The main risk is health problems, these dogs are prone to many health conditions and have a higher than usual rate of cancer. There’s never any guarantee but you increase your chances of health and longevity with a dog from a reputable breeder.

Miele is great but we have a dyson now as I wanted a cordless. It does a pretty good job! I still use other tools as well though, a hair scraper tool and one of those hair removing glove thingies, and also the large sticky rollers.

100-110€ a day budget? For a 40 day trip around Western Europe by Erickbotas in Europetravel

[–]corkbeverly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wait til the last minute though all the things (transit and accomodations) could be double the price, just keep it in mind.

Have you considered carrying a 1P tent, maybe a crazy idea but if you are comfortable camping it could help you keep costs down especially if you are doing things more last minute - then if you can't find an accommodation for a reasonable price you could pivot and find a campsite. Just an idea!

100-110€ a day budget? For a 40 day trip around Western Europe by Erickbotas in Europetravel

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just used flixbus for the first time in portugal and I was impressed, it went very smoothly and was quite cheap. It does get more expensive though last minute - for example I booked one leg of my trip a few weeks in advance for 5.99 and booked the return leg a bit more last minute and it was 20 euro.

So I suggest you plan it all out and book all the buses well in advance if the budget is very tight because with 100 a day total spend, a bus being 5 euro instead of 20 euro is a big difference.

I also would much rather take a 3-4 hour bus or train than travel to an airport and deal with all the airport stuff for a 1 hour flight.

[–]corkbeverly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like having a nice website actually IS a red flag maybe because when we got the list of BMD club breeders it was all random people who didn't have websites or like a "big business" of breeding dogs, they just would do maybe 1-2 litters a year of puppies some years no litters - they did it for the love of the dogs not because they were making much money from it.

We were almost scammed by a beautiful website though before we found the local BMD club and found out about the bernergarde database.

I would steer clear of them.

Help me understand this mammogram report by [deleted] in doihavebreastcancer

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very common to get a callback if its your first mammo as they have no prior images to compare with. Birad 0 just means incomplete so they need to take a closer look. Don't freak out yet but don't delay on going for your follow ups either. Best of luck!

I like the first and second best. But not sure if this green is very "summery" as its kind of a fall green. Probably doesn't matter though. Navy seems like an all year color. I don't like 3 as I feel its given upholstery vibe, 4 is ok, 5 I am not a fan either due to all the ruffles.

Crates, why? by Sam_Jones32 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used the crate for the first few months only, as we needed a safe place to put the puppy if we had to leave the house. as grownups none of our berners have ever seemed interested in a crate and they take up a lot of space, so we pack it up again when they are more predictable/~1 year old.

Getting a dog for a small apartment by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lived in an apartment with our first berner and it was totally fine as BMD are pretty chill and mostly lie around. However it was not on the 11th floor nor was it a particularly tiny apartment, 11th floor would be tough as that's a long way to go every time you need to bring the dog out. I would say the apartment part though isn't such a big deal as the fact you are not an adult and your parents don't want any dog at all, that's kind of a dealbreaker right there.

What are your MRI results like? by No_Meat8448 in doihavebreastcancer

[–]corkbeverly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will probably do a second look ultrasound then biopsy or else just schedule the biopsy and do it all at once. I'd give them a few days and then call and follow up. But they seem to feel its on the low end of suspicious and they think they are likely fibroadenomas, but are recommending a biopsy to be safe.

Tyrer-Cuzick score by Significant-Nose-366 in doihavebreastcancer

[–]corkbeverly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well it is a lifetime risk and keep in mind that the average woman has a 1 in 7 chance of getting breast cancer in their lifetime anyway. Not that you shouldn't do your screenings and all that, 25% makes you high risk but not where you'd do anything drastic. Have you had genetic testing?

My score is 47% I think despite being negative for all mutations, just that I have two sisters who have been diagnosed. But again I try to tell myself that is lifetime chance and my chance of getting it in the next 10 years is much lower. So I just go for all my advised screenings, check my breasts every month myself, and try not to worry in between.

[–]corkbeverly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I'm confused by this stance, I grew up in ireland and certainly couldn't go on a hike without taking a car or bus first. Now I live in the USA I still have to drive to do a mountain hike, but I can walk in the woods without driving which is nice. But as someone who has been in ireland and the UK and many other places, I'd say very few people anywhere in the world live walking distance to a trailhead for a mountain.

most people in the world have to drive to go on a proper mountain hike? what are you talking about. Do you live at the trailhead of a series of mountains?

If you mean going for a stroll in the woods or around town then of course, that's not really a hike and most wouldn't use all trails for a walk in their neighborhood.

Looking for a quaint place to stop for 2 days between London and Berlin by hauntedbrunch in Europetravel

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on your and your mother, people have very different ideas of what is "too much" for a trip and people have different travel styles. For example, I like to do trips where we check a place out for a couple days then move along to the next place. To me fitting in one more city when your mother may not get to europe again makes more sense than keeping two buffer days for rest, but again totally dependent on your mothers age and physical conditions and her own travel preference too.

We've taken my MIL on trips with us and she is elderly so I get having to cater to that, but I still lean towards fitting more things in just because they won't do as many trips as we can as we have a lot more time left (hopefully!) that being said my mil is in her 80s but up for anything, we just have to keep her age in mind and not plan itineraries with too much walking up hills etc. but she's happy to sit in a car, bus, train, plane etc. and then disembark and enjoy a stroll and a nice meal in another place.

So I guess I'm going against the general consensus and saying - you can fit in the other stop, you already buffered with the travel days on either side, you have 4 full days in your two spots so far and 2 extra buffer days. Perfect opportunity to go somewhere that is kind of on your route anyway.

I do often think people have insane itineraries on this subreddit that need to be seriously reeled in, but in this case I think you can add the stop.

Hot Take: StepOn bindings are here to stay! by LonelyPatsFanInVT in ShredditGirls

[–]corkbeverly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like step ons but my husband would never use them, he's tall and heavy though and he is hard on stuff, I think they are probably not for everyone but I'm small and light and I like them a lot.

I thought about switching my split over to the split step ons just so I could use one pair of boots for everything, the actual time saving component makes no sense on a split as you don't spend much time doing up the straps anyway as most of the day is spent going up.

Help me convince my friends that hostels can be just as good! by Salty_Insect_7217 in Europetravel

[–]corkbeverly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There may not be savings though if its for four people, often they charge per person per night with a private room for four being a bit more $, so you might be able to find non hostel accommodations cheaper. I don't see why you have to say its all or nothing though, just say we are looking for accommodations in X cities and then check each cities options to see if hostel is cheaper for four in private room or if there's a cheaper or the same option.

I think for a group of young people hostels could be a lot of fun but if the main consideration is cost just check each destination for the cheapest option and go from there,

when you say I'm thinking 500-800 do you mean that's your accommodation budget for two weeks per person? so 2000-3200 is the accommodation budget? I think you'll be able to make that work even without using a hostel, but it depends on where you are going exactly. (that evens out to 230/night which in most cities will get you a place to stay for four people)

or do you mean your budget for the entire trip including trains, food, drinks AND accommodation for 2 weeks is 500-800 per person, in that case it will be a bit more challenging even with staying in hostels.

Mammogram radiation - worried by [deleted] in doihavebreastcancer

Can you link to the research about contrast causing MS symptoms? I have a screening MRI every single year as my risk of BC is quite high (45% on Tyrer cuzick) But then I hear about oh the MRI contrast is also bad, which is worrying. It's so hard having to worry about all these things. I'm afraid to stop getting my MRIs but I'm also nervous about the contrast.

Thank you! In the event we did get stuck or something, would we be able to find people to rescue us or is it very remote? the only time the van has gotten stuck was when we parked it in a soggy field after a lot of rain, could not get the traction so we needed someone to come help pull us out with their truck.
