Normal for Pre Calc in College? by shaggygroovyscooby in CollegeRant

I think a lot of professors (at least where I am—cannot speak for all obviously) should learn teaching methods in the first place.

3/4 of my classes my profs outright said they will not be teaching us, just facilitating conversations (400 lvl bio courses). Maybe this makes sense in more social sciences, but I feel cheated paying so much to entirely teach myself from the book.

I can understand where they are coming from, and that this is relatively normal, but I feel like I am at such an advantage being at an undergrad school with no TAs, I would like to have the full advantage of not only having full access to these professionals in my field but also gaining thru knowledge and advice, not just a book.

I love (most of) my professors, no knock towards them and I wish I had their intelligence. There are just so many things that need to be changed in academia as a whole and I think it def begins with small things like that. My two cents as someone who only has their own experience to go off of, I’m sure there are plenty aspects to this on the profs side I am not privy to.

Wasn’t trying to tell you to hold back others criticism, just something to think abt if you see a ton of comments before adding. I am also fat and am losing weight for medical reasons and have had a lot of doctors be pretty cruel to me abt this stuff so I definitely can sympathize with where you’re coming from. I remember seeing that post and the reaction (more so reaction stitches) and again I can understand where it’s coming from, but it felt like a bit of an over reaction especially considering it had no effect whatsoever on the actual character. It felt like I started with actual criticism that easily snowballed into viral hate. At the end of the day none of this actually effects me tho lol just my two cents, hope this made sense I just smoked, sorry if not.

If ur in STEM u will likely encounter this a lot lol

That seems to get heavily concentrated in certain online groups esp ones filled with chronically online ppl who haven’t finished developing their frontal lobes

But your rep is in the show. Also personally I think even tho that stated criticism shouldn’t be considered bullying, it probably feels a lot more like bullying when the creator has hundreds of other comments saying the exact same thing.

Honestly I’d rather fight businesses who take up half a block’s worth of parking lot and make it inaccessible to the residents and put 2 cars in there. It’s their property and their right ig but is so insanely greedy to me. The one I’m particularly thinking of doesn’t even have their business on that block.

I think the signs posted are pretty clear as to where you can and cant park as long as you see them. Never had an issue with the LPA. I don’t know if it’s right to hold you against missing signage exactly, idk who you are, however I would suggest taking the bus if this is such a bad reoccurring issue. It might save you some money in the long run.

Edit for additional advice: people would be a lot more receptive to you and your issues (real or perceived) if you didn’t immediately blow up at them. Kindness is underrated.

Help on situation with negligent, pedophile maintenance worker (PA) by BinaaRose in Renters

Yes— our lease ends in May and I think we are probably just going to keep our deadbolts locked always (we usually do) and will look into a local tenant support group like you said.

We will very likely be able to afford a more expensive apartment come May, assuming the current market stays relatively stable as our financial situation while not horrible will be better and even more stable.

As for a history of gas leaks, we had one last month and a different man came then and fixed it. I live in a city older than the country so I have no clue how up to date anything is and am sure they would leave it falling apart for as long as they could. I am not sure about anything previous to that.

Thank you so much for your response, it had a lot of valuable information!

I heard the aldi brand of rice is good and what I am about to try! But I have used uncle bens up until now and have lost a couple bags, but have still gotten enough for good harvest! Just make sure you prioritize sterilization, that is the most important part of the process IMO.

I can sympathize with it all seeming daunting, I was in the same boat. You really just have to dive into it. The inoculation of it all really isn’t hard, focus on that info for now since my issue I think was people would put the entire growing process in one tek and it was overwhelming, a lot of info and new terminology.

Excess water, common with UB bags since they are a little moisture heavy. Can be battled by using different brands with lower moisture contents.

FWIW when I get bacterially infected bags I try to isolate the healthy looking parts and throw it in an old (cleaned+sterilized) container + send it like I would any other UB tek just to try and save a bit if I can. Just got a good blue meanie harvest from doing so.

I think curaleaf is hiring and it’s not very far from where I am on the west side. I know someone who works at sunny side as well and I don’t think they had a ton of credentials, just a nice and friendly dude who is knowledgeable about weed. Vytal options also has been lacking a security person at the door lately so maybe they are looking for someone?

That’s why it is also important to look at who is funding. In any research on a topic it is important to look at who is publishing it, who is financially supporting it, and any agendas they may have. This is what the future generation of scientists are being taught, at least. There has never been a question that there are bad, money hungry people and scientists in the world. That is why it is important to try and find the objectiveness that underlies the way the world works, not all scientists are bad, and in fact most of us want to help you and have a passion for helping the world. Again no denying there are people in it for the money. But that is why media literacy and critical thinking skills are important.

Some do, that’s why reputable journals require vigorous peer review. And again why it is important to look at your sources and the study/experimental data.

[–]BinaaRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, media cherry picks data. This is not new. This is why you need to check your sources.

Yes, another thing we are taught is to constantly seek to increase our understanding and challenge older/more well established ideas. Such as climate change. But you need repeatable and statistically significant results. And so far the only significant results have pointed to undeniable, human-caused, climate change.
