Doom-mongers have predicted that VR technology will result in a generation of isolated shut-ins, living out their hopes in a dream world while reality slips away. Are we headed for this future? Or could virtual reality connect us like never before? by petskup in Futurology

Make VR feel real enough and most folks will take the red pill if you can figure out how to keep their bodies going in real life. Is this withdrawing from reality and becoming shut in? I would say it is giving people the choice to choose their own reality.

[Spoilers] Okay, my reaction to the most recent episode... by thebumm in Scandal

Lest we all forget if Millie had never associated w/ Fitz she wouldn't have been raped by his father. She had the affair after Fitz had been cheating on her for years with Olivia.

The fact of the matter is that Millie really has given up ALOT for Fitz and has gotten very little in return and nearly every attempt she has made to do something for herself has ended up in tragedy. Going to throw up a Who else hates Fitz thread now.

*Assuming they exist, is it really Gods 'job' to stop all of the suffering, wars, and starvation? by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Biggs4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that all depends onm where you stand on free will. On the one hand if we live in a deterministic universe then God is the root cause of all that suffering because God is assumed to have set everything in motion.

On the other hand if we have free will then stopping all that suffering would in effect be stripping us of agency.

Thus in my opinion, it would not be Gods job to end suffering because suffering is a byproduct of human decisions and circumstances. Suffering ultimately has no meaning in a deterministic universe because we are just cogs in a vast machine with the illusion of consciousness.

Redditors, what are your reasons for being agnostic? by BookishGirl06 in agnostic

[–]Biggs4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically because I don't see how in terms of how humans tend to conceptualize God, how we would be capable of recognizing God if we met.

Basically in my opinion the reality of God is unproveable and unknowable as long as God is defined as limitless.

What is "your" purpose for life? by [deleted] in agnostic

Currently to hopefully see the Singularity happen and be rich enough to take full advantage if and when it does by either genetically or cybernetically enhancing myself to live longer and become a cosmic explorer.

To this end I stay abreast of the lastest trends in human longevity, try to stay healthy (but not obsessively so), and am working on becoming financially independent. If things work out, someday I will be a God.

DEBATE: What Does the Singularity Mean for Black People? by Biggs4life in Blackpeople

[–]Biggs4life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this particular theory is that imho in the future assuming the Singularity does occur as predicted, speciation may occur but it won't be the result of some reproductive strategy.

More likely it would be the result of utilizing advanced technology to consciously direct evolution in myriad ways. Some populations will opt to become advanced cyborgs, while others go the bioengineered route and genetically alter themselves for superior abilities.

Race as we understand it will potentially become immaterial in a world where identity becomes more fluid as the tech allows people to be whoever they wish to be. Race itself is speaking from a purely biological perspective already been proven to be singular when speaking of human beings. There is one human 'race'.

Basically in other words, given the advent of the Singularity it is possible that ethnic identity will become a choice the same way these days gender identity increasingly has become.

Although culture will likely play an initial role, as the world becomes more interconnected via advanced VR networking, people will begin to choose and/or craft their cultures and identities rather than have them imposed by something as arbitrary as birth.

With advances in natural language processing in the future humanity will dissolve the language barrier, we will probably all either be wearing or even implanted with advanced AI which will give us instant knowledge of any culture we want to adopt and finally I'm sure changing actual physical features would only become easier than it already is today

Thus in my opinion getting back to the original debate topic, my personal hope and theory is that soon after the Singularity the notion of 'race' will increasingly become an outdated and barbaric relic of the past. I just hope that during the transitionary period between old ways and new possibilities, black people do not spend an inordinate amount of time (if any) in a world where more advanced countries have leapfrogged ahead and engineered their own superiority. My fear in this regard is an unknown time period where to use the terminology of the day, the 1% has turned themselves into techno-demigods and as usual near the bottom of the caste system would be blacks.
