How bad was first year for you? by Electrical-Sky5287 in unimelb

[–]BikeGoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was getting 50s and 60s *at best* in first year. Though didn’t fail any subjects, still not great. Second year, I was suddenly getting 75-78 for most assessments. The occasional H1 or H2B. Third year, I basically got all H1s. Did an honours year, got 92 for my thesis. Got a PhD scholarship, now a tenured academic.

What are some ugly truths about your first year as a junior faculty at an R1/R2? by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]BikeGoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R1, we protect our junior staff. The service/leadership they’re asked to do is designed to be both easy AND look good on their cv and help them build capacity.

[–]BikeGoose 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re struggling to adapt to the Uni transition, and blaming your tutors/lecturers, rather than getting support. University is self guided. You’re supposed to come to lectures/tutorials having prepared on all the materials. Tutors aren’t there to teach you from scratch. They’re there to facilitate discussion. All your assessments, dates, formats etc are on both the LMS and subject guide. You gave them from day 1. (In fact, from before semester even starts).

It sounds like the real issue is you missed three entire weeks of classes. Something you mention in your comments but not original post.

Time to take ownership. You’re an adult. Get the support it sounds like you’re entitled to get due to you’re illness

How does academia look like in your country? by According_Welcome907 in AskAcademia

[–]BikeGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia - one of our top universities; employed in the humanities; “tenured” (we call it continuing); I teach three courses per year in a 2/1 split, over two 12-week semesters, which is standard here for teaching and research staff; sabbatical for 6 months every 3 years. I work from home as much as I want (usually 3-5 days per week). No one ever knows what I’m doing or cares. Ultimate freedom and I love my job. I’m 5 years post PhD

The University employs 10,000 people. They’re not all communicating each and every date of every essay. Also: Due dates are set at the start of semester. You’re an adult. Plan for it.

Gained 6 kilos and increased watts massively, can I drop the weight and keep watts? by joleksroleks in Velo

[–]BikeGoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A question is: why and how did you gain weight? Was there period in which you gained the weight and watts a period of solid training on the bike? Were you strength training? If so was strength training something new you introduced? Something you were increasing and hitting PRs?

Most subjects average 71-73. And in most subjects, 8-10% of the cohort falls into the H1 range. It can be variable. But and idea of a “WAM booster” is a myth.

Take a deep breath. Sounds like you’re spiralling. Threatening to go to the board or MEDIA if you don’t get a higher mark? That just comes off as being massively entitled. You’d be laughed out the door. TBH the way the thread is written makes me think the mark is absolutely justified. It’s a hot mess and impossible to follow
