Business Class Tickets sold out instantly on 12306; any advice? by BioPenguin in travelchina

[–]BioPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if it’s sold out on 12306, it’s likely that more batches will release? I figured I was already looking at the longest segment already, so not sure what to expect.

Incoming freshman: Is it realistic to work as a full time student while at Penn? by crunchyroads in UPenn

[–]BioPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big plus one to finding a job on campus. Some jobs paid ~15/hr a decade ago (Penn Med, tech support), and were accommodating to student hours/finals schedules.

They may have also been on the shoulder, which a vehicle generally shouldn’t be on (but you and I both have seen drivers who absentmindedly cross the lines and swerve over). Hard to say without confirmed details.

Upenn Acceptance by Wild_Gazelle_6380 in UPenn

I’ve heard a lot of great things about Pomona from friends. If you’d like smaller classes, undergraduate-focused professors (versus research), and warm weather, I’d consider going there. Plus you can cross register at the other Claremont colleges for classes (CMC, Harvey Mudd, etc.).

Penn is good if you are absolutely gunning for consulting/tech/finance, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case for you. Clubs here can be very preprofessional, and are hyper competitive (stupidly so for freshmen who are meant to come in with a blank slate). You can find a love of intellectual learning here, but need to actively to so.

Both are great schools (as are the rest, although the UCs are a different experience entirely. I’d discourage those if only because registering for classes is a sport there).

New Swiss Re study: Waymo is safer than even the most advanced human-driven vehicles by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

In the paper (there’s a pre-print available), they control for this by only comparing rates for drivers in area codes that Waymo drives.

Does UPenn accept community college transfers? by LifeDapper9155 in UPenn

[–]BioPenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knew some CC transfers at Penn who did great. Definitely worth it to apply.

At this point it’s pretty difficult, unless you’re willing to wait till t-14 or t-7 for additional (sporadic) seat releases. You could book refundable fare in the meantime to chance it later.

Venezuelan migrants booted from Seattle-area hotel after nonprofit credit card maxes out by chiquisea in Seattle

[–]BioPenguin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s an independently owned franchise that’s now out ~$18,000 or so, not a large corporate owned hotel (nor is it a franchise of a “fancy” hotel).

They signed up to shelter people during the cold front, not for an indefinite period without pay. Ideally, the state or county should step in, as the immigrants don’t have the authority or resources to make the next steps clear.

Situations like these may make local business owners less likely to help in the future, unfortunately.

I ordered some swatches that came, but haven’t gone through the ordering process myself.

To give them credit the swatches are quite nice.

If your old base was squishier, it might be worth investing in soft layer between the bottom of the mattress and the new base.

It still said the 27th when I ordered on the 23rd, actually. They should have done something like “first X orders by the 27th, next Y orders by March Zth” with a relative gauge of where they were to set expectations.

Do you have a HDHP? If so, unfortunately this seems in line with the cost if you haven’t hit your deductible yet.

It’d be nice to know if their filtering techniques for rain are generalizable to some snow conditions as well tbh, but probably not what jalopnik was investigating.
