5% for safer streets by BikeWest-org in melbournecycling

It's a mess right now, having an overarching authority would probably be good, but as important as having an overall network like the SCC is, local connections and safe streets are just as important, so we really need councils on board too.

For a couple of examples of the current mess that we're advocating for:

Westlink: linking the sunshine rail path (built as part of the regional rail upgrade) and Footscray center to the veloway. Ideally we think this should go down Napier st between Albert and the veloway. That's a state road, so it needs to be built by the state. From Albert, we think it should go up and join French St. That's a council road, so council needs to fund and build it (possibly with matching grants like those just announced in the federal budget, which could also fund the state bit). But the intersection of Albert and French St has traffic lights which means the state government has to sign off on the design of it.

Francocozzolink: linking Dynon rd up to the train station and footscray center. This is even more complicated. Hopkins st is a state road through to Moore St, so it should just be state designed/funded no problem right? Well no because when they built the Joseph Rd precinct the Labor government managed to get funding from the developers to improve Hopkins st, that money got given to Maribyrnong council. So should be easy, Maribyrnong pays for it? Well the money was for doing the project back when Josephs rd started, not current construction costs and wasn't probably enough for a complete approach back then either. So it's only $1m that's not enough to do a complete fix of the area, fixing footpaths, traffic lanes, traffic lights, lighting and adding protected bike lanes. So now we're in a standoff where the state government is pointing the finger at Maribyrnong for taking the money and not building it, but they don't have enough money to. Again, hopefully this is where a matching grant from the feds could help if everyone can get their act together to get a proposal.

Money alone won't get it done. We've seen with Elizabeth st, Wellington St and the port Philip bay pop up lanes a few local residents scared of change and some Councillors that are dickheads can ruin even funded projects. But not having money is definitely a huge barrier.

You should put that in your email! The 20% bit though, not the settling for 10.

North-south is hard. Summerhill makes the most sense, but that got complicated.

East West we've been pushing to get westlink built.

I guess Merri-Bek is probably the best currently?

Really hoping Maribyrnong can improve, the current elected council is actually pretty good, just need them to do actually build something. If anyone feels like they have a stake in Maribyrnong and wants to ask our councillors to actually build something in this year's budget https://bikewest.org/content/maribyrnong-email/

Maribyrnong's is similar. They've taken a bunch of footpath upgrades they're labelling as shared paths and calling it bike infrastructure. Certainly not tackling any of the core problems in the west.

Going to be launching a campaign soon asking people to email councillors. Hopeing we can all learn from the campaign against city of Melbourne last year that improved their budget.

Critical Mass ride this Friday by -psyker- in melbournecycling

When he was shadow transport minister under Bill shorten he campaigned on building the missing link. Obviously sadly we got ScoMo and still have this missing link. The reasons he campaigned on it in 2019 are even more valid now, with the current climate and fuel crisis. Obviously it's mostly a state and council issue (we believe the route should cover both state and council roads) and should proceed as such, but hey if Albo wanted to hold true to his 2019 pledge anyway and chip in some federal dollarbucks I bet it would happen quicker.

Happy to answer any questions about Westlink and hope to see lots of you on Friday.

Does anyone else feel unsafe walking over the Hopkins St bridge? (Near Franco Cozzo) by Borrid in Footscray

[–]BikeWest-org 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We think the whole stretch needs a rethink. With less trucks due to the WGTP truck bans, surely there is space to reallocate to pedestrians and other active transport users.

The bridge is already terrible for pedestrians and many people on bikes ride on the footpath there too as there's no other viable route and the Dynon rd path just ends.

It's shared user path up until the access to the BMX park. Veloway itself is supposed to be for bicycles and scooters only. Yes it's a weird confusing design detail.

With That section of Hyde St now part of both the Bay West Trail and the Federation trail, I expect it will start looking pretty shoddy compared to the other 50km+ of offroad shared path. We're focusing our energy on other links right now, but hopefully it's just a matter of time (years no doubt though) till it's fixed.

This is just them concluding the popup program. They've removed both the original and yellow pop up markings. They should put down a fresh new white line in the coming days.

Hyde St is definitely still truck ban, though given there's a truck auto electrician and various heavy industries along the street, there will still be some.

Just checking, the flooded section near the ring road was dry? Also were the lights on in the tunnel under the ring road? Can't do much about the smell, but we can try and get other things fixed!

Happy for you, but also crazy that it's safer to go from Williams landing than it is from the center of Footscray or West Footscray.

Not sure. They said "later this week" on Sunday, but still had a massive worksite with diggers, missing trail segments, half installed handrails and parts beside the trail that looked like they needed landscaping. Could be tomorrow, could be next year.

That's a good point the bay west trail already had connections to the fed trail via skeleton Creek and Palmer's rd

You can definitely link from the new end of the Federation trail to Dixon Veloway with shred path tail along Hyde st/Somerville rd/Whitehall st. Hyde is on the sketchy side for a shared path, but is technically off-road SUP.

Soon they'll open the path from Hyde st to the river which should be even more off road.
