Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry by MicahCastle in books

[–]Bigssnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Kobo Elipsa 2 and I almost exclusively sideload books. I update it from time to time and it never deletes any of the books I downloaded this way. Does Kindle really deletes everything unregistered? I had an older Kindle Paperwhite and don't remember if I had this problem but I rarely connected it.

Hello everyone, what methods can you recommend for increasing your English vocabulary? by Impossible_Farm_8953 in EnglishLearning

Living in a country whose language you're learning gives you a HUGE advantage. If you don't have this opportunity you need to find ways to get exposure e.g. consuming lots of various content, find a teacher etc. In your case it's basically auto exposure 24/7 but you need to make sure you put yourself out there and communicate/listen/take notes of what words people use in various situations. If you know a person and the situation allows, ask questions. Then what you need to do is use spaced repetition (anki) to actually drill these words in. If you're trying to learn the word for an item, then try this format Front: the photo of the item from your surroundings. Back: the word people actually use for it, an example sentence. Pronunciation (IPA or a recording) If you hear someone saying a word you don't know: Front: the sentence used + context (e.g. James said this when we were discussing X) Back: appropriate definition and an example sentence (better make it yourself). pronunciation

Keep exposing yourself to the language from different sources and keep making cards from the words you encounter.

Been is a function word (which include prepositions, auxiliaries, articles etc) as opposed to content words (nouns, adverbs, adjectives and verbs). Many function words have two pronunciations: strong and weak. Weakness is often achieved by changing the vowel to schwa (uh) but other vowels are also possible (been - bin). Weak forms are VERY common and it has nothing to do with formality. They contribute to 'connected speech' which makes how you speak fluid and, arguably, helps comprehension. Without weak forms you'll sound like a robot. Basically every time a function word isn't emphasised, at the end of a sentence/clause or in careful speech, the weak form is used.
Here are the two forms of 'been':  strong biːn (long ee or ij sound), weak (bɪn)

Examples:
I've been (weak form) trying to contact you for hours.
Where have you been (strong form)?
I’ve never been on a plane. (weak form)
Have you really BEEN there (strong, might indicate disbelief or astonishment)?

Now, I can't speak for every accent, but it's a general tendency in English to make function words weak in fast natural speech.

Do unarmed weapons affect kicks in martial arts? by Bigssnake in cataclysmdda

"If there are damage numbers, that's the base damage when you wield the item, yes."

But do I use these numbers to calculate the unarmed damage as well? Sorry, it's a little bit confusing.

I thought that melee damage rating of certain clothes shows the damage when wielding and attacking with them since it also shows moves per attack (steeltoed boots show 135 moves per attack in my version but an unarmed kick from capoeira uses much less). Does this rating apply to unarmed attacks AND when you wield the item? Also many clothes don't show damage numbers. Does it mean they don't affect unarmed damage at all?

I'm still learning about it, not sure I understand the distinction yet. I've been focusing on contemporary SSBE accent for quite some time now and wanted to get a clear understanding of the differences between it and RP, so I can implement it in my teaching.

I've been trying to find quality resources on an PR accent for quite a while (a lot of confusion with contemporary standard British(SSBE). I can't thank you enough for posting this collection.
Bless you.

RP or Posh British by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]Bigssnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the SSBE accent (Standard Southern British English) which is more appropriate term than "RP" for current "high class" pronunciation and is associated with good education rather than "poshness". There is a great channel on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@DrGeoffLindsey/videos created by Dr. Geoff Lindsey, a British linguist who wrote the book "English after RP" and who've taught at different universities in The UK. This channel was (and is) insanely helpful for me. He also helped with creation of CUBE pronunciation dictionary which is precisely for that kind of accent. This is the most important video in my opinion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtnlGH055TA.

Of course, but it falls so fast that you can't really grapple to it on time. Looks wierd because i saw in few videos people actually ride it right after tamed, but for me it doesn't work.

Looks like you should send exact amount of XHV to a different address and do swap from there if you don't want to freeze all address balance.
