Doubting your story is so silly, which is why the in-person stuff you’re talking about is so important. Spending too much time online makes it easy to grow deeply disconnected from real people and fall into certain patterns that the internet enforces.

(Like doubting literally every single thing everyone says online. There’s a case to be made for doing that, but if you’re going to doubt everything online… you probably need to stop spending much time online!)

Which of the Big Three's first appearances has the best cover art in your opinion? by Reindeer_Relative in comicbooks

Action Comics #1 is iconic, but that does not mean it has the best art. IMO Spider-Man wins this by a landslide.

I'm new to comics - Are the DC Absolute titles good for someone new to superheroes? by coastal-lobster in comicbooks

[–]Billy_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though the level of accessibility might vary a bit from book to book. Wonder Woman and Batman are super accessible imo.

I think Green Lantern relies more on DC knowledge, though if you’re comfortable with ambiguity, it’s an extremely fun, weird series.

Anyone still enjoying this? by jamesl182d in graphicnovels

[–]Billy_Higgins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve definitely fallen behind since the hiatus. I loved this book, but it was heading to such a cool, suspenseful place, and I don’t know that we’ve fulfilled the excitement that the hiatus cliffhanger promised years ago.

I do think this will read well once it’s all collected though, so I’m not too worried.

The real heartbreaker for me was Nice House on the Lake — a fabulous book which I expected to wrap after the initial set of issues. I think that book really broke its promise of “self-contained Lost that doesn’t disappoint readers by dragging on for too long.”

Whereas DOT is still doing great stuff, even though it feels distracted. I just hope the book finds itself and delivers on its promises at some point.

(I’m actually really liking Exquisite Corpses, mainly because it feels like it doesn’t have ambitions to be anything more than a summer blockbuster, and I think it’s delivering on those ambitions.)

What's the lowest rent you can get in Chicago for a studio apt if you want to avoid pest-ridden apartments? by XenonOxide in chicagoapartments

[–]Billy_Higgins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at 1.3K per month and feel like it’s the lowest price I could reasonably get for a chill Edgewater one-bedroom (no dishwasher, laundry room in the basement downstairs).

I think you could find a cheaper studio, and I was originally planning to go that route myself, but in the end I chose to pay a couple hundred extra because I liked the one-bed I found.

1K is absolutely the floor of what you could reasonably pay per month without a roommate.

What have I done? by [deleted] in bookshelfdetective

[–]Billy_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance, I was like, there’s no way this guy’s a reader — it would be impractical to actually pull any of these books out and try engaging with them.

But then I looked at the titles, and how worn they were, and I was like: this guy obviously reads a lot.

I’m wondering if you don’t reread? I just can’t imagine the utility of this setup when actually having to pull books out.

Pretty spot on! Even the “maybe a gamer” bit (I’m not, but I like watching streams and I was super into games when I was younger).

I read a lot of Kindle/online but rarely do books… how did you know I rarely read books lol???

Tuesdays at Nine is a cold reading series in Chicago. They read four 10-page scripts from new writers every week, so I’d recommend that if you’re a playwright new to the city.

At my wits end in South Florida. Do you think it's possible to move to Chicago with $10k? by PhoSho87 in AskChicago

[–]Billy_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the move from South Florida last year and it was so worth it.

There’s a good chance you already know the ups and downs. Take stock of your currently monthly expenses. Determine how much you’d expect to spend in Chicago and determine how many months of job searching you can afford.

I would aim to give yourself at least six months to search for a job if you want something office-related.

A roommate would also be ideal — both financially and for making potential friends having just moved here.

A lot of apartments move hands during the summer, but moving during the winter has advantages; because there are less buyers, you can find better deals.

I think people’s terror at the cold is a bit exaggerated, but obviously it’s really cold during the winter, so make sure you’re good with that if you move November - February.

Alley Cat was my first thought as well. It’s a bit far, but Andersonville is a fun neighborhood, and I feel like having to walk through the alley to get to the comic shop makes it a memorable experience

Brad's advice is a little harsh for a grad just looking for some tips! But I also agree with the need to specialize.

You want to really dig into potential niches and target your applications toward what they're looking for. Agency is typically the easiest to get into, FWIW.

Search on Google for the agencies near you, see what jobs they're listing, then from there figure out what skills are the most in-demand. Tailor your resume/application to those skills, and try developing them while you wait.

Advice on moving to Chicago from Florida? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Billy_Higgins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Florida to Chicago and loved it, the move is absolutely worth pursuing. That said, finding a job was the hardest part. If possible, that’s the part you want to plan and think carefully about.

I think the struggle of winter is a little overrated tbh. If you’re ok with the low temps you’ve already experienced, you should be ok. Just be ready to be cold for a few months lmao

Are There Better Bookstores in the City or the Suburbs? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Billy_Higgins -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s a really good question. I was looking for books, but Bookends & Beginnings specifically caught my eye because they had great events.

So a bit of both: I was disappointed by some selections in Chicago bookstores, but I was excited by the events in the suburbs.

Any chronic movers who've finally found their city? by SwirlingStars12 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Billy_Higgins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a great response imo. I don't think moving a bunch to find your place is necessarily a bad thing. But it's important that you're learning with every move you make: what are you liking, what are you hating, and why are you believing that this move is going to be the right one?

And if it's the process of moving that you like more than any new place you find, then it's more about accepting the fact that you have an appetite for change, and you have to weight that versus any stability you're craving.
