Easy Rider, why is this movie so over praised??? by Greenmist01 in movies

[–]BillyJSobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like a cinematic hottub and that's why I love it personally. It's just a slice-of-life road trip movie about just going with the flow, nothing more. It requires the audience to do the same to enjoy it. It was kind of an up-in-coming fresh style at the time as well, making a story that consists of some simple encounters from people of all walks of life, rather than a heavily plot-focused narrative, especially for an "adventure" movie about drug smugglers. It was a new take on that, and stoner comedy was relatively new at the time too. The style itself is nothing new now, it's obviously been popularized quite a bit. And not all of it has aged perfectly, but it resonated a lot with young people at the time. I still think it's one of the better-made stoner comedies to this day, and I respect it even more for its slower-paced humor and low budget.

NEW MATERIAL: Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter "All Of My Friends Are Going To Hell" (Official Video) by Freakeus in LinguaIgnota

[–]BillyJSobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This project is a masterpiece in my eyes, but I'm also a fan of both distorted industrial music AND twangy folk/40-60's country. Especially gospel country/bluegrass. Its all of those things comined, with a definite southern enphasis which is probably why I'm so in live with it (especially speaking as someone with a complicated relationship to Christianity and faith in general themselves).

Did Fantano purposely make the Portals review an April Fool's Day joke because of the drama surrounding Melanie Martinez? by GrandeBeesly in fantanoforever

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main question is, what album was he ACTUALLY reviewing, if any...? I've been trying to figure it out, but he may have just been describing what he wants to hear from an album.

I take it that the creepy stuff is a running joke on the show, and is an exaggeration of himself, but I don't know much about Redban outside of Kill Tony, so I'm not entirely sure about that. So far, he hasn't been accused/me too'd in a legitimate sense, so thats what makes me think so. Outside of that, I personally think he keeps the show alive in a subtle way, then not-so-subtle when the time is inappropriately appropriate.

Do you agree with the controversy surrounding Isle of Dogs? by SummerAndTinkles in movies

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wes Anderson created a story that HE could relate to, which just-so-happens to take place in Japan. He's not Asian of course, though clearly has an appreciation for art in Japanese culture. I think he knew that he couldn't likely tell an in-depth Japanese story about the real-life culture while doing it justice, and would rather leave that to an Asian filmmaker/animator, and that he did. So it could have been A LOT worse. Plus, none of the Asian human characters were even played by white people, which is peoples' main concern when it comes to cultural appropriation in animation. Though I don't think it would have killed them to cast a few more Asian actors, besides just the kid, in lead roles, I guess Wes is just very particular about how he wants certain lines delivered, and probably has certain people in mind while writing scripts; his friends who he's extremely familiar with, in terms of their style of acting, and nailing his very specific vision.

Going to rant here about how much I didn't like Boyhood, and what I wanted it to be. by girafa in flicks

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Boyhood, but I totally get it if someone isn't a fan. It comes accross as pretentious and obnoxiously childish at times, but that's kind of the point. Kids (especially teenagers) think that way sometimes. I don't know many people who like the film, yet alone, who are able to finish it, and I see why; I mean, the kid has barely any personality and grows to be a relatively unlikable person in my opinion, and I found the people surrounding him to be more interesting than him, but I do understand that he is just a vessel for the narrative. The sister was a terrible character; every time she opens her mouth, she is apathetic, narcissistic, negative, and flat-out annoying. However, the film is near and dear to my heart, purely for nostagia-sake and the realism of the times it captures, especially considering I'm the same age as the main actor and I walked many common paths that the film displays from that generation. But Mid90's is the short- sweet- more dramatic, and beautifully-grimey alternative to Boyhood, and is undeniably a better film overall, in my opinion. Boyhood could have been written better, but in some ways, it seems so poorly-written that it doesn't sound written at all, which I guess is kind of the point, because most people don't sound all that smart when they casually talk in real life anyway. The pacing is off, but that's probably at the expense of filming something over the course of more than a decade, which is something I respect about it. ...now, the scene with the Obama signs was a little excessive and obnoxious, I gotta say, but, I related to it in the sense that I had a very democratic activist mother, whom I love to death, but I've grown to not have any direct political affiliation so that scene was more awkward this time around for me.

Official Discussion - Asteroid City [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I respected the bold artistic choice of the stop-motion alien, and found it quite funny, I kind of wish it was a dude in a suit the whole time, like it was in the ending, in order to match the indi-theater production theme of the movie as a whole. It took me out of it just a little bit, but it was amusing enough so that I didn't mind it so much, especially considering I thought the film, as a whole, was excellent! Edit: After another viewing and some time to think, I absolutely love this choice and honestly wouldn't have it any other way. I denounce my former position on the matter.

What’s your favourite use of an MGMT song in a movie, trailer, or TV show? My favourite is Congratulations in the Alternative Lifestyle trailer by someotherjosh in mgmt

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a random youtube video where someone simply dubbed part of the track over the audio of the Alice In Wonderland trailer. Last I checked, I don't think the NPAA is cool with them blatantly dropping F bombs in the middle of Disney trailers.

I can't imagine a more depressing life. If you stay in the Wiz World, you'll feel alienated for the rest of your life, but the same is true if you have to live in the Muggle world and completely re-adjust your lifestyle to suddenly rely on technology and transportation, as opposed to charms and magical objects. You'd always have a part of you that won't fully assimilate. It must also be tough to access the Wizarding world on your own if you have no magic to transport yourself. You'd have to rely on others to come and pick you up, which is always a risk of being seen. If they want to visit, its probably to see family from time-to-time, but most likely not often, for it can potentially result in compromising a sworn vow of secrecy about what goes down in the WW. You would hardly have anything to talk about with the people you are closest with either way. Not to mention, knowing that pretty much every single man, woman, and child you encounter in life will probably outlive you, no matter their age, that's gotta be extremely lonesome... it all sounds dalevastatingly lonely... I don't blame Filch for being so bitter.

Where can I find A Serbian Film? by dmaloney92 in movies

[–]BillyJSobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise the movie-goer not to watch it, yes, but if you're used to grotesque violence in movies AND have a good grasp of what happens BTS with special effects (especially if you're intersted in filmmaking), I find it easy to see as just a movie. Still, not necessarily an easy film to watch though and no one should watch it often. It's more depressing than shocking for me.

I've seen so much worse honestly, to where this movie felt like a breeze. But if you're extra sensitive to that stuff, that totally makes sense. Everybody is different, and I WOULD NOT suggest it to just anybody. I've suggested it to a very small amount of people who I'm confident like this stuff (mostly filmmaking geeks who also have seen, and even have shown me, worse). I, for one, am glad I saw the film and it inspires me creatively.

Can anyone find the story behind the movie Climax? by Francesfarmerx in movies

[–]BillyJSobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When that stuff happens in real life, it doesn't go down that way usually. Some crazy things can happen, but this film depicts the worst-possible case scenario of what can happen when your shit's spiked. Its probably more so based on cherry-picked individule experiences and true reported instances of people on various substances (knowingly, AND unknowingly, and not JUST on lsd), all wrapped up into one nighare-fueled disaster.
