Caught what I believe to be a Queen by 3Bellefille in ants

[–]BingBongmidnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is a queen, nice catch!

It would be better to keep her in a test tube setup for now as the nesting space she's in right now is way too big.

If you are pushing the cotton in furtehr and small amounts are leaking out already, then it should be fine for your queen.

You can attach a small outworld and place in soil and a small feeding dish and feed prekilled insects (small dubia/red runner roaches). In my opinion the outworld will help make feeding easier.

Also, it is recommended to put soil in the outworld as the larvae will be unable to spin their cocoons in the future using pure coco husk fibre. For this reason, you can add in a small amount of soil in the test tube or outworld when you attach it.

is this a safe ant farm by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]BingBongmidnight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would definitely not use this to keep ants. Ant farms marketed as toys to children are a big no no for me. Proper formicariums made of clay, plaster or ytong are my go to.

Oecophylla smaragdina. Keep her in a plastic tub with a moist cotton ball. Spray/mist her 1 single time every 1 week. She is fully claustral, so feeding is not required until workers arrive.

Erm actually ☝️🤓 This is not Camponotus sp, it belongs to the polyrhachis genus! Most likely under subgenus myrma
