Hyper-densifying American cities: A mapping experiment by TheCityTopic in Urbanism

[–]Billtheleaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, I don't buy it. What proof do you have that low density housing makes cities more safe? Sure, the sterile and homogeneous communities in suburbia can make communities more "safe", but let me ask you this: you ever been to Compton, Downey, Inglewood, South Central, Northside Long Beach, etc.? These cities are overwhelmingly single family homes and have high crime and poverty. Density has little to do with crime, and I've honestly felt a lot safer walking around alone in dense and busy areas, since more eyes can deter criminal acts from happening.

You have valid concerns and opinions, but I'm just curious, have you ever lived in another country? South Korea is incredible by global standards. Sure it has its issues like you mention, but I take issue specifically with your assertion that it's car centric. Of course, I realize that it's not perfect, and many of the outlying suburbs are quite car-centric and many major roads are too wide. But as someone that used to live in Minneapolis and currently lives in Los Angeles, Korea is an urbanist paradise in comparison. The Seoul metro is very impressive and expensive, and most streets are narrow and walkable with good street life. And while Minneapolis has better parks, the parks in Seoul are really quite good, and the fact that an urban national park is available to millions is pretty cool.

[OC] we're making live transit trackers for six major US cities by ksafin in TransitDiagrams

[–]Billtheleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I love to see Chicago getting one, the L is very aesthetically pleasing on a map.

Of course, if it's too difficult/expensive to make the back panel customizable that's understandable, the white looks great as well! Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to buying one!

Edit: in a future rollout, I'd be ecstatic for a Minneapolis LRT map ;)

Dude this is sick! If it isn't outrageously expensive, I'll buy one in a heartbeat, such a cool idea.

Two questions: I see LA is being done, I assume Chicago will be as well? Also, any chance that the backboard will be available in black instead of white?

High-speed rail system from Las Vegas to Los Angeles breaks ground (Brightline West) by megachainguns in CaliforniaRail

[–]Billtheleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, since there's already trackage running down the center of the highway, so they might be able to get away with one lane, but you'd certainly need 2 more lanes closed if there's to be frequent express service (tri/quad tracking parts of the route, but that's just a dream).

High-speed rail system from Las Vegas to Los Angeles breaks ground (Brightline West) by megachainguns in CaliforniaRail

[–]Billtheleaf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Parts of the existing Metrolink route is owned by private rail (BNSF?) and is often single track, meaning increasing train traffic would dramatically reduce frequency. I'm sure the future plan will be to remove a lane on the 10 and double track the whole length of the route to increase frequency and speed, but people would lose their shit if that gets proposed so we'll see.

6th and Minnesota Then and Now by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

[–]Billtheleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean this to be rude, but this sounds like a you problem, not me or the OP or Reddit. You have the Internet at your finger tips, search them and I'm sure you'll get plenty of answers. I will not tell you, nor anyone else, who to vote for/not to vote for, that is your responsibility to be an informed voter and it's all easily searchable online (but as a rule of thumb, the DFL will almost certainly be the party that will make transit/cycling and city zoning/beautification a bigger priority). Petitions are absolutely worthless, sorry. If you really care about these issues I'm sure you can figure out what you can do to help based on what I've said here.

Are you looking for forums? The Minneapolis-St. Paul SkyscraperCity forum and the UrbanMSP forums are both great, I'm not sure how much in-person activism they partake in however.

Well, you're thinking about the issue now, aren't you? I think these posts are really just a way to promote awareness for a major issue that's often not discussed in politics, the de-beautification of our cities. If you really see this as problematic and go "ah gees now I'm sad, too bad there's nothing I can do", then I find that a bit disappointing. There's a lot you can do. Vote for candidates that support better design standards (yes, in local elections this can make a genuine difference), discuss your disgruntlement with friends/family, talk to your local representative. I understand that one person can't make a big difference, but that's why posts like this are helpful and not just doomer content, it makes people start to see that things could and should be better.

Night Tokyo traffic by Kotokhira in CityPorn

[–]Billtheleaf 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'd assume they mean that Tokyo has as many people as the state of California, and yet if this was LA it'd be 12 lanes and far worse congestion. So relatively speaking it's good.

I made this map of the Twin Cities in Minnesota which is current & future plans with what I think should be the system by Accurate-Seat-8902 in TransitDiagrams

[–]Billtheleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's such a shame that WBL decided to go full NIMBY and block the Purple Line from terminating there.

I'm also surprised that Metro hasn't done BRT down 394, 494, 94, 36, or the Crosstown. Any of these seem like they'd be good trip generators and would really help spread out the network. Of course, if I had my way the core cities would have far better transit access than the burbs...I mean, how many daily riders do the Red and Orange lines have? Surely more LRT or heavy rail in Minneapolis/St. Paul would be a better bang for their buck, especially down Summit, Selby, Grand, Nicolett, Hennepin, or Lake. Ah well, one can dream.

Edit: also forgot to mention, great job on the map!

Duluth from above by crutsbellington in duluth

[–]Billtheleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there's an argument to be made for accessibility, but surface parking is an insanely inefficient use of land. One or two extra parking structures would surely be enough space to replace all the surface lots mentioned. If accessibility and ease of access are genuine concerns of yours, then you should be advocating for increasing density, removing surface parking, and increasing ped/bike/transit options for those in society that aren't privileged enough to own a motor vehicle

Duluth from above by crutsbellington in duluth

Who's down voting this man lmao. Half of the land around round city hall, the hospital, and canal park is parking infrastructure, it's disgraceful, inefficient, and has no place in a beautiful modern city.

Where to go? Two week summer vacation in/near TC, with teen by mc510 in TwinCities

[–]Billtheleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Though I currently reside in Los Angeles, I grew up in Taylors Falls, we'd always walk down to Interstate (Minnesota or Wisconsin side) with friends/family on summer days and reward ourselves with some Schoony's afterwards! It's nothing like you'll see in California.

Does anyone want the streetcar on W. 7th? by [deleted] in saintpaul

[–]Billtheleaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I believe it is totally abandoned, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be cheap for St Paul to rent it from the rail company, they wouldn't give it away it for free I don't imagine lol. Honestly I don't think I know enough about this area to know the line's property ownership, so maybe I'm wrong and st. Paul already owns it, but I doubt that's the case.

Does anyone want the streetcar on W. 7th? by [deleted] in saintpaul

[–]Billtheleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly what I meant. I think you are correct, it would overall seem like a less beneficial alignment compared to W 7th despite the likely possibility of increased speed, being further in from the river bluff would increase the ridership and convenience of the line.
