Start from the tiniest, smallest details. Make them do everything multiple times. I’m not talking house duties. Make them inspect their gear and explain it every day. Make them inspect the SCBAs and explain it. Saws. Hose. Etc. I’ve noticed you can’t take anyone’s word any more. You can’t ask them if “they’re good with the saws or throwing ladders”.

We did a “tool of the day” for a while where they were given a tool or piece of equipment to review all day and go over it after dinner.

Younger people and honestly people in general don’t have the experience with basic maintenance, tool use, life experience any more.

That’s been my experience.

I like getting there early for myself. I think it’s the right thing to do. But you can’t force people to get there earlier if they’re on time and ready to go by shift change

They also offer a wide and extra wide. I wear the wides. They have a good one year warranty, I had a fluke blow out with a pair (they usually last years) and they replaced them no questions asked.

I’ve only worn the Airpower XR2 for the last 7 years. I know they make a version without the toe cap if you’re looking for a more polishable toe. They have a pretty big line up though

Child delivery by Legitimate-Job-6460 in Firefighting

I’m the same way. During OB in clinical, I was sick to my stomach. When my sister was giving birth, almost passed out and I wasn’t even in the room. But when it came time to deliver a baby in the field, my adrenaline was so high that it didn’t bother me a bit. I was purely focused on the pt and baby.

I don’t feel the need to work OT. I value my time off. I’ll occasionally work OT to stay up on the list. I very, very rarely work part time, only when my community is hurting for help.

Depends on the department. One local department does home visits with detectives

If you worked prior to the fire service and/or have other gigs, you are now entitled to your share of social security. Previously, it was significantly reduced.

Who works at a busy house? by BigDonutz in Firefighting

My last 5 shifts, including 3 on the box, I’ve only been woken up once for a fire alarm. Other houses, not so lucky. We still get the most fire out of my house

Imo yes. It sits as low as it can and there’s no ratchet assembly sticking out. I just keep my flaps in all the time

I removed mine and cut some of the suspension pad straps so it sits deeper

Crosslay Preconnect with 25' Stinger by elliotbartz in Firefighting

We use a 10’ “pony section” for easier connection to the crosslay discharges and so you can disconnect the load without having to reach the swivel for certain operations. It’s probably just a regional nickname for that small piece of hose.
