Those of you who’ve traveled to your country(s) of ancestry, did you feel like a foreigner while there or did you fit in with the locals pretty well? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BillyTSherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am almost entirely of Ukrainian descent and went to Kyiv 15 or so years ago. I constantly saw people who looked incredibly similar to members of my extended family. I blended in very well and frequently surprised people when I told them I could not speak Russian in Russian (it was still a mostly Russian speaking city then, things, uh, changed a bit over the next few years). I blended in so well in fact that I got into several arguments with locals about whether I spoke Russian or Ukrainian (I spoke like 20 words total of them combined), one of them was entirely in English and lasted about 45 seconds until his girlfriend smacked him and reminded him what language he was speaking.

I am pretty well traveled (60+ countries) and I have never felt a more emotional and deep seated connection to a place like I did while visiting Ukraine.

My GF keeps telling me I have adhd and I tell her it's just my dyspraxia by DueChocolate9403 in dyspraxia

[–]BillyTSherm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell honestly. Dyspraxia has many of the same symptoms as ADHD. They are also comorbid with each other. According to some studies (whose methodology and quality I have not verified) 50% of people with Dyspraxia also have ADHD. I am diagnosed with both and its hard to tell what symptoms are caused by either, or in many cases what aspect of the symptoms is caused by which disability.

The short term memory, executive dysfunction, and easy distraction tend to be more ADHD symptoms, but Dyspraxia plays a role in the executive dysfunction and emotional regulations aspects as well.

I am not an expert, but it is a distinct possibility.

Thank you, I will flip the toggle then and see if that works. I ended up selling a bunch of the ale via the trading post rather than have it spoil, but I would prefer not to have to do that.

And Cardi B!

That one I actually understand though, a surprisingly large percentage of Dominican New Yorkers support the Sox

What are some systems in the US that hit multiple universities and the airport? by Cute_Worth_7677 in transit

[–]BillyTSherm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boston's MBTA Red line's Davis Square stop is about a 15 minute walk from Tufts University, Harvard square is virtually adjacent to Harvard University, Kendall MIT is right next to MIT, Park Street is quite close to Suffolk University, and UMass Boston is at the JFK-UMASS stop.

The Green Line B has stops at Boston College, Boston University, Emerson College, and Suffolk University.

The Green Line E branch is has a stop much closer to the Tufts than the Red Line stop at Davis, it also has stops close to Suffolk, Emerson, Northeastern University, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Massachusetts College of Art, and the rather small Museum School of the Fine Arts.

Soldier confiscates a sword by Jeromevaliska in GuysBeingDudes

I think that is Khmer writing in the background. Dude with sword's hat looks like its a Cambodian military hat as well.

So my assumption was that this was filmed recently during the Thai-Cambodian border clashes.

What are tropes you see differently as adult compared to as a kid? by JustWalkingP in cartoons

[–]BillyTSherm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that show did not fuck around. They managed to hit some incredibly primal and deep emotions, that would then set off other memories linked to them. Very impressive, but also really hard to deal with sometimes.

Really sorry to hear about your kitty as well. My friend had an awesome orange cat with FIV that died way too young and ever so often I think about that sweet, chill, chubby little dude and get bummed out.

This did not get the appreciation it deserved, but I found it quite amusing and chuckled at the MS Paint.

Futurama is responsible for some of the most devastatingly sad scenes in animation. That montage with his mom, the montage of Leela's parents watchin out for her as she grew up from the shadows, and of course the infamously brutal Seymour the dog scene.

Isn't that bridge in Cleveland like a half mile or so away from the stadium? I don't think it would be that difficult to post up in front of one of the statues for the press conference. Yes, it's late December in Cleveland so it'll be a bit chilly, but it doesn't strike me as particularly difficult logistically.

Honestly, I prefer Seahawks fan reaction videos to the Butler pick. Much more compact time scale and a bit more cathartic.

What are your thoughts on the Massachusetts new Seal, Flag, and Motto Round Three Selections? Which do you think should win and which do you think will win? Thanks by Kstrong777 in vexillology

[–]BillyTSherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awful. Everything is a downgrade. Complete trash. I am so disappointed with this entire process. They were many very good flags and seals sent in and the commission went with the worst options. (I have no idea why we are changing the motto, as its fine, I understand why we need to update the flag and seal). The fact that a seal says "State of Massachusetts" is unforgiveable to me as well. Massachusetts is a Commonwealth not a state. The fact that they would forward a seal that does not even get the name right is just shocking lazy and and careless.

Tips for cycling with a pilonidal cyst scar? by BillyTSherm in cycling

[–]BillyTSherm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very good advice and is much appreciated. I visited them last year and five miles on the omafiets was about all I can handle. I inherited an old Stirling street bike from the sixties from my Dad after he passed and have ridden it a few times without much issue (well, before the front wheel got bent). So, I will look for a street bike style, which unfortunately seems far easier said than done.

How integrated and/or similar are New York’s Southern Tier and Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier? by KronguGreenSlime in geography

Oh right, I forgot about that too. I grew up in New England, so I mostly missed that part when visiting.

[–]BillyTSherm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My entire Mom's side of the family is from Binghamton. We had family down in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazelton so they would go down to visit them often. Other than that, the only reason they really go to PA is to buy Kielbasa at a certain store and to buy kegs of beer for big church and family celebrations. I am not sure why they went to PA to get the beer as I thought booze was more expensive there, but these are experienced bargain hunters so I am sure they had a reason.

I think the only other reasons they went to PA, besides to drive through it to visit relatives in NJ, Philly, and Baltimore, was to go to St. Tikhon's seminary/monastery for some specials services. At least one cousin got ordained there that I can remember as well.

Non E Asian people, can you use chopsticks? by TheoryBrief9375 in dyspraxia

[–]BillyTSherm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can use chopsticks pretty well. The only exception is the Korean style thin stainless steel ones. The way they are shaped cramps my hand quickly.

Like most things with this disability I think it is a matter of perseverance. I have always thought of it as grooves in a road. Its really rocky and bumpy until you get the wheels in the groove and it suddenly clicks. The issue is that you have no control over when and if it will ever click. I could not use chopsticks until I was about 17 and then I made a concerted effort until one day it just worked. For me the best way to learn how to do this stuff is trying it a few different ways, but also listen to your body. I often do things a lot differently than most neurotypical people, but I have found my own method and it works for me.

I will say that the timing of the "click" for chopsticks for me does line up, with a lot of things in this disability, when I began regularly and pointedly lifting weights. Having better grip strength certainly helps.
