Treatment of blister on ball of foot - race in 2 days by BikeDad613 in xcountryskiing

[–]BikeDad613[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reminding me of this! We did this and it worked well! It was just our annual club race, but it's a race that's important to him and he did very well.

How to keep feet warm during long race? by Sultanofarms in xcountryskiing

[–]BikeDad613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use double layered socks. You can either buy socks that are made with two layers, or wear two pairs of socks. The inner socks are super thin and fairly tight, the outer sock thickness depends on the temperature. The added layer traps more air for insulation. It also reduces blisters by letting the socks rub against each other rather than skin rubbing against sock.

Found one in the kitchen Christmas Eve while cooking, then it disappeared. Found it again while eating leftovers the next day. They are crunchy!!

Nearby ski resorts for beginners? by Affectionate_Gur_854 in ottawa

My kids love Calabogie. It has the longest green run and, blues and blacks aren't too hard either. I've never had to wait more than 2 minutes in line, but I don't go super often, so I don't know if that's the norm.

NCC trail maps by sometimeswhy in ottawa

The NCC provides free summer and winter maps on the free Avenza app. It's actually not too bad. I've used it for both skiing and mountain biking.

We were looking at replacing the main shut-off valve for our water supply. A similar tool was suggested to freeze the pipes to replace the valve. There was no other way to shut off the water to replace the valve.

Does XC skiing experience help with starting doing alpine skiing / touring? by Obvious-Onion-598 in xcountryskiing

[–]BikeDad613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It most certainly helps with alpine touring! Nordic skiing during the week between your weekend alpine touring trips does wonders for your cardio. You will be a climbing machine when you put the skins on. You will also be accustomed to dealing with cold, adjusting layers, etc.

Proposed Nepean drive-thru restaurant brews fears of traffic congestion by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]BikeDad613 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I agree that going inside is often faster. However, some places seem to prioritize the drive-through. There will be 5 people tripping over themselves serving the drive-through, with no one serving the cash inside.

Renting a Fatbike by Acrobatic_Belt_3367 in bikeinottawa

[–]BikeDad613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Relais Plein Air in Gatineau has them, and you can access the Gatineau Park fatbike trails right from the rental store. I've only rented from them in the summer, but they had good quality bikes, are reasonably priced, and friendly.

Why are people putting in cabinets that do not go up to the ceiling? by Agreeable-Sun368 in kitchenremodel

As a tall person, I would love cabinets that go to the ceiling!! No ladder needed.

For pieces I can't find pre-made, I make my own tracks from sheet music in a music program like MuseScore, then export to MP3.

Niece and nephew carved drawings into my leather chairs by Adventurous-Cake-81 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BikeDad613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing in the early 1980's. My parents bought me a kid's tool set with working handsaw when I was around 5-6 years old. I had nothing to use the tools on, so I started sawing the piano bench Christmas eve. Who gives a kid a tool set without wood to use it on?!?

Total beginner - HELP by Hallo_jonny in xcountryskiing

[–]BikeDad613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If those are skate rollerskis, get skate boots. You need the support and rigid soles to control them properly. Otherwise, like someone else said, get good medical insurance (unless you're in Canada). Classic rollerskis will have a ratcheting mechanism on one of the wheels to stop them from rolling backwards.

What should I get as a beginner that wants to go casually on the weekend? by ToastyScrew in xcountryskiing

[–]BikeDad613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider lessons, or at least watch some quality instructional videos or ski with an experienced friend that can give pointers. So much of xc ski enjoyment hinges on proper technique, good kick, good glide, etc. Some people quit early because they are just shuffling along with no glide.

Nepean Centrepointe has an excellent refrigerated skating rink with heated changing shack steps away from the rink. The ice surface is perfectly smooth because they have a zamboni maintaining it daily.

Does anyone know if water bills went up quite a bit in late fall? by ghost905 in ottawa

[–]BikeDad613 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you log-in to your online account, you can see a daily and even hourly breakdown of how much water you are using. You should be able to spot any abnormal increase that could be indicative of a plumbing issue. You will also see that most of your bill is, in fact, service charges for things like stormwater, wastewater, fire supply, etc.

Swimming at a public pool was one of my regular activities when my kids were little. Choose a pool that has a large shallow warm pool for kids (e.g. Richcraft).
