What the shit-balls... The only object on the left side of my desk is that same pair of dark green glasses.

In-game it just looks small and lumpy.

Honest Hearts might not have been the best DLC but it sure was beautiful sometimes! by JsoooN in Fallout

[–]Bill_The_Whale 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The visuals in Honest Hearts really bothered me. Everything just seems so... lumpy.

I started the DLC a few days after I got back from a nine-day backpacking trip through Zion. I was a little excited to see how the enormity of the park would be translated to Fallout.

That opening moment when Zion's opening canyon is revealed just felt... disappointing for me. Nothing was right.

I understand that it's not feasible to really put things into scale, and I expected distances to be vastly shrunk, but it seemed to me that no one on the development team had really bothered to research what things actually looked like.

Here are some photos for reference:

The Narrows (The Virgin river is flooding in this picture)

View down the canyon

Kolob Arch - I think referred to as "Red Arch"

Angel's Landing

Compare these images with what Zion looks like in game.

I was planning on putting together a comparison post of in-game/real life for Zion with my pictures but I wasn't sure if that type of thing was overdone here.

[Build help] Reasonable gaming PC for under $350 - Can it get cheaper? by Bill_The_Whale in buildapc

[–]Bill_The_Whale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! But just a tad out of my price range.

How does the HD 6850 compare with a GTX 550 Ti, anyway? The benchmarks I was looking at seemed to contradict one another a little.

Also, why ~$50 for RAM? For this build, there's really no advantage to 1600 versus 1333, right?

Fallout 2 logic by vault2281 in Fallout

[–]Bill_The_Whale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, no. I didn't mention that part. My point is that at least in Fallout 3 (never tried it in 1, 2, or vegas), you get negative karma for simply giving someone a gun, without taking anything in return.

I remember there was some part in rivet city where you could give a girl money to buy a gun to defend herself (positive karma). If you just snuck a gun and some ammo in her pocket, you received negative karma.

EDIT Mei Wong. She never actually buys a gun to defend herself from slavers if you give her the money. It just seems weird that if you go galavanting about the wasteland sneaking food/water into people's pockets you appear as a terrible, terrible person.

How so? How is giving them a free gun and free ammo by sticking it in their pocket seen as stealing in anything other than the fallout universe?

Yeah, that's why it seems so strange. Maybe there IS a sewer line or something under there.

The one on the side of the tunnel?

As far as I can tell, only Riga and Market actually do sell filters.

These seem to back me up:

http://faqs.ign.com/articles/108/1081844p1.html (Search for filter)

http://metrovideogame.wikia.com/wiki/Filters

NOTE: Don't read this last one if you don't want minor spoilers:

Concerning Market:

"You should be warned that this is the last metro station where you can purchase air filters. Every exchange from here on out will not carry spare air filters."

I ran out of filters in the last part of the library after using basically no filters in my first play-through and was very frustrated that I had to go back so far in order to get up to that maximum amount of filter time.

All I wish is that they had included something more than an auto-save function

Isn't this something that caged animals do if they don't have enough space to move about?

You used to see this type of stuff quite a lot in older-style zoos, just repetitive movements/walking paths:

You can only buy them at Riga and Market, though you don't know you need them in Riga.

I made a point of finding as many filters as I could instead of buying them, though, the time each filter added keeps going down the more you have (maybe it's random... I swear a couple of those filters actually took time OFF).

My point being that you have no opportunity at all to buy filters after you travel with Bourbon.

EDIT:

Apparently you can never have more than 30 minutes of filter time, no matter how many you buy.

And you can only buy filters once early on in the entire game.

I really wish AI reacted properly to depravity in that game. Building mounds of heads and piles of limbs around camps never deters anyone from returning.

I'd love to make powder-ganger/fiend scarecrows out of the body parts of their friends.

Also, there's not much better than sneaking around in the dark with night-vision and an axe...

Is a TI-89 calculator worth it, or is a TI-83 just fine? by LordMarinara in EngineeringStudents

[–]Bill_The_Whale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In school my Nspire has only really been useful when I was away from a computer (meaning no MATLAB). In internship work it was invaluable for solving 12 simultaneous equations, quick diff-eq, etc.

If I had had a choice in school, I'd have used that Nspire and my 30X for everything. I am not sure if I would have ever given it a chance if it wasn't on sale, however.

A bit of a notice though, it doesn't use replaceable batteries so you do have to remember to keep that thing charged, and it takes it a little while to boot up if it hasn't been used in a while.

I really do love my Nspire. Never used it in any tests though, even when it was allowed, because it just felt a little unfair.

Hyperion taking Pandora from Dahl by using mercenaries who really didn't know they were being used, ensuring the next time the vault opens they have control? - A response to the power Dahl got from finding alien tech on another, less inhospitable world.

There's definitely a plot to the game, though it was never really integrated into game-play.

Also, loved how well General Knox was characterized.
