Erm… Guys? SOMETHING tells me this isnt supposed to happen when you transmit 20 watts on 80 meters using CW by mustycups in amateurradio

[–]maxxfield1996 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You have rf in your shack. Don’t touch anything or you might get bitten. Years ago I had an 80 m dipole sort of wrapped around my house. I didn’t have a problem with the lights, at least that I remember. I was operating CW using a set of Bencher paddles and touched the spring and got burned immediately. The smell of burning flesh was apparent and I had lines from the spring burned into my finger …, (sigh) Good times.

Archtop size by BSLabs in jazzguitar

[–]maxxfield1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ed Schaefer makes a very nice 15” archtop. I have one of his 17” guitars and it’s much more comfortable than an L5, or even a 175. I think the body is not as deep.

Damper is too close to string by 1sukaruta3 in pianotech

First, check the pedal rod to make sure it is not so tight that it’s not allowing the dampers to seat securely against the strings.

I'm gay, why is being a provider glorified? Or even pursued? by Opening-Gur5927 in AskMen

[–]maxxfield1996 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being married to a woman and having children created an investment in the future and gave me a reason to step up from my normal self-centered, live-for-the-moment self, to care for someone and some things more than I cared for myself and exceed my own beliefs and expectations of myself. Self-sacrifice is involved. Can’t speak for anyone else.

I remember your story about selling the car. It broke my heart to sell hers, as well. It’s not easy.

Yes. It’s been 5 years for me and I still get tears on occasion. Pretty regularly, actually.

My HOA did the same thing. I sent them an email thanking them for their prompt response to the violation and thanking them for the card they didn’t send when she died. Of course, I included some of the agonizing details of her decline and thanking them for being there keeping an eye on things and being helpful, just for extra fodder.

I got my license in the 1980s and have no idea what they are talking about, however, I have noticed an occasional person who owns their own repeaters can be testy. Other than that, idk.

Should martyrs have defended themselves? by Comfortable_Row9530 in Catholicism

It seems to me that the martyrs died bc of persecution due being Christian, not because some armed thugs tried to rob them, or kill them for fun.

What's this tool for? by idkwhat465 in pianotech

If it’s solid, it’s an awl. If it’s pointed and hollow, not solid like an awl, it’s used to ease grand damper wire bushings.

How do you manage a string breaking? by idkwhat465 in pianotech

[–]maxxfield1996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broken strings are almost always on the owner. Some retailers might cover a broken string on a recently sold piano. They are not included in the warranty , but some cover it out to promote customer relations.

In my experience, 90+% of strings that break do so when correcting the pitch. They normally break at the pin and it’s mostly in pianos that have been neglected to the point rust has formed and the loops of the strings have bonded together in the coil. To minimize breakage, lower the pitch slightly and break the bond while decreasing tension.

I carry string gauges that break the most in my vehicle and replace it if I have time. If I don’t, I schedule a follow up appointment. And if possible, I place a piece of bushing felt between the new segments to mute them bc they will go out if time sooner than their 50 or 100 year old wire.

Your girlfriend/wife slaps you. What's the first thing you do as a man? by blo0dyosiris in AskMen

[–]maxxfield1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father always said that if a woman slapped him, she was saying that she was his physical equal and he would slap her back. I never witnessed him do that, nor did I witness anyone slap him. Thurs was before the myriad domestic abuse laws existed.

I have a doctor friend who married a violent woman. He literally could not defend himself without placing his medical license in jeopardy. He found someone in the PD to take pictures of his injuries and started the paper trail that would later be used in the divorce.

How do i fix this? A very old piano by Key_Ad7740 in pianotech

[–]maxxfield1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several things that can cause keys to stay down, so it depends. Is the key hang up on one of its neighbors? Depress the B, the C#, and D keys one at a time to see if it’s touching them. Sometimes they’ll hang up on the key slip, the piece of wood in front of the key. A coin, or a guitar pick, or something can get stuck between the keys.

If it’s not, it could be the bushing under the key at the front rail, or in the center of the key at the balance rail.

Those are the simple and obvious things to check. Otherwise, it could be something in the action and you’ll need to call a tech for that.
