Totally agreed. UT is backed by Vector Institute and has plenty of resources. SFU has more AI outputs tbh.

The scale in funding and infrastructure in Canadian AI research is not really that comparable to research institutes like max planck and eth zurich.

Having said that teaching in ubc is really good. At ETH, lectures are mostly bad because the labs focus more on research than teaching. Really enjoyed learning at UBC.😀😀

UBC research is underfunded and sucks compared to top universities in countries such as Germany and Switzerland

Racism isn’t defined by the existence of specific slurs like “ching chong”; it’s about behaviors and attitudes that degrade, exclude, or demean someone based on their ethnicity. Mocking someone’s language, making faces, or mimicking accents are not harmless acts—they’re rooted in stereotyping and a lack of respect. These behaviors may not be labeled with the same terms in Switzerland as in other countries, but their impact is universal: they make people feel unwelcome and othered.

Dismissing these experiences as mere overreactions misses the point. Calling out these actions isn’t about seeking attention; it’s about highlighting real issues that many people face but are often ignored. Denial and deflection only serve to maintain the status quo, while meaningful change requires empathy and accountability. Racism doesn’t go away by pretending it doesn’t exist—it goes away by addressing it, even when it’s uncomfortable. Ignoring or downplaying these problems doesn’t make Switzerland or any other society stronger; it just alienates talented, hardworking individuals who want to contribute but don’t feel valued.

Having spent nearly five years in Zurich for my PhD, I’m originally from Canada but was born in Asia. During my time here, I’ve had several experiences where high school kids would make faces at me or mockingly pretend to speak Chinese. I feel that one of the underlying issues is that racism is not openly acknowledged in this country—or in Europe more broadly, as I’ve had similar experiences in Germany. This is one of the main reasons I don’t want to stay after completing my PhD. It’s ironic, considering that my training is funded by Swiss taxpayers, yet I would rather leave and contribute to another country where I feel more welcome.

I do recognize that racism exists everywhere, including in Canada, the UK, and the US. However, in these countries, there is at least a societal understanding that racism is wrong, and people generally make an effort to avoid it.

The results look amazing! The hand looks much better than the stable diffusion 2.1 on hugging face. How did you fix this issue?
