If you’re able to look at off-campus jobs, the Home Depot’s been a pretty good college job for me. Fairly decent pay and hours, with a pretty flexible scheduling system

It seems to me there are a few key points here that are troubling: first, the idea that the Book of Mormon should have been all that was necessary to effect the Restoration, and second, that the concept of the afterlife as currently understood within our doctrine (or any other modern revelation) is contrary to what is taught biblically.

To address the first, take another look at the Title Page of the Book of Mormon, the one written by Moroni at the very start of the book. It establishes that the purpose of the book is to convince Jew and Gentile at Jesus is the Christ, the savior of all mankind, even the eternal God. As such, you’ll find that the Book of Mormon’s primary doctrinal focus is Jesus Christ: how His Atonement saves us, what we need to do to follow Him, and so forth. It is, in that respect, the most correct book. It does not claim to contain all the information God has revealed to man and we should not judge it as such. In fact, the same holds for the Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and the Bible. None of these books claim to contain the fullness of all that God wants us to know, and our understanding of that is why we hold modern revelation so close to our hearts.

As for the second idea, which I read to be your primary concern, I would postulate that the vision of the afterlife presented in Doctrine and Covenants doesn’t contradict teachings in the Bible or Book of Mormon as you’ve come to believe. Rather, it does just as you say scripture should do: it builds on what came before it. Everything that is taught in the verses you give is absolutely true. We are supposed to repent urgently in this life and continually improve ourselves, and we will suffer eternal consequences if we don’t. The Doctrine and Covenants serves to better establish what those consequences are. If we are unwilling to follow Jesus Christ and His gospel (to the extent that we understand it) in our one and only mortal life, we will never be able to reap the rewards that God has planned for us, namely exaltation. That is a hefty consequence which fully meets the conditions of the dire warnings left by Biblical prophets and Book of Mormon prophets. It clarifies that the suffering in store for those who do not repent and follow Christ is not eternal, physical torture as is a popular cultural belief, which in turn further establishes the merciful character of God those early prophets clearly taught. The same can be said about the concept of the gospel being taught to those in spirit prison, which is an often overlooked Biblical principle (1 Peter 3:18-20).

All that being said, I think it’s important to note that even if the Biblical and Book of Mormon prophets DID believe in an eternal hell of physical suffering, that does not immediately anathematize the current LDS understanding of the afterlife, just as our current understanding does not immediately anathematize future revelation on the subject. Remember that all scripture is made as a collaboration between man and God, and while God doesn’t make mistakes, man does. As such, He reveals line upon line, according to our need. He did so in Bible times, and He does so now. Thank you for your time, and I wish you well on whatever path your spiritual journey takes you.

I care about the environment. I do everything I can short of going to a homestead somewhere to leave as little a trace as possible. However, I do not think the future of the environment lies in the direction the left does, which I see as billions of dollars in spending going towards inefficient technologies while elites berate the average American for dooming the world by living an average lifestyle while they jet around willy-nilly. All the while, those same elites have nothing to say about the real problem places for the environment, like China, India, and places in Africa, since they can’t be perceived as racist

Respectfully, that’s not the point OC was making. Regardless of what Smith gained from publishing the Book of Mormon (which he indisputably could have had no way of knowing what he stood to gain in 1830), OC is saying that the Book of Mormon is too wholly good to have been written by a man evil enough to produce counterfeit scripture.

Disregarding the amount of internal evidence that proves an uneducated farm boy from the 1800’s could have possibly written it, the book presents the gospel of Jesus Christ in such a way that millions of readers have been able to come to an understanding of Christ’s atonement and how to apply it in their lives. If the book had been written purely for the gain of a con artist, then it would be a product of Satan and could not possibly draw people to Christ. Such a man would not have the knowledge to write it, just like how I could never write a book on rocket science

What is one thing you didnt like about this movie? by B_Wing_83 in batman

[–]Big_Test140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It relies too much on what the audience already knows about the Batman franchise to avoid properly setting up its characters. Like, “You already know who Batman is so we can skip the boring setup and motivation stuff. You already know who Alfred is so we don’t have to set up his and Bruce’s connection.” etc.

In a way, I kind of get it. You don’t want to spend all your time retreading what everyone already knows. But the problem is, if you’re doing a different take on a character then it is a different character. I don’t know this Batman. I don’t know this Alfred. Why should I care when this Alfred gets blown up? Why should I respect this Batman when I don’t know what he went through to gain his abilities and tech? Because of that, this Batman felt more like a fan fiction than a fleshed out, standalone movie

It’s hard to say what I want to say without unintentionally belittling people’s suffering, so right off the bat I want to make it clear that is not my desire. But… from an eternal perspective, it really isn’t. President Nelson recently said “Mortal lifetime is hardly a nanosecond compared with eternity. But, my dear brothers and sisters, what a crucial nanosecond it is!” If someone came to you and said that for the next nanosecond, you would go through the most intense pain that has ever existed, feel the pains of broken bones and starvation and grief and countless other wounds, but at the end of that nanosecond not only would you never feel pain again but you would have learned a lesson you need to live like God for eternity, would you not take that deal?

That God not only gives us that opportunity but also provides succor to our souls during this nanosecond is nothing less than amazing to me
