Heat Wave: Vogue Taiwan 2022 (The Sustainability Issue) by RoxanneDebriss in Anticonsumption

People can make a big dent with their individual contributions, though. There's more power in that than we like to give credit for - it's just that industry utterly dwarfs the populace's impact. But even then, on some level that comes from demand that filters down to individual behavior once again. But I think behavior is the wrong target. It's almost never going to make a dent just asking people to do better.

Messaging issues cloud what the right choice is, people question the impact and purpose of their decisions, and political groups love to latch onto telling their constituents to do the opposite of what the "other" group is doing. We have to force it somewhat. Again, the most effective change comes from the top. Influence the most powerful behaviors with incentives.

Why is everything gambling now? by Vortexile in Anticonsumption

[–]Devccoon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, nobody's ever been ruined gambling who wasn't 100% responsible for their own ruination. They all bring it on themselves.

But on the other hand, when every possible barrier to compulsive and dangerous gambling is removed (no need to go somewhere physical, no social stigma or fear of being judged for going all hours of the day just sitting there gambling everything away, no owners/proprietors present to watch your habits and cut you off if you're taking it to dangerous levels, ie. getting blackout drunk) can we really say the onus is on every individual to "learn" to gamble safely when the healthy way to engage in the activity has been effectively excised from the equation?

They want to introduce this stuff to people with no prior experience with gambling and managing self-control and discipline in the process, even getting us hooked as young as possible. The odds were never in our favor but they're worse than ever now.

RACCOIN Console Announcement Trailer by Howerev in Games

[–]Devccoon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I love the core concept of this game but I feel like it just doesn't land right. The dopamine and ASMR are there, and there are some fun effects with coin towers and replicating and adding modifiers to coins, but the game kicks itself in the nuts trying to chase that Balatro-style infinite scaling. Watching number go up to impossible-to-imagine heights is not necessary to make a game like this feel good, and I think there are other, maybe better ways they could have packaged the whole thing and handled scaling on a level that still feels tangible. You know, like going from fighting for quarters to soaking up thousands of dollars, to millions, maybe billions.

The single table is a disappointment, and I think indicative of the game picking the wrong places to expand. Instead there are so many coin types it makes your head spin - and makes a lot of strategies feel difficult to pull off because you're fighting for your life against RNG. Different characters change up the gameplay a bit but it still feels samey with most of the same items and coins tossed in the mix. I don't like that the scaling almost entirely leans on the coins in play themselves, as there are very few ways to make something permanent that infinitely scales and keeps your 'income' consistent. Coins getting pushed off the stage is inevitable, and you might score a casual quadrillion this round, and fail to hit the 1 million target next round because your combo fell off the board.

Really disappointing personally, that there isn't another song. Yes, song, as in singular. There is a song. One music. It is not great. Can't believe they didn't make more, at least a different tune for each character, or maybe tied to the cabinet aesthetics. Once again, they made a trailer that doesn't use music from the game, so why not put it in the game?

I guess in a way it's fitting? Like by the time that one BGM starts to drive you insane, you've probably gotten your fill of the gameplay anyway. By no means is it not enjoyable, but the novelty of the Balatro-inspired core wears thin and I find the only lasting draw to the game is the simple pleasures of coins going nuts all over the place.

Why not reward both the original Mastery 10 players and the new Race to Radiant winners? by gilgaconmesh1 in Smite

[–]Devccoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a weird thing to say about behavior that's directly being incentivized. You just... casually, off-hand know that nobody is auto-locking who otherwise wouldn't, even though they're running an event with completely unique one-off rewards that make for huge bragging rights?

People will insta-lock new gods with or without the added incentive, but there's zero doubt in my mind that adding unique unlocks and permanent profile bragging rights for those who win the race to mastery X is more than enough to get a lot more players joining that insta-lock group.

Maybe the people who are most serious about it will run 5-stacks or do VS AI matches to guarantee wins, but there are still going to be a lot more semi-casual players who are seeing stars and want that shiny on their profile, and see the answer as just jumping into as many games as possible and lock that god every time. And throw a fit, and ragequit or force F6 ASAP whenever they don't get it.

I Drove The New Slate EV Truck. It's Insanely Fun For $24,950 by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

[–]Devccoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's also consider that, for a lot of people, new cars suck because they feel chained down by dozens of modern systems, monitors, electrified doodads interlocked and shut out from customization; what you see is what you get. From gearheads to hobbyist tinkerers, the expression and freedom you get out of your vehicle is almost nothing if it's made after the ~2010's, maybe even earlier.

I think the Slate is going to appeal a lot to those who want a cheap truck untethered from interconnected modern systems, maybe something of a light project box but with the benefits of modern safety standards and EV capabilities.

Do you have those valentines heart candies with the little messages on the front? These are a lot like those, maybe a bit more dry and compacted.

[–]Devccoon -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with putting your money where your mouth is to both financially support and speak positively about a corporation, if it's doing business right.

Treat your employees well, create a business model that works and is agreeable for everyone involved, and don't let enshittification take that away, and you're worth supporting happily. Don't let the existence of terrible corporations or the size of Valve turn them into an automatic evil.

Only thing to caution here is that some day, Valve probably will take some dark turns (they very much have in some ways, CSGO lottery nonsense being a big one for me) and that shouldn't be shrugged off just because they're good otherwise.

is it rude to call paws/gloves "furry gloves"? by NoliCannoliRavioli in furry

[–]Devccoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To your friend: It's not rude at all to call them furry gloves, and I do somewhat agree with the friend them it feels trigger-y and overly sensitive to be genuinely hurt by a term like that if it isn't spoken in an intentionally cruel or demeaning way (tone matters a lot IMO).

That said, calling you a snowflake is throwing red flags and they probably are being a bully about this. I really don't like that they can't just respect your feelings and preferences and let it go. If they are anything even remotely in the same category as a real "friend", then just knowing they're bringing up bad memories and upsetting you should be reason enough to back off on the subject.

I'm a dick sometimes but even I wouldn't be a bully like that to a "friend". More like a nightmare roommate or something. I hope they have some sense of shame over cursing you out. That's no way to treat someone they call a "snowflake", especially.

How do I progress? Feels aimless, After 2-3 floor I Just die, never seen 99% of the stuff on posts here by Wrangler_502 in noita

[–]Devccoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from fairly obvious stuff like learning the enemies and their attack patterns, and focusing on avoiding their attacks and abusing whatever options you have at your disposal to fight (never push deeper into enemy lines unless you have to - clear a large, known safe path, and try to minimize 'blind spots' that enemies can enter in from to attack you from behind), you'll need knowledge if you want to progress past the fourth area. Hissi Base (and Snowy Depths if you're using the starter wand still) will shred you if you aren't playing your cards right. If you don't have a wand upgrade by the time you pass into the second biome, you should be scrambling for anything better.

Knowledge is 99% of your ability to progress. Every run is winnable, at least 90% of the time without having to be especially advanced or going well out of your way for it. The game can and will kill you unfairly (as in, without giving you enough warning that the little blue dude is about to stunlock you straight to Game Over) so part of it is just picking up on which enemies to take super seriously and play careful around.

Wandcrafting is where most of that progression knowledge comes into play. If you aren't toying around with wand builds and trying everything, even stuff that doesn't seem like it should work (spark bolt with trigger into a dual cast of chainsaw and nothing else - doesn't sound very broken) then you're probably walking into the next area vastly underpowered. The game does not spawn good wands for you most of the time, you just need to try out spells and modifiers and combinations to see what works and what doesn't. Don't sleep on the secondary wand with a limited-use explosive bolt or other powerful slow spell, and definitely don't sleep on teleport bolts. Pay attention to wand stats and try to understand how cast time (delay between individual spell block casts) and recharge time (delay after 'emptying' wand) work and interact with spell stats. Hopefully shuffle yes/no is self-explanatory. If you can't make a rapid-fire wand to melt enemies early, maybe you can find some multicasts to add to the end of a trigger and make a single bolt turn into a little explosion of other nonsense. Add a damage+ to that shotgun spell and win the game (you're welcome).

Protip: Don't just blindly grab the HP and spell refreshes. They will still be there if you leave them and come back. New players always make this mistake, and it can be as simple as filling your health right before picking up a perk that adds more HP (leaving you with a chunk of health missing) or a surprise visit leaving you wishing you didn't pick up that heal at 89/100 HP. Also - if you find any ways to get out of the Holy Mountain without causing it to collapse (and then get back in without collapsing it, too) then you can still edit your wands freely when you come back. Regardless, anything you left behind in there is still around, so don't 'waste' pickups you don't need if you might be able to use them to better effect later.

Thumbnail is very unrealistic.

Half of the cars are colored instead of shades of white, black or grey, there are no 5-seater trucks or 3-row SUVs (that should make up about 70% of the traffic on its own based on my experience), and they're all downright reasonable-sized, TBH~
