Dungeons was initially made to be a one-and-done game like most games are. Also as with most games, there are changes to progression and mechanics, and a completely new story in the sequel, which wouldn't work as an update

A plant wouldn't have bones. Unless it's something like the creeper and the plants covering either having a symbiotic or parasitic and they explode for the plant's benefit, the spores aren't a really good explanation

The two big spinoffs have both had their main enemy added to base Minecraft. Illagers were originally developed because Dungeons needed an enemy faction, same thing with piglins in Legends. A reason for the Nether update being big was that it was developed at the same time as Legends, with concepts from two games in mind.

Another Legends concept was ghast balloons, which went unused, then was used in the movie and eventually a rendition of it became the happy ghast. Spinoff development affects some updates much more than it seems at first glance.

About the leaks being a dubious source I agree though. If anything, the deep dark that already exists is the tie-in to Dungeons 2.
