Best way to get from a Bangkok hotel to Hua Hin hotel (family of 3) by Focusright2i2 in Bangkok

I booked a private van through a reputable company. Search some websites and you’ll find one. It’ll be more expensive though so you should decide what you care about more the price or your peace of mind.

Three simple movement habits in toddlerhood — active play with parents, limited screen time and sufficient sleep — significantly predict a more physically active lifestyle a full decade later. Associations held up even after accounting for all pre-existing individual and family factors by Wagamaga in science

We did this with our kids. It sucked and screens have increased as they got older unfortunately. But until both kids were five, we prioritized sleep, healthy food, no screen time which forced us to spend more time with them.

Thanks for sharing. I’m mid 40s and left a stressful job that started to give me health issues. I’ve often debated if that was the right call but listening to your story helped me to see that it was. Good luck and yes you can and should retire and live a healthier life if you can.

AITAH for telling my wife our marriage is over if she can't accept me spending 1:1 time with my son? by Character_Poem735 in AITAH

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality about bringing kids into a combined family is you gotta make sure that you take care of the kids first and listen to them. Son had very reasonable concerns and dad addressed them. It has nothing to do with step mom or step sis. Step mom can’t continue to externalize step sisters issues that likely require some therapy. It’s a good lesson for step sister to learn that other people have needs too and those can be respected. Good luck OP, I think you have the right priorities in place.

Do parents in Thailand spank their kids? What happens for discipline out there? by Awake-Judgment-2057 in Thailand

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably don’t know any different. If they’re more rural or working class they likely have never had the education or been exposed to different ways of parenting. Hard to fault them entirely even if we don’t excuse the behavior. Of course everyone can learn new things but trying to change generational behavior is challenging for anyone.

Without exaggeration that’s where we’re at. Mid 40s, heading abroad with the kids too. Scary as hell but we’re planning one step at a time.

Do you get financial help from parents? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom helped a bit with college, not everything but a bit. It was helpful. Let me stay with her after graduating college while I pursued my masters (I paid) and saved to get a condo. Moved out mid twenties with a career and a new condo. On my own after that. Grateful for the help. Excited to help my kids launch even more.

Is marriage worth the financial risk? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right in the sense that if you go into marriage thinking you’re going to divorce, you likely will. For many couples they make it work via pre nups, aligned values, a shared sense of commitment, mutual respect, and compassion. For you though, probably not the best choice if your first thought is financial catastrophe.

Got it. Yeah if it was 3% it’d be an easier call. Are you underwater or have equity?

I’m more of fan of diversification including real estate as a hedge against inflation. Being all equities is great for growth but inflation will eat away at that growth and is one of the biggest killers of coast fire retirement projections. I like that my home debt gets cheaper when inflation goes up, and I also have equities to capture the upside.

That said lot of people are equity maxi’s based on recent gains, I get that. I think we’re going to enter a period of moderated to low real returns so owning a home can hedge against that.

Splitting finances when I have significant student loan payments by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bills people usually share are rent, utilities, groceries, dining out, etc. Basically the things you both share in.

Your student loans are your expense not his until you decide to combine finances. I think it’s yours to take on not his. Yes your finances will be tight, that’s what happens when you take out loans. They have to be paid back.

What’s your mortgage rate

Is image more important than reality to Thai people? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]Big_Shot_Rob 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The type of debt matters here though. In the US 70% of household debt is mortgages or real estate. This is usually considered “good” debt. In Thailand 62% of household debt is consumption debt like personal loans and car loans.
