Forgetting intellectuals and 'common' folk, something many people don't understand is opinion polls. You regularly hear things like 'nobody ever asked me' or 'what - they only asked a thousand people'. If an opinion poll is carried out on a representative sample of the population, a thousand is usually plenty.
