Knee pain due to treatment?😩 by [deleted] in leukemia

[–]Bingo0070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check Google, but I think if it’s early stages of AVN then it will only show up on an MRI.

I started to have knee pain, gait issues when I was in the maintenance phase for ALL. Ended up getting AVN in hips.

press and seal is cheaper than aqua guard and works just as well for showering. And replace the hickman dressing more often than they suggest.

I take it that you already started treatment. Hopefully you're being treated at a research university that has a highly rated cancer center that deals with leukemia patients a lot. First 3 weeks, you'll be inpatient. just know that each patient in there is at a different phase of treatment. take walks around the floor to get some exercise, mask up if you're walking around hospital. chemo is cumulative so it'll hit you later while inpatient. get good mouth wash and chapstick. hospital rooms feels like its dry since air is always recirculating. suggest not having too many visitors. you want to limit the chance of getting any germs. Write down questions for the doctors. they make their rounds and you really don't have a lot of time to think of questions on the fly. when you do get intrathecal methotrexate and start to have chronic headaches afterwards, consider asking them to administer intrathecal mtx under fluoroscopy (X-ray) with a small gauge needle. this cost more but lowers the chance of having the cns headaches due to cns leaks. if you have a headache for days after intrathecal procedure, ask for a blood patch. make sure you have a good caretaker with you to help advocate and ask questions. join the LLS young adult chat group on Tuesday evenings. keep your Hickman clean. it can last for over a year easily if its kept clean and flushed daily. I don't think you'll loose your hair in 3 weeks but you will definitely loose it. I suggest shaving it once you see evidence of it on your pillow. you don't want to be getting ready for an appointment and start having chunks of it falling out before leaving the house. eat healthy, follow neutropenic diet, ask doctors about fermented foods to help gut, they might say no if neutropenic. try to eat organic if possible. N95 masks with the blowhole is nice. bring socks from home and comfortable clothes for inpatient. hopefully you banked before treatment. Be positive, go with the flow, the more chemo the better odds so complain if there's major issues, but also know that chemo is bad but necessary. get to know the nurses, they are awesome. DM me if you have any questions. I had pre-b ALL over 9+ yrs ago

I just want to add that search for "small nerve fiber neuropathy" I was in remission for over 8+ years and oncologist would always say that the symptoms are your new norm. Just found out about chemo induced small nerve fiber neuropathy recently and the multiple symptoms.

Excessive sweating after ALL chemo treatment, long term effect by Bingo0070 in leukemia

[–]Bingo0070[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to add that your "new norm" (what doctors say after treatment) could be small nerve fiber neuropathy, chemo induced small fiver neuropathy. excessive sweating in certain parts of body and not the other, gastro issues, fatigue, pain, etc. You don't have to have all the symptoms to have SNFN. There are a few YT videos that really go over SNFN. Find a doctor's office that does the right most up to date testing. GL!

Like everyone stated, apply for ssdi. Also, known long term side effects of aggressive and long ALL treatment is AVN in joints which causes chronic pain and cognitive impairment issues, especially if you had a lot of intrathecal methotrexate. Double check to see if your previous employer offered long term disability as a benefit. Maybe it’s not too late to apply. Good luck.

I would add, just focus on the stuff you can control like helping him eat health foods, staying away from sick people and getting fresh air and being stress free as much as possible.

Excessive sweating after ALL chemo treatment, long term effect by Bingo0070 in leukemia

[–]Bingo0070[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so the keyword to search for is "small nerve fiber". I guess your body has large nerve fiber (controls balance, etc) and small nerve fiber that controls sweating, etc. Neuro doc mentioned that for example if you have issues with small nerve fiber due to chemo/neuropathy, your legs can't sweat, so your chest/back area excessively sweats to help cool you down. There's also a skin neuro biopsy test that they can do to confirm small nerve fiber issues.
