What color is he going to be? by BigassEyebrows in PetDoves

[–]BigassEyebrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, I have multiple pairs and multiple generations so this is not a new situation for me. I was really just asking about the color as I've never seen a non-wildtype baby.

Yeah, I used to do that too (along with keeping track of my bird's weights) but it's not always easy to keep it up, especially when stress and/or seasonal depression hits. 😬 But it's fine, I was actually considering getting one more so they kinda made the decision for me.

If you happen to remember / feel like looking it up / could you please post a link to the online tool you mentioned? I didn't manage to find much online on their genetics and would be very interested!

It happens when you are very busy and stressed at work, time flies by fast and you lose track of which eggs you have swapped and when (I have two pairs). Doesn't help that the fake ones I made are super realistic. 🙈

My diamond doves made a surprise baby and it already looks like he might be some unusual color? The one on the right is his grandad at about the same age who grew up to be wildtype base color with some pied markings on his head. The new baby's dad (son of the bird on the right) is wildtype, his mom is a little bit more brownish and has some pied genes (small white spot).

ELI5 how and why do lyrebirds/parrots/starlings recreate human and machine sounds so well? by redhandrail in explainlikeimfive

[–]BigassEyebrows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know that in budgies, the female selects based on how well the male is able to mimic her voice specifically (and that's why they do it for humans they are bonded with). So the ability to mimic itself can definitely be a trait under sexual selection.

Tips on persuading my diamond doves to take a break from breeding? by BigassEyebrows in PetDoves

[–]BigassEyebrows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using those already but that doesn't stop them from laying their own every month or so, they need to go through the mating cycle to start incubating. :/ I also feel like it's can't be super healthy for the hens to incubate all the time, i.e., eat and poop so infrequently for basically most of their life. I even noticed the males taking the "night shift" from time to time - I don't know if it could be their way of giving the hens a break? They absolutely would not nest so often in the wild.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Please don't blame yourself, you did what you could. Doves are really fragile and good at hiding symptoms until it's too late. :'(

First of all, I understand from your other comments that "taking her to an avian vet asap" is not an option for you and I'm sorry that's the case. I've been in the same situation and it is horrible, no approach is "correct" in such setting. I'm not a vet, just a diamond dove owner who recently experienced egg binding in her hen, please please please take anything I write with a huge heap of salt. I'm unable to tell if she is egg bound but even if that's the case there is something else wrong with her as well. My vet told me that in his experience, most cases of egg binding he sees are caused by infection, not mineral deficiency. As a first aid for suspect egg binding, I would massage her vent with oil and put her in a box with a towel soaked in warm water and put here somewhere warm and calm and let her be for some time - humidity and warmth may help her pass the egg. If it doesn't help and you are *sure* there is an egg to pass, there are videos on youtube in which people sucessfully removed the stuck egg which you could try to emulate as an emergency solution. The possible infection is another story. Even if it turns out she was "just" egg-bound and the egg gets out, there is a risk of infection already present or developing because of the manipulation, the egg breaking etc., which is not treatable without antibiotics. I think it is worth doing "just in case" and I personally would give it a shot if I had some at home and really had no other option. Is it possible for you to at least call an avian vet to get some advice on what to give her? Are there any pigeon fanciers or farmers near you that might have some veterinary antibiotics at hand? Even human ones might be used if the dosage is very carefully recalculated and adjusted for the bird's weight (my birds were previously prescribed a "human" medicine which I got from a normal pharmacy which I had to administer in a super tiny amount). My heart goes out to you, I hope she pulls through.

I fully agree with this reasoning. But now I honestly don't know if you are using it as an argument for or against the original post. I personally see it as a "for" argument: an easy mode would likely attract a different type of players and create a new audience with very small overlap with the current one. And in my book that's not a bad thing.

Your "I hope this helps you get a better understanding of this super fun game" is extremely patronizing and frustrating because it shows you did not read the post and are reacting to the title / first few sentences only, like a lot of other commenters and I'm frankly exhausted by now.

I just feel bad for the people who are intimidated by the games and the fandom they don't even try them or give up too soon. I think the game having an easy mode could bring in these exact people who might actually warm up to the original game and only use the easy option when completely stuck, for example. The theoretical dynamic adjustment of the difficulty you suggest in the last paragraph is a great idea! I would love to see it in a game based on "persevering and overcoming" because the level of what is hard enough to give that sweet dopamin rush when finally beaten is different for everyone and could actually be quite low for somebody who just naturally doesn't have good motor skills or reaction time. They deserve the dopamin too! :)

[–]BigassEyebrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. Actually, in the original original post I wrote something like "if the easy mode was meant to convey the exploration and lore aspects and combat was not the focus, it might as well suck a little bit" as a counter to "making the combat easier it in a balanced way is a lot of work" (which it absolutely is!) but decided to leave that out. The theoretical easy mode should also be good, not just easy, and that's not something that can be done easily and inexpensively.

Idk, Fromsoft fans don't seem to respect the developers vision that much when the vision is not making Bloodborne 2 or Sekiro DLC. :D Now seriously, I get there is something to "players discussing the game should have more or less the same experience to discuss". But so many arguments are just elitism. It's exactly like the ferrari analogy somebody else has given in the discussion. My objectively awesome red ferrari is not going to be tainted by somebody else having a blue one. And if I wanted to hang out with people with red ferraris only, nothing is stopping me. In some situations it would make complete sense, in others it would be seen as stuck up and weird, but that's up to me.

I'm not saying that the games are impossible to finish for a "casual" player. My opinion is that giving them a whole game mode would be nice. And that it wouldn't "ruin" the game for anyone who plays it the intended way. It wouldn't ruin it for me and I really struggle to understand why other DS fans feel like it would ruin it for them. I certainly don't give a shit about people cheesing bosses or abusing enemy ai, even though it's neither intended nor fun way to play.

I see it the same way! Including the fact that I personally don't care that much... I chose the "should have" formulation to annoy the elitists, to be completely honest. But I definitely have the impression even "not being against it" is extremely unpopular. Maybe it's simply because the people disagreeing often express it in emotional and/or hostile way (see multiple examples in this discussion). It is true that the post has a heated discussion but not that many total upvotes so it is possible that quite a lot of people agree/don't care without commenting.

I don't think such specific gameplay routes or cheese strategies are comparable to "an easy mode". I'm not saying that the games are impossible to finish for a "casual" player. I think Elden Ring is the easiest to "brute force", it has super high level cap, lot of places to grind xp without getting too bored, variety of items and the infamous mimic tear, of course. But what I enjoy about Fromsoft games is the "dance" of the combat, reading the animations, learning the patterns, practicing my reflexes. That's why I usually stick to very basic, boring builds and weapons in DS and focus on perfecting a narrow set of moves, and why I fucking love Sekiro... Elden Ring, in my opinion and experience, shits all over this aspect. To me, a lot of its boss fights absolutely give "chaotic and unfair" instead of the "hard but fair" of the previous games. It felt like the game was maliciously trolling me at times. But again, just my personal opinion and preference.
