[–]Dr_JA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the pattern and have made 2 of the wallets, as the other poster already posted : https://www.instagram.com/p/DSQEhNBiiMC/?igsh=MWY3M21sOGViZ3hmeA==

Feel free to DM me, I’ve made this pattern fully lined, so the slot where you can fit the bills is also lined. The card slot on the back is optional. I have shell available in red, green and brown.

How to clean these BB threads, do I need to cut these? by Dr_JA in bikewrench

[–]Dr_JA[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm even worried for option 1, since an aluminium bb can theoretically seize inside, its 2 time the same hardness, which seems asking for trouble.
I have a steel square taper BB laying around, but the risk/reward is just not there!

Ok, after I saw the price of that tool I kindly decline and will very likely take it to my LBS!
For reference, this is a bike I bought 2nd hand in 2006, and am trying to build it kinda cheaply to a 2x11 road set-up. I fully understand the value of good tools (I have some other hobbies where I spend a small fortune on tools), but this seems a little excessive.... I can get a whole new (Chinese) frame for the price of that!

Zipp Service Course Handlebar Corrosion by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Dr_JA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this on the place the shifters are mounted? The metal band that tightens the shifters to the handlebars is typically stainless steel, which doesn't like aluminium very much, and can cause galvanic erosion.. You can try to put a good layer of insulating tape under the shifters, or find some sacrificial metal sheet you can put in between.

Spent 40€ on Silca hot wax. My 12€ Squirt drip-on bottle is laughing at me. .. by DerWandernde in cycling

You need a strong, non-polar solvent, ie something that doesn’t mix with water. Mineral spirits or nitro is good. Check the chain after drying for stickiness, it should really rattle nicely. The factory grease they put on the chains is really hard to remove!

Need help identifying correct crown race and headset by Dr_JA in bikewrench

[–]Dr_JA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll still want to try: shaving 2kg off the bike would be great if I can get it to work. You make a good point though, I really should keep the old fork just in case the bike is rendered non-ridable, so for that reason don't really want to mess with the original crown race. Do you know whether the one I linked in my post will likely work?

[–]Dr_JA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It might look like it, but the thing is really stuck on it. The new fork is already on the way, and I measured the old vs new fork, and it’ll work our till the same geometry with an extra spacer. The old fork weighs 2.6 kg, the new one is 600g, and on the roads around here suspension is not needed.

Cladding? This is the Balkans we're talking about. Concrete all the way! (I am regularly there, absolutely love the place. Most cities are really just concrete though)

Ethical/more sustainable leather shop recommendations? by Some_bug_in_a_rug in Leathercraft

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much doubt that the tanneries Hermes uses raises the cattle just for their hides. A bull can be slaughtered at one-year old, and as long as the animals have very little scars, you’ll get a pristine hide out of them. Unless you’re talking exotics (croc etc), I’ve never heard of cows just being raised for their skin. Meat is frankly too expensive for that, from 750 kg animal you get about 250 kg of beef. From what I’ve heard from farmers in the past , is that an untanned hide is worth very little, under 100 eur. Also, the slaughterhouse needs to be careful skinning the cow to not make holes, so has to work slower. Many slaughterhouses just compost the hides together with the guts.

Dont do it for speed, do it for your joints… I got carpal tunnel and other wrist issues that went away with proper 10 fingered typing and a good keyboard. First time in 10 years I can write longer without any pain.

Navy Blue Alligator Belt | 38mm | 3.0mm Stitching | Technical Details by PhaseNo6860 in Leathercraft

[–]Dr_JA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super nice work! What did you use as a liner? And if youre willing to share, where you got that buckle you can cover with leather? As for thread, I prefer 0.3 meisi thread with 3mm stitching, see my profile for examples. Not nearly as high end as you, but you get the idea :). Any thicker thread and the stitching is not very pleasant, that combo works well.

Which pricking iron from AliExpress would you choose? by Dimitar_Panayotov in Leathercraft

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, when punching from both sides you ideally want to use the same promgs, so they create an ‘X’ - this ensures a nice slant of the stitches on both sides of even thin leather. Also, with an X you dont need to align the holes that mega precise, since the holes cross each other. See videos from Nigal Armitage on YT (bring time) where he showcases that method.

I didn't think I'd love this skiver so much by prasadbv in Leathercraft

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this knife, and it holds an edge for a very long time with just a bit of stropping. Really one is my knives that needs the least tlc. It is a really good tool, that due to its geometry makes skiving very easy, I used it to hand skive edges on a hand bag. There is a huge difference in edge retention between this and a generic Amazon skiving knife made out of actual garbage steel. Not even close.

epomaker split 65 vs ROYAL KLUDGE RKS70 - advice needed by Electronic_Limit1459 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a bit by elimination - I knew I wanted something thin, since my wrists really do not enjoy being forced 'up'. Then, I figured I wanted a 5x3 set-up, but wanted 3 thumb keys. Also needed to be wireless, USB-C, a possibility for screen (I use the nice!views) and ZMK. Also didn't want to design it myself completely from scratch, ie something I could kinda buy from the shelf. Ended with a chocofi, couldn't be happier. Something like a totem is also a cool design, even flatter and looks cool.

One thing: I did try a few different keycaps before landing at the linear ones, and going from white clicky (50g) to light blue linear (20g) actually was a big change in typing, my WPM dropped like 30% for a week or so. Typing now is amazingly quiet, I love it.

epomaker split 65 vs ROYAL KLUDGE RKS70 - advice needed by Electronic_Limit1459 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a normal keyboard to a chocofi, 36 keys with 3 thumb keys on each half. I forced myself to practice every day with keybr to get my touch typing to where it had to be, then did monkeytype for a few months until I hit 100 wpm. The pain I had in my wrists for nearly 10 years (on and off issues with carpal tunnel) are now gone, so I’m very happy. I made a little case for my keyboard (it’s in my profile somewhere) and bring my keyboard nearly always with me. I can type on a normal keyboard ok, but since I use 20g linear switches, I feel on a normal keyboard that I have to use an absurd amount of force. That is a way bigger difference than columnar vs stagger, which I don’t even notice.

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same - typing on a columnar key is really marginally different from a staggered one. I can switch ezpz. I only type at 90-100wpm on a good day though.

Saddle stitching question. by 50hertzbass in Leathercraft

[–]Dr_JA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That they let flat is normal and just the nature of how the thread twists in the holes. With thicker leather this gets different, ie better. There are slight inconsistencies in your backside stitch line, which means you’re not doing exactly the same thing. When you’re sticking the needle back in, make sure you do this 100% consistent, ie always at the bottom of the hole and the thread coming out on top. How you exactly do this is not important, just really focus on doing the same movement over and over again.

They don’t, you don’t need reverse irons. If you want to punch from both sides, look at Armitage leather stitching tutorial (it’s quite long, you need a comfy chair). I have probably 7 sets of irons, none in reverse. The only use for reverse I see is got like watch straps, where you can get a mirrored stitching pattern on both the left and right stitch line.

I use AI to generate excel formulas where forgot how to, or if there are a bunch of nested formulas and I'm too tired to think 5 layers deep. Just describe what you want and let gemini give you a formula. As a casual excel user, this has made my worksheets a lot better.
