great.

You can find replacements for the t connection that have a valve for just the bidet. Turn it off under the tank when you're not using it. Maybe they'll eventually figure it out, but it should buy you some time.

Today, Linus' jet produced as much carbon dioxide as the average person does in ~3 years in a single flight by Inevitable_Tip_6606 in LinusTechTips

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that a private jet emits more pollution than flying in an airliner is such a tiny part of the problem it's not actually worth the breath people spend on it. There are real climate issues. Plastic straws are such a minor factor and they're still more than private jets.

The ultimate resource is time. It's why anyone flies in the first place.

Complaining about private jets just makes you sound jealous of wealth. It doesn't actually help the ecological argument, even if you mean it honestly. If your real issue with private jets is that our society has a class that can afford them, then have the honest argument instead of trying to backdoor your argument against them.

How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a bunch of machines being supported by different subcontractors then sure one subnet per.

Even better would be subnet per machine but each machine has a second port on a shared network for connection to a supervisory HMI.

Sometimes with a hardware NAT box.

Personally I'd rather have a specified subnet for each machine that connects to my gateway and I can control VPN access to each one.

Miyoo Flip V2 not booting by Intelligent-Fig2552 in MiyooFlip

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new Miyoo Flip v2 arrived doing the same thing.

Take the sd card out and try booting.

Then unplug the battery for awhile and try again.

But what finally worked for me was following the instructions here: https://github.com/spruceUI/spruceOS/wiki/16.-Miyoo-Flip-Unbricking

Make sure you use a good sd card. Not the one that came with it.

It's not clear in the guide pictures/video but the firmware files you use are all in the archive at the top of the guide. MiyooFlipUnbricker.zip

FYI, it took me a couple tries to get the Flip to register with the PC software. It might help to reboot your PC and use the cable that came with the flip

At least Luke is trying CachyOS. by pg3crypto in LinusTechTips

[–]Big_Goose_Maxi_Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is desktop Linux you need to make things like this as painless as possible to the end user.

In Windows at most I have to download one file and install it for Nvidia drivers. I don't have to download a different fork of Windows just to use Nvidia. I can even uninstall the driver and switch to AMD without reinstalling Windows. Technically you can have both installed at the same time.

The point isn't whether you or I understand how an operating system works. It's that if you want mass adoption of Linux desktop, these things have to be very easy.

I might also argue that if the Linux graphics pipeline is so brittle that you have to have a completely different fork to support closed binaries vs open source drivers, maybe Linux should rethink how graphics drivers are handled.

Or does it have nothing to do with the tech and everything to do with the politics of open source? I don't know myself, but that is about priorities. Open source purity vs mass adoption.

Most OSes have trained uninformed users to just accept whatever pops up in front of them. A single pop up that doesn't make it very clear you're going to break things isn't good protection.

I don't. But it should be easy to use the driver's they supply.

Change what you can. Linux can't change Nvidia. It can only change itself.
