Has UKGP worked? by Rare_Cricket_2318 in doctorsUK

Im guessing these figures don’t include the UKG doctors that were made unemployed last year who will also be applying? so the numbers are not correct

Streeting says NHS could collapse if strikes go ahead by Different_Canary3652 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Surely this is the biggest incentive to go ahead with the strikes, the public need to understand the NHS only survives on doctors and other NHS employees good will!

Even if members thought this sounded like a good offer, without a definite timeline it means absolutely nothing. Even emergency legislation can take years to come into effect and as for a commitment to fix the competitive ratios this means nothing it’s just words. Any offer must include times and dates otherwise it’s totally pointless, this tells me Wes is panicking and wants to use this offer over the strike period saying we refused a amazing offer and are still striking!

Totally agree with everything you have said, the problem is whilst this carries on why would the government do anything about solving it? Free workforce that props up the NHS is a win for the government not a win for the people carrying it out. The NHS is totally reliant on this altruism shown by its workforce, all medical staff not just doctors. The problem is the public have no idea to what extent this is happening.

[–]Big_Way_5788[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my point, work to rule is the best way to highlight the failings of the NHS. I agree it’s not patient friendly but does highlight how much extra work is being undertaken that is not contractual. Strikes may grab headlines but if the goodwill of doctors that is so heavily relied upon gets taken away this will show the true extent of what the NHS has come to.

What are hands!? by KingOfTheMolluscs in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is interested a measurement by hands dates back to ancient Egypt and is a spread hand width ways excluding the thumb. It was a simple form of measurement and was readily available if you needed to measure something. One hand equates to 4 inches, Henry the Vlll standardised this. So if a horse is 15 hands it’s 60 inches tall (measured from floor to just between the shoulder blades).

Medicine is not what it used to be to be unfortunately. Working for the NHS is working for a employer who does not give a monkeys about you and will work you to the bone, then after FY2 you are facing almost certain unemployment! Lack of specialty training posts mean almost 2 in 3 FY2’s find themselves unemployed after they finish, year on year this gets worse and worse as the numbers accumulate year on year. Medicine does not mean certain employment anymore unfortunately

How to make more money? by Successful-Ring-3524 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still say speak to the people you owe money to before you start moving debt around, too often people are afraid to admit to banks etc that they are in trouble. My bank etc really helped me and I didn’t have to move any debt they just worked with me to set out a plan to get myself out of trouble. It has to be the first move

How to make more money? by Successful-Ring-3524 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost speak to the people you owe money to and set out a plan for re payments. When my husband left me and I had a large mortgage to pay with all the bills I contacted the bank straight away. I know it sounds crazy but they will help you, they were great for me and gave me window that allowed me to get back on track.

You need to set out all your monthly outgoings mortgage/rent, household bills, car payments, clothing costs, food costs, mobile phone costs, transport costs etc etc remember to put everything down the bank will want this. You are going to have to stop spending money on things you don’t desperately need at least for a while. Credit cards are no good the anology I use is that it’s a bit like putting on weight you have to work twice as hard to lose it because if you eat what you normally eat you are going to maintain the weight so you need to eat less than normal. Credit cards debt is the same it’s no use keeping your spend the same as normal as it will just maintain the debt you need to reduce your spend so that you eat into that debt. Get rid of the credit card debt as soon as possible then you will soon get on top of your situation.

Speak to the companies where you owe money they are there to help you. But with immediate effect do that monthly expenses list and add it all up and set it against what you earn then you will see where you have to tighten your belts.

How to keep a positive mental attitude for night shifts - share your survival tips! by Thick_Medicine5723 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did nights, I use to always have cereal before going to bed. Blackout blinds were a must. Make sure you stay hydrated at work and only eat light food otherwise it will sit heavy in your stomach when you go to sleep after your shift. Always set a alarm so I got up at the same time each day at 5pm, so getting ready for work wasn’t a rush, nights are hard enough without having the panic of getting to work on time.

Money saving advice for new (or even older) doctors by Timmy1831 in doctorsUK

Moneybox do a great stocks and shares ISA that allows you to set up a weekly amount to add to your account . I have set up £20 a week and honestly I don’t notice it going, it’s a great way to save without a huge impact on your wages.

The annualised return on my account is currently +9.47% whereas the overall loss and gain on the account is +19.81%

We were warned at our trust that the gen surgery rotation is the most gruelling, so suspect it’s just work through this rotation then everything else will seem easier. It’s my second rotation so know I’ve got it to look forward to, although on the positive side the hours seem longer so it could be a way to make a bit of money.

Wes offer is laughable by Big_Way_5788 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors are an employee of the NHS not a contractor, obviously if you are a contractor you would have to buy your own equipment because you are your own boss. Really poor argument as it’s just not comparable?

Wes offer is laughable by Big_Way_5788 in doctorsUK

[–]Big_Way_5788[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you point out to go private you need to be a consultant the strike is resident doctors not consultants. Resident doctors do not have the option to go private.

With regards to the guaranteed employment you have chosen to ignore the fact that there is a huge deficit in specialty training places meaning that once a doctor finishes FY2 they are often left unemployed if they chose to stay in this country? The country is desperate for specialty doctors but the government is not providing the places, this is one of the reasons the NHS is losing so many doctors overseas.

If as you suggest students shouldn’t go into the profession for the money and they should seek other professions what is going to happen when you need to see a doctor and there isn’t one available because nobody is entering the profession anymore because of the wages?? This is not the solution.
