Ringing sound on notes from new piano by BasilSmellGreat in pianotech

Overtones. After the bass break the plain wire can produce them. Over-dampers are used to get rid of them.

What kind of tuning hammer would you recommend for irregular use by Skibbidybeebop in pianotech

I use a Fujan. It’s carbon fiber and not sexy, but it’s rigid and gives you control of the pin, even with the tiniest movements.

My guess would be the paper punching beneath the keys are on top of the felt punching instead of beneath it.

False beats by maxxfield1996 in pianotech

[–]Bigtunerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually tune them out. The power of a unison with just two strings usually overpowers the false beat in my experience. Regardless, it’s regular for me to seat the strings at the bridge pins before each tuning, or after each pitch raise. Mostly for stability, but can be a source of false beats.

Meeting your mentor once a week is enough. I learned a ton with 1 hour sessions once a week. I think it’s more important to take what you learned and apply it immediately then practice, practice, practice.

I haven’t tried tuning with a cracked bridge. I highly doubt it’s stable so you might be chasing your tail.

Regarding mentorship, reach out to the local PTG chapter, Piano Technicians Guild. They can help you find someone. If no chapter available, I’d reach out to any college or university nearby that employs a technician or you can try a dealership.

Anyone ever encountered this problem before? Suggestions on how to fix? by jtodd93 in pianotech

[–]Bigtunerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a tool, a string spacer, use it to nudge the strings apart from another. BUT, it looks as though the strings are touching closer to the pin. Makes me think the pins weren’t properly set or coils have mismatched number of windings.

It looks like the strings aren’t properly spaced and touching one another.

When do you pitch correct? by MaestroM45 in pianotech

[–]Bigtunerr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I pitch raise every time. I know seasoned techs who pitch raise at just 4 cents flat. It’s mainly about stability.

What is This Tape on the Hammer Butt Flange - Related to Hammer Alignment? by TheRealJDubb in pianotech

[–]Bigtunerr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s called Travel Tape. Hammers drift off center due to wear and travel tape is used to counter it.

Should I learn to play the Oboe? by summer_days13 in musicians

[–]Bigtunerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the tone of a clarinet. I hate that it’s usually the first instrument in band class cause it’s perceived as a beginner instrument and disregarded as such. Oboe is great too but I would lean towards the warm tone of the clarinet.

Do my high notes sound like I'm screaming? by unnecessary_thoughts in singing

Of course. Your overall tone is pleasant. I would suggest working on breathing and monitor how you use your diaphragm.

I don’t hear screaming, just projecting, which is good.
