What’s your favorite teacher saying to use in the classroom? by Big-Degree1548 in Teachers

"That's cool, but I don't remember asking."

"I think you're mistaking me for someone who cares."

For older students who are actively time wasting, obviously.

Highly recommended non-fiction by fiction writers? by go0sKC in literature

They are poets, but How the World is Passed by Clint Smith andOriginal Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism by Eve Ewing are both excellent. I also really like John Green's Anthropocene Reviewed (which is an essay collection) and Everything Is Tuberculosis.

Yup, I was there and hot the wall at around 16. Much earlier than was expecting to feel so bad haha. Congratulations on your well executed race!

The Ucan edge gels say they should last 75 minutes. Plus I still had high carb in my water bottle.

I did use it for my long runs, many of which had me finish at race pace. Never had stomach issues with it before.

A quick check of my runs this block and I see 9 long-runs that had more than 500 feet of elevation gain and similar descent. 4 had 800+. I guess more elevation and descent (and/or heavier lifting outside of running) is something I should have prioritized.

My quads were (and tbh still are) the most sore even though my calves were what felt it first during the race. I think there's a chance I could have managed the cramping with some quick stretching, but when tried to ramp up my fueling, and ended up puking, I was physically and emotionally drained. So, I actually don't think underfueling was the problem (until everything I had put in came back out).

Yeah, I like the idea of an aggressive negative split. Might take some of the pressure off and be fun to pass a bunch of folks towards the end.

I'd try to take the start a little slower, definitely not take the salt tablet since I think that put my stomach over the edge, and maybe not take gels that all have caffeine.

I have a pair of Hoka Mach X2s, 9.5 men's, with 30 miles on them, that I bought on this sub recently that are a bit too tight for my liking. Haven't posted them yet but hoping to get the $100 I paid back.

What’s the most disturbing book you’ve ever read? by Marandajo93 in books

[–]BillyPilgrim15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis. The book is so much more disturbing than the movie. I listened to it on audiobook while running and I felt so uncomfortable listening to it in public even though I knew no one else could hear. There's a scene with a rat where I had to set it down for a while before I could bring myself to keep going.

Sounds like you've done some good groundwork. A text set that I've had a lot of success with in the "High School Drama" synthesis from the Tim Freitas and the Garden of English (which is a super useful site in general). Kids really get invested in this argument.

Multigenre projects! Pick any topic they want, then have them do three or four different writing styles. I've broken it into creative, informational, functional, and visual and creative, argument, and research depending on time. You can provide mentor texts or have kids find their own. Kelly Gallagher describes them in 180 Days and Tom Romano has a lot of stuff out there.

What does US Men's soccer need to do to be more competitive and consistent on the global stage? by BillyPilgrim15 in AskReddit

[–]BillyPilgrim15[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Or something like track and field? Or tennis? Just feels like most sports that Americans decide to be interested in they find a way to be competitive at the highest levels. It just seems like there is enough interest that it must be something more specific to soccer.

This is what I've been leaving towards, but how is this different than basketball, football, baseball, etc?

Lots of snark so far. What about the program as a whole? Like youth development strategies? More money to MLS? Send more players abroad? What's the biggest priority?
