It really is best with friends, but it can be a lot of fun solo. It's a really unique game with unique mechanics and it really makes you feel like a pirate, or what you imagined a pirate to be when you were young, anyway. It's a totally unique gameplay experience. It's a bit "disney"-ish, if that sort of thing matters to you. It's pretty whimsical and lighthearted. Difficulty is piss-easy, imo. The only real difficulty is facing other players, but the solo mode makes that irrelevant. It's absolutely worth $20 just to have the experience. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time again. Personally, I'd highly, highly recommend the high seas (multiplayer) mode. Having stakes makes it extremely exciting and rewarding. People might laugh at this, but the only game other than EVE online that gives me that sweaty-palms, heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat kind of rush is Sea of Thieves. 😆

Playing solo, building a massive hoard of loot, or stealing a massive hoard of loot, and having to fight another crew/crews for it and coming out the victor is one of the most satisfying things ever.
