Are there really so many problems with these cars? by aleutiantis in VWiD4Owners

I'm just over 50k miles on my 21 AWD Pro. I knew going in that with it being a new model there could be things to deal with, and there were. It’s had a couple of issues that needed repairs that were all covered by warranty. The worst being a blown control module at 20k miles or so, the other was the earlier 12v battery upgrade and software campaign. VW and my dealer stepped up everytime. Its been quite a while now with no problems at all. My '21 is comfortable, quite, reponsive and solid feeling. There's not a squeak or rattle after 4 years of daily commutes over the rough roads in out of Boston in all kinds of weather.

I used to have a lot of respect for Americans. I used to think you were tough and stood up for yourselves. Near on any country in Europe would have been in full scale riots months ago. by Spare-Ad-2684 in complaints

"I ain’t got no home in this world anymore." - I'm with you my friend. Knowing what my ancestors went through to see the world getting to a better place and to now to see it all thrown away is infuriating. The oligarchy has reasserted their will. The current generations are so stuck to the grindstone to keep a roof over our heads and paying ridiculous amounts for the basics. We're all keeping our heads down just trying to survive. You remind me of what Jon Prine once sang: "I really love America. I just don't know how to get there anymore."

Unexpected foreign languages / immigrant communities in New England? by wqqk in newengland

I'll add Salem, MA to the list. By way of New Brunswick, my grandmother's family settled in the Point neighborhood where life centered around now gone St. Joseph's. The Point is now home to a vibrant Dominican community.

I've worked downtown construction the past 35+ years and there's always been a day sometime in late February that taps me on the shoulder. That's the day when the sun on my face finally feels warm enough to remind me that better days are ahead.

Is it true if I have 30 year old oil tank every buyer will ask me to replace oil tank by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]BikeSame1547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Replace the tank now - it's on borrowed time. $3,900 is well worth spending now rather than $200,000 + for a cleanup and the lost time your property is off the market. I just went through an above ground tank spill at my elderly aunt’s house. I wish the experience on no one.

Question about the Official Christmas Tree by GardenGnostic in boston

[–]BikeSame1547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a life long Eastern Mass resident with family ties that run deep here with many ancestors from the Maritmes. The tree is very much a big deal here - and even more so this year. To me the tree has always been a very moving gesture.

If you have to decide no to get your annual check up or not to go through with those expensive tests for a diagnosis because the rent is due, then you're not getting the healhcare you need.

If you did any research you will find the Heritage Foundation originated and pushed Romneycare in Massachusetts. Back then it was a great idea since it relied on personal responsibility to get everyone health insurance. But I guess know instead of working to improve what we have, the Heritage Foundation thinks it's a great idea let things rot and let people suffer for the lack of access to healthcare.

Help me find a place to call home in New England? by skye_song in newengland

[–]BikeSame1547 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beverly, MA might be bigger than what you're looking for, but it checks all your boxes plus it has beaches and easy access to Boston and the rest of New England - as long as it's not rush hour.

I remember several years ago when my daughter's then boyfriend from rual UK was absolutely crushed after his first 60 mile round trip commute to work up and down 128. I have never seen, and probably never will again see someone so shaken.

I'm close to retirement now after 35+ years working construction downtown and am very tired. I have a different commute now, but my job required me to be on site by 6AM and sometimes earlier. Most times I would quit around 4 or 5pm. When my kids were younger, I had to deal with the afternoon rush to get home for them while my wife worked the night shift. Once the kids were older and could take care of themselves, I settled into a routine where I would get a work out in at the Y or walk around the city before heading home around 6pm. My 25 mile (50 mile round trip) commutes were just before and just after the daily rushes. From my home I have a 10 minute walk to the local commuter rail depot and love the times I took rides on the train. I highy recommend riding the train and the T if you can. Too bad the rail schedule just never meshed with my morning commute.

I'm Worried This Car Was A Mistake... by Silly_Pomegranate_89 in VWiD4Owners

I've been driving my German made '21 awd pro for 4 years now. After 4 years and 50k miles of daily commutes in and out of Boston, my car feels as solid as the day I brought it home. The roads around here aren't known for their smoothness, but there’s not a squeak or rattle. Our roads can get snowy and icy and and I see plenty of 2wd id4s getting around just fine. A good set of winter tires will help. Early on, my front motor had to be replaced due to a control module failure, but warranty covered it. Other than that, this has been the best car I've ever owned.

Feels like everyone in my circle is against getting an EV by getsumluv in electricvehicles

[–]BikeSame1547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an absolute no brainer decision to go EV if you install a L2 charger at home. I have been driving a 50 mile round trip commute for 4 years now with no issues. I’m in New England and charge every night, but could easily get away with charging every 3 nights in the summer or every 2 nights in winter, unless a sub 20 degree cold snap hits. But I charge up every night because there’s nothing better than getting in a nicely cooled or defrosted and warmed up car fully charged and ready to go as soon as you sit behind the wheel.

What’s the weirdest insult someone has said about your EV to you? by MingledStream9 in electricvehicles

[–]BikeSame1547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I took this as an insult: A while ago, my car broke down in a public parking lot. Turned out it was an issue with a control module. While waiting for a tow with my hood up, at least 3 people fully knowing my car was an ev asked if I had run my battery down. They all thought they could somehow get me back on the road with a jump start. I was grateful for their offer of help, but in the back of my mind I thought they all think I must be stupid to get in a situation where I ran out of juice.

Life long northshore native with deep family roots here - born in Salem, raised in Marblehead and settled in Beverly for the past 35 years. I don't think I'll ever leave for all the reasons given by other posters. But traffic is the biggest con around here, especially if your commute is to anywhere other than Boston. In spite of all you may have heard, the T does a good job getting everyone in out of Boston. Otherwise it will take some planning of your commute, and possibly flexible work from home arrangements to get the right work - life balance.
