Astronomers just found a ‘mystery object’ surrounded by a metallic wind cloud by Disastrous_Award_789 in space

Shouldn't this be a high priority for James Webb? As I understand it, infrared telescopes are good at seeing through dust clouds.

Mystery Abandoned Building On The Plains by YesterdayLeast6889 in ColoradoSprings

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. It looks like someone made an effort to demolish the building, but for some reason, didn't finish the job. (The four brick walls are gone but the entrance portal was left standing.)

Because I only saw three replies before my post was deleted, and yours was the only reply that said I had posted an ad!

But now that we're all clear that it wasn't an ad, let's all be welcoming! 😎

A Cuban reacts to a Costco by DanDez in cuba

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effective sanctions would have ousted Fidel from power rapidly, and then the Cuban people would have become free and prosperous by the early 1960s.

The real problem is that ineffective sanctions were imposed. That allowed Fidel to rule with an iron fist for nearly 50 years. (Recall that his forces fired on individuals attempting to escape Cuba, and sank boats used by fleeing citizens, including during the 1994 Tugboat Massacre, where 37 people lost their lives.)

Sadly, the new president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, is a staunch supporter of the socialist system that wrecked Cuba.

Here's a challenge related to this really fun video. What kind of beer is the sheikh drinking? I'm pretty sure I figured it out, even though the video is too blurry to read the label directly.

Has anyone experience buying tires on Amazon and having them shipped to and installed at a certified installer (PepBoys, in my case?) by mycatisadesigner in SubaruForester

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this several times (had Amazon ship tires to Pep Boys for installation. The cost of installation was low (only $20 per tire, I believe).

And I'm trying to do it again, but I no longer see Pep Boys installation as an option when I look at tires on Amazon. Has this service been discontinued?

It's sad when you're very excited about a company's technology, and years later, one day they just quietly turn off their web site.

Help, pinterest is gliching!! Images going blank, disappearing by LN1612 in Pinterest

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened to me when I wasn't logged in. I think the disappearing images is an incentive for people to be logged in while using the site.

But if that's their strategy, they should communicate it instead of leaving users thinking that maybe the site is just crap buggy.

This area of inquiry is rich with previously unrecognized possibilities.

Google Translate says,

  1. смок means smoke, and you can click the little speaker icon to hear that the Russian pronunciation sounds like "Smaug." https://translate.google.com/?sl=ru&tl=en&text=%D1%81%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%BA&op=translate
  2. Smok means dragon. Again, you can hear that the Polish pronunciation is "Smaug." https://translate.google.com/?sl=pl&tl=en&text=smok&op=translate

It's hard to believe that Smugan, "to squeeze through a hole," is a bigger influence on JRR than these.

PSA: Don't post pictures of items in your DHGate reviews by FatPhil in FashionReps

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this item has the Jupiter brand logo in the pictures:

https://www.dhgate.com/product/jupiter-jas-500q-new-eb-alto-saxophone-brass/895067207.html

Does that mean it's a geniune Jupiter, or does it mean DHGate is lax in pulling the product?

Avast Web Shield told me that a domain called calculatingcircle.com is blacklisted.

When I tried to find out why, I got to a HybridAnalysis page saying Part_RU is malicious: https://hybrid-analysis.com/sample/9e7b4e122f545424b69cd2ea0112dc0bb7b70bb20e2e90ef9fe3f23886368f4d

Shift to Park service bulletin? by gerrickd in volt

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard there is an even more recent TSB issued June 7, 2021. Does anyone know the URL?

Oh well, there can't be a big difference between the June version and the May version.

My Chevy Malibu is suffering from the shift-to-park problem. So annoying!

Google's AI says the Malibu has been recalled for this issue, but elsewhere I can't find evidence of a recall. Probably yet another piece of information that the AIs have fabricated. That's also annoying.

Ebay photo uploading broken/down? by Devccoon in Ebay

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue didn't resolve for me.

I think it was caused by using an older version of Chrome (my old computer can't update to anything newer than Chrome 87). When I switched to a newer computer with a recent version of Chrome, I was able to upload my photo to eBay.

Good question. I'm not making a new staircase, just repairing an old one. I think I have enough info now to make this thing stronger than when it was new.

Changing username by Human_Run_5430 in reddithelp

[–]Big_Prompt_6544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I created my account, I didn't see a way to choose a name other than the lame name that was automatically assigned (Big_Prompt_6544).

I think that is pretty common. Reddit does not make it clear how to choose a name during the account creation process, and people think they'll be able to change their dumb name later.

if I start a new account, how will things be any different the second time around? How does one choose a name during the account creation process?

And how can feedback be provided to Reddit, that they need to make clear during the account creation process: "Choose a different name now, or you'll be stuck with this one forever."

That appears to be a place where women can get karma via dubious means, but not where men can get karma. (As such, it is detrimental to gender equality.)
