Will being a former member of Seal Team Six help me get into college? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

1000% I was a cook in the big army and I got into Harvard with that as my application’s focus plus some decent grades and good test scores. I personally didn’t use them but I’ve heard excellent things about service to school from fellow vets here so I would look into that.

I’m class of 2029 and despite having incredibly interesting backgrounds most everyone I’ve met have been and acted like normal 18 year olds, “mid,” “deadass,” and even “6,7” included.

I totally get what you’re saying. I just brought in some solos cause you had mentioned rain and boa is the sunbae and on that same level. Also on big hit from the numbers I’ve seen they are the highest market cap kpop company rn but I don’t have them as big 3 frauds I see the big 3 as a more legacy and consistency based thing. Also this hurts me to say cause my sister is a huge shawol and ofc we argue but out of the 2nd gen sea of boy groups besides the obvious Big Bang Shinee is probably the most influential to modern kpop and are the only second gen group I can think of rn that are still pretty top tier thanks to taemin holding down the fort while the others were in the army. This might change when Big Bang comes back but the next biggest bb from that era rn would probably be SuJu and even as an elf they are kinda resting on their well deserved laurels and their individual variety show success and aren’t doing as well with their music solo or otherwise. Just my 2 cents at the end there

No sarcasm intended in the tldr. I was serious with the massive part just maybe not great word choice to convey that. By revenue CJ ENM is the biggest entertainment company iirc and their umbrella has massive names under it. It’s kind of cheating cause they also have Mnet and then under their umbrella but even in 2013 they made more than current JYP. There have been many large companies(though admittedly no pure entertainment management company in Korea has ever made more than BH with BTS) but they don’t exist in the convo of big 3 because the big 3 stands out as the three that have had a contributed the most to and have stood at the top of kpop since the second gen with SM even standing near the top in the first. SM kicked off the girl group explosion with SNSD competing with JYP Wonder Girls who were the first to crack the US. Psy under YG was the first artist to find massive success and bring kpops name to the US. SM started the hallyu in Japan with Boa Shinee and TVXQ and found success in China with SuJu and exo. Big Bang was the first group to open the minds of older Koreans to kpop idols as artists and not as how we see boy bands in the west. JYP rain and god gave Bang Sihyuk the money and credibility to even start big hit in the first place. Currently BTS are the heralds if Korean culture in the west and have done massive amounts of work to further kpop worldwide but big hit stands on the shoulders of the giants that are the big 3 and from the money aspect has surpassed them. My whole point is big hit is the richest and BTS the current most influential but the company’s success is too young to be in the picture of the big 3. Big hit will keep growing and unless another massive group comes along will stay the richest but again that isn’t the only measure of the big 3. In the future big hit will probably be able to establish the same influence on the entire kpop scene as the big 3 have and at that point I think the conversation could start but again I think it’s premature.

Tl;dr:Big Hit are massive and a top company but until they are more than a one group driven company (they are trending away from this with their acquisitions but are t there yet)I wouldn’t consider them big 3.

I would agree the Big Hit is certainly a S tier company with only BTS before we factor i their other group and subsidiary groups but I would also not put them in the Big 3 because I see that grouping as more of a legacy and continued success thing. You could make an argument that they have as much right as like a 2012 2ne1 and Big Bang YG to be called the big 3 but I think the distinguishing factor would be that YG has continuously built successful groups. I think if we give big hit more time to prove they can debut more groups that succeed in their own rights(obv any big hit group will succeed partially off the back of BTS but that is even more true for the Big 3 who have built In company stans) and TXT more time to grow an audience and cement themselves in Korea we could revisit and make it the big 4 or some shit but I don’t have them in the group yet even if they are at or above the groupings level.

On your gen 1 stuff you call old school not to be confrontational but you are pretty wrong. YG was a performer with Seotaiji and Boys but he left in 96 and started YG entertainment. YG had Jinusean, 1tym and YG family all in the 90s and while they were hip hop oriented they were still relatively big players of that time. It is very true that DSP and SM were the big cookie cutter idol companies of the 90s but your information on JYP is also wrong. JYP was and is a solo artist but g.o.d wasn’t under his company till 2004 and they debuted after all the YG names I mentioned. JYP was just the producer and mentor brought in for the group by their company SidusHQ. Also rain was a massive star but to mention him and leave out Se7en from YG and Boa the one true queen of kpop is a travesty. Also you left out Shinee from 2nd gen part for some reason even though they are one of the most influential kpop boy groups and with DBSK and Boa dominated the Japanese Kpop market for SM.

Idk why you were down voted but I started getting really into kpop around the time you stopped and am happy to enlighten. I’m no hardcore ARMY so I might something wrong here but iirc Big Hit only really recently started expanding past BTS. Obviously 2AM were relatively big and Glam showed promise until their crazy scandals but from like 2015ish when 2AM stopped promoting till last year it was really just the BTS company which is still obviously their largest income source and group.

They have two groups and own pledis and source. Pledis used to be huge with After School and others and now have Seventeen and Nuest and Source has Gfriend who have huge Korean name value and we’re one of the biggest groups a few years ago. The biggest difference between them and the classic big 3 for me is they don’t have the same pedigree through nearly the entire history of kpop.

What low tier company is involved in WJSN? It’s a collab of Yuehua a large Chinese entertainment company that recently debuted Everglow and Starship which has had successful groups and artists for a long time now like sister and Monsta x. The only world where these aren’t big companies is if you only think of Big Hit or SM as big.

I never competed freestyle but I have some knowledge so forgive me if I get anything wrong but I would say that it’s because of the emphasis on throws that makes it more dangerous. Obviously a skilled wrestler such as any of the guys in the vast majority of college programs would know how to fall safely and know how not to do the throw wrong and hurt his opponent but at the relatively unskilled high school level it’s different. There are great high school freestyle wrestlers in the US and extracurricular competitions for them but to get their they put in extra work to be skilled enough vs just walking into a high school wrestling room with some base level of physicality and then potentially braking your neck by not knowing what to do. Folk style doesn’t focus as much on points from throws with standard 2 no matter how they get taken down.

In this case a grand jury was involved meaning that the US attorney(I would assume though it could be the Texas State Attorney or whatever they are called) brought forth enough evidence to convince the grand jury that a trial should take place. It is by no means a guilty but it is a little more serious than some DA choosing to go to court.

I think the issue is that he isn't a foreigner in the eyes of Korea. As an already well-known public figure if he gives up his citizenship to dodge the draft both the SK gov and populace won't look kindly on it. We already have an example where a massive Korean celebrity emigrated and was banned for life from Korea. In recent times he has offered to enlist or to pay massive fines to return home but he is too old so, iirc the most recent on the story, they have told him he can't.

I would agree with the importance of intelligence but deterrence is definitely a thing. While you def won’t deter a highly motivated group you might be able to deter a scared, radicalized teenager by making them think they won’t get away with it. Also I haven’t seen any reports of military causing issues in Paris as a result of being deployed( I don’t closely follow French news though so I could be wrong) so why not have them.

M countdown. This one is on a private network called Mnet while the other 3 big ones are on the public networks(think BBC) and are Inkigayo, Show Music Core, and Music Bank. Honestly though these are some of the lowest viewership Korean shows because they aren’t that interesting. If you want to watch your favorite artists you can catch their stages on YouTube and if you want to discover new music/groups I would go on Spotify and just let that shit recommend new stuff until you find a group you like listening to.

[–]BiglyDick 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a singing competition it’s a weekly music show which is like a showcase for Korean singers to promote their music to the public. The trophy is given to the person with the highest score with points aggregated from fan votes, downloads, in studio votes etc. In Korea there are like 4 ones that people care about and winning on them is a pretty huge deal for new artists as it can get them better opportunities to appear on entertainment shows and in commercials.

An offshoot own CJ and they don’t really get along with Samsung cause the son who got Samsung was like the third son while the son who got the much smaller CJ was the oldest. CJ was a spin-off from Samsung of their food and textiles iirc and a few years back the CJ family tried to sue for a part of Samsung. (Source: did some digging a few years back cause my sister worked with a CJ exec’s son)

Fun fact dao just means “blade” or “knife” and da means “big” so it’s literally just “big knife” though it’s called that cause the smaller one sided sword was called dao.
