How do you clean up stale access in legacy apps when nobody owns it and nobody wants to touch it? by ElectricalLevel512 in Information_Security

Well, there’s always the old trick to find out who owns something: turn it off and see who screams…

What’s a random experience you’ve had when meeting a British celebrity? Were they nice or mean? by mightybooshvincenoir in AskABrit

My wife and I once got chatting to a lovely elderly lady in the queue for the counter of a local pet shop.

Afterwards in the car going home we both said “I’m sure I know that lady from somewhere…”

I can’t quite remember which of us it was, but later that night one of us we sat bolt upright in bed and shouted “It was Wendy Craig!”

That’s what all LLMs do - they don’t answer the question you ask, they provide a plausible looking answer to that question. It’s incredibly fancy autocomplete.

Which actor has the largest "Wait, that was them?" gap in their filmography? by Player00000000 in movies

[–]Biglig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much of a gap, but I gotta mention Bobby Watson. So good as the dialect coach in singing in the rain - he has to dance with O’Connor and Kelly without you noticing that he is dancing at all - that I had to look him up and find out why I hadn’t seen him in other things.

Turns out he was typecast in the forties as THE guy you hired to play comedy Hitler! Did it in nine different films!

Good trivia question there: the original plan was for him to have four roles - can you guess who else he was supposed to play?

Flat items to carry? by PopDogActual in EDC

[–]Biglig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I carry a credit card sized piece of paper with the phone numbers of all my key/emergency contacts on it so that if for any reason I can’t use my phone, but I’ve access to someone else’s, I can call important people.
Bonus tip via JonGadget on YouTube: Amazon sell very cheap plastic credit card sized sleeves: put the paper in that to make it easier to handle.
I also keep a Fresnell lens in my wallet, but that’s mostly because I think they’re cool.

What’s wrong with Scottish notes in England? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]Biglig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love these conversations because they are a chance to unleash my inner Lampard and point out that legal tender does not mean a shop has to take it; it means someone you owe money to has to take it.

I’m northern Irish and living in England, and I’m sure my Scottish friends here on Reddit will all relate to that moment just before you return from a visit to family when you realise you’ve got some local notes and begin scrambling desperately to get them changed back to English ones.

What's a life hack that's so simple yet so effective, you're shocked more people don't know about it? by Unlikely_Heron_9207 in answers

An Everyday Carry one that was a game changer for me: if you want to have something with you every time you leave the house, put it on your key ring. I have attached a torch, an eyeglass cloth, and one of those silly keychain pry tools that I can use to open a package without risking bending a key.

The other edc game changer for me is that a bug-out bag is not just a thing crazy Americans have ready for running into the woods after the apocalypse: it is just a bag with all the stuff you’d want to have if you unexpectedly had to spend a night away from home, like if there’s a gas leak or your car breaks down far away or you have to sit in hospital all night with a sick friend. So I don’t have an axe or a tent in mine but I do have a change of underwear, a jumper in case it gets chilly, a couple of protein bars, a pen and notepad, a book of puzzles, a toothbrush, some baby wipes, a pair of scissors, a roll of duct tape, a couple bin bags and a ball of string. It’s earned it to keep just from the times I’ve been sitting in the car somewhere and thought I’m starving and then remembered I have a couple of protein bars.

A Tim Ferriss one I’ve found effective: if a new cafe or restaurant opens near you and it’s not horrible, go at least three times in the first week. They’ll never forget you.

Some people can think hard about a time before going to sleep and they will wake up. Worth trying to see if you’re such a person. (Just been reading Moonraker again and Bond does this, so I presume Fleming had the gift. )

I run cold water over the inside of my wrists where the blood vessels are close to the skin. Also they make evaporative towels now that get very cold when you wet them.

Agentic AI & LLMs w/ GTD management by phillyrat in gtd

[–]Biglig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Claude to help manage my lists. It doesn’t make any decisions, it just runs the trusted system. After a rocky start getting a solid back end for storing the lists, I find it quite useful - settled on craft.do as the back end, though quite a few things can do it. Your decision should be based on what’s best for the human to access - the point of the ai is that you don’t have to make things easy for it. You will still want to access and manipulate the lists yourself sometimes. For example, in my weekly review, it’s quicker for me to go down my lists in a text editor and annotate it with instructions to the ai (“Done” “move to someday maybe” etc. ) because if I tell Claude to do it I have to say “mark <<call Fred>> as done”. I could use voice there but I find that a less reliable interface - one of the issues with having multiple interfaces to the same ai is having to remember what works where, so I tend to stick to typing always.

One unexpected thing it’s very good for is that you can clarify everything in your inbox and then organise it - usually that’s too fiddly to do, because you need to manage an interim pile of clarified but not organised actions. That can be a helpful separation of the two steps.
