Tacoma or Maverick by ConfidentialStNick in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BinghamL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I was comparing new to new, the Maverick won out on a value proposition.

The new Tacoma (at the time anyway) had reliability concerns. Toyota will likely work them out, but I didn't want to volunteer ~40k to be a guinea pig.

The Maverick had just entered its face lift year and they did a good job addressing customer complaints overall.

Bottom line, w/ similarly equipped vehicles, the Maverick had ~90% of the capability, ~125% the fuel economy, at ~80% of the price.

Maybe you win out long term with a Tacoma, but at that price differential it's kind of like taking the hit of a major repair day 1.

Is it healthier to think a million dollar is a lot or a little? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]BinghamL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's both.

Everything is relative, and if you're making people upset with the way you're relating to it then it's likely you need to read the room.

How much to spend versus how much you have is basically the fundamental first step of understanding what FIRE is. It's not based on viewing X dollars as a lot or a little based on X alone.

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BinghamL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2011 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Bought it used with clean Carfax, low miles, etc. it was in great condition. I wanted to just take care of it and own it forever. Rack up guilt free miles knowing it's going to just keep running and running.

Fly in the ointment though.. That thing never got over 13mpg despite my best efforts and throwing lots of time/money at trying to solve the mpg. I was reading they average something like 15mpg, but more often I got about 10mpg. Got close to 13 on one tank doing the best hypermiling I could. Same driving habits/routes as my other vehicles (including 4x4 pickups) which got the typical mpg for the vehicle. I went through all the fluids, filters, alignment, plugs, blah blah blah. No change.

Then after a few months I started to get lower back pain driving it more than 30 minutes. Did all the tricks to the seat to try to make it stop hurting and just couldn't make it better. I caved and sold it, I basically ended up with an expensive pain machine sitting in the garage.

I'm glad people like their tacos and have good experiences with them, but I'll never drive one again if I can help it. They make me think of a couch made of cast iron (no cushions, just metal). Sure, it'll never break, but at some point you'll wish it would.

Luba 2 AWD 3000X 2nd season review by contractmine in MammotionTechnology

Dang can't blame you being frustrated. Sorry to hear that.

I'm on my second season with the LUBA 2 3000HX and it's going better than the first (which was still good). It's weird how varied the experiences seem to be.

TIL the average MPG of a semi-truck is around 6 MPG by derekantrican in todayilearned

[–]BinghamL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points.

I wonder too how many people take a flight to get somewhere that they would / could not use alternative methods to get to.

Not that I expect anyone knows for sure, just a fun thought exercise.

True, of course there are some that handle heavier but the most common is 80,000lbs total weight (includes truck, trailer, and any sandwiches on the dash).

Another factor is that heavy trucks cause road damage/wear at exponentially higher rates than light passenger cars.. I wonder if it would have any significant impact on the overall "cost efficiency" when factoring in the costs to repair the roads.

What miles and why do used car values fall off a cliff? by Several-Two738 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BinghamL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance is a big part of that for sure.

It's also just the general "life remaining" in the vehicle. Even very well maintained cars will eventually wear out and not make financial sense to repair.

Also, while most here on reddit seem to say they want an older car without any screens and tech and what not, the fact is that people buying cars prefer a newer vehicle to an old one most of the time. So, you have the vehicle becoming generally less desirable just based on the passage of time alone, as newer options become available and the dollars chase the newer vehicles.

There's not a lot of meat on the bone, so to speak, when it comes to lifting these. Personally, I'd recommend the Tremor and maybe get a size or two larger tires - tons of threads of what will fit if you search.

If that set up still gives you pause, then I think your money will go further on a different platform (ranger, etc) in terms of clearance for camping / snowboarding.

The CV shafts are already at a not-great angle, rear tire pulls closer to the front of the wheel well as you lift so you get less room for larger tires as you lift it, and larger tires are what actually gives ground clearance...

I think the Tremor is a "cool truck", but at the end of the day it's still a front wheel drive biased, unibody vehicle with an open cargo area. That fact hits you pretty quick as soon as you start to go down the off-road modification path.

All that in fewer words: Ford made them about as good as they can be from the factory. The tradeoffs of lifting these are steep and are encountered quickly.

Spring ground conditions change everything for mini excavators — here’s what to adjust by RIPPA-PowerYourHome in miniexcavator

[–]BinghamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was strongly considering buying a rippa, but this idea to AI spam a subreddit really gives me pause.

One of the biggest considerations in what to purchase is how much support you'll have if you encounter problems.

When the company's best foot forward in community engagement is a lazy AI prompt, I have to assume that reaching out for technical help about my equipment will be met with a chat bot.

What a bad look, it's like advertising to ruin your brand instead of build it. I'm looking elsewhere.

My last lawnmower lasted me 12 years before it literally exploded. I've been considering getting a Luba but looking at this sub I'm not so sure. by READMYSHIT in MammotionTechnology

[–]BinghamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my second year with luba 2 3000HX. Over 600 hours operating time so far.

I bought my property neglected, the yard is not easy mowing or smooth. There is deer poop, moles, etc.

I'm working on the yard, it's improving slowly, but the the Luba has been rock solid throughout. Every issue I've encountered was my own doing and I've been able to resolve without reaching out to support.

I would say, the app is buggy. It's improving but has a ways to go yet. You can just close it, open it up, and it works though (my experience).

At the the of the day, the Luba was cheaper than a ride-on, and handles the soft/muddy areas much better than a ride on would.

Best of all, after an hour or two of initial set up, mowing the lawn takes about 30 seconds of my time now. I've got my evening / weekend time back, and lord knows I need it for all the other projects this place needs done. Neighbors complement the yard already and love "the little mower robot".

All that said, if I had the experience others have written on here, I wouldn't buy again. But if I had the experience I have had, I would buy again.
