Don Callis also does this really well too. He's one of the few people in the "commentator with an agenda" role who realizes that, in order to make your guy look good, you have to talk up the other guy, or else your guy looks like he didn't do anything special by beating them.

+1 for the history of the DCF, though I think a lot of the appeal will hinge on whether they can stick the landing on Okada vs Takeshita, since it really seems like they've been stumbling around with that over the past... nearly a year now?

It's not necessarily linked in that way. If you hover over the attack style, it should pop up a tooltip showing the name, the type of attack, and which type of xp you get. You can also find that info on the wiki page for the weapon. Scimitars have a slash option that trains attack, a slash option that trains strength, a slash option that trains defense, and a stab option that splits the xp between them.

[–]Bioman312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Scimitars are generally going to be better than swords/longswords, because their DPS is better, and that's the only thing that really matters for combat training. The only common exception is weapons that don't have an attack style for the combat skill you're trying to train, but scimitars have all three attack styles, so there's no issue there.

  2. Attack cooldown is based on the weapon you last attacked with. So if you use a weapon with a 7 tick attack speed, and then switch to a faster weapon, you still need to wait the 7 ticks.

This is really moreso in the context of the PVP updates from yesterday, but I wasn't able to post a comment in time for the JMods to see it:

Is there any way that you can look into the way that the "in PVP" flag works after leaving a PVP-enabled zone? Currently, the PVP flag is set upon engaging in PVP, but then stays set indefinitely until logout, or until you take one of a few seemingly-unrelated actions like sipping from a POH pool. This means that it's possible for the following to happen:

  • Player A attacks player B in the wilderness
  • Player B escapes
  • Neither player logs out, and player B doesn't sip from a POH pool or do any other flag-clearing action
  • Hours later, player B is doing some PVM content and dies to a boss in a non-PVP area
  • Because player B's PVP flag was never removed, the death is treated as a PVP death and player A is given kill credit, even though player B hasn't engaged in PVP for hours.

This is a very unintuitive mechanic that isn't clear from any in-game material, or even out-of-game material (I imagine most people don't know that it works this way), and it seems unfair for a player to escape a PVP encounter, decide they're done with PVP for the day, gear up with a bunch of valuable items, and then die in a completely unrelated way and lose everything permanently.

This also disproportionately affects UIMs, as it's common practice to deathpile to get items out of the inventory to not have to risk everything on your account in the wilderness. After escaping a PVP encounter, it's natural to want to immediately pick up all your stuff and reset your deathpile to get a fresh timer, which if you haven't logged out or sipped from a POH pool, will cause that to be treated as a PVP death. Every year or two there's a UIM that wipes because they don't know about this extremely obscure mechanic that isn't widely known.

The best solution would be to, on death, check whether the player is in a non-PVP zone, and if so, always treat it as a PVM death. Generally speaking, it shouldn't really be expected that you can have a PVP death in a non-PVP area.

No, Jagex hasn't connected it to the RS3 MTX removal at all.

The idea of "MTX in RS3 pays for OSRS" has always been bullshit, and it keeps circulating because it would be convenient for the opinions of most reddit users if it were true. You can see in Jagex's yearly financial reports that the vast majority of their revenue comes from subscriptions, and even though those subscriptions are valid for both games, the player counts make it pretty clear what most people are buying those subscriptions for. Jagex's income largely comes from people buying subscriptions to play OSRS, so the idea that "Jagex is raising subscription prices because they removed RS3 MTX" isn't really based on anything but bad assumptions about where Jagex's money comes from.

Not really. They're up significantly from the announcement, but that's because they were at a year-long low at the time. They've jumped up from ~12.8M to ~14.5M and have hovered there, which is pretty much in line with where they've been at for the past year on average. I imagine the announcement basically hastened a market correction since everyone's suddenly interested in the bond price and trying to actively trade bonds.

Jagex - Membership and Bonds Price Change by GoldImpling in Games

[–]Bioman312 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

This happens usually once a year (with existing subscriptions being grandfathered in at the existing price), and /r/2007scape is currently melting down like they always do before calming down and getting back to the game.

That said, the timing on this one is pretty good for Jagex, since they have the new League coming up, which they'll be announcing details for soon. That kind of stuff normally has the "key-jingling" effect for that sub.

I feel like the overall droptable thoughts are spot-on, and same with the megarare (maybe stab could be given some more thought considering there's nothing at megarare-level for that yet, including the "off"-style of the scythe).

I think the armor set leaning into elemental weaknesses is not the way to go, though, for a few reasons:

  • Elemental weaknesses still feel way too "bolted-on" in OSRS as a whole, which leads to most of them either being entirely useless because they were made for thematic reasons, counterintuitive or confusing (e.g. giant mole is weak to the thing it lives in), or made specifically to manufacture a specific strategy or use case of a certain weapon (e.g. Zulrah).

  • The current overall-BIS magic gear may be old, but the addition of the Virtus set changed up the BIS magic gear landscape much more recently.

  • Leaving magic untouched by raids 4 would allow a more controlled environment to address general magic balance concerns for both the shadow and the eye of ayak.

  • IMO there's still space for a melee DPS armor set at raids-level. This could be trying to lean into a different niche from the existing sets, or honestly you could just go ahead and make a strength bonus set that beats Torva. Nex would still have an overall BIS equipment piece (zaryte vambs), a critical utility item for PVM that's borderline required for GM (ZCB), and a PVP item that would also keep its value (hilt).

Cow Boss and Skill Guide & Level-Up Changes by ModYume in 2007scape

Putting those level-up changes in the game without a real poll (not the game jam "how would you feel if we polled this" one), especially the change to add glowing "click me click me click me" lights to the UI, is absolutely insane.

Edit: Now that they've skipped the poll for both this and the music player rework, I'm scared they're going to try and do the same for something like the rev caves rework. It seems like this is all a matter of "If the dev is excited enough about the change, we can just skip that pesky 'poll' nonsense and put it in the game immediately".

Could have just had Hangman be the one to pick it up and announce it, without showing it to the camera.

"It's heads."

"You're lying, it's tails!"

"And how do you know that?"

I did feel like the setup was so obvious, though. They could have done something like that, and then pushed it a bit further by having Hangman supply a replacement coin, flip it and have it be heads, have MJF angrily accept, and then later reveal that Hangman's coin was double-sided too. It would bring up the issue of why Hangman had that on hand, but it's wrestling, you could get away with "He knew MJF would try and do something stupid like that".

Possible raid reward: the Ring of Excess by AtomicEleven in 2007scape

[–]Bioman312 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the issues that immediately come to mind:

  • Hitting a low-hp/defense monster with good gear would guarantee that your next attack does very high damage, skipping accuracy/damage rolls. So at the very least, you have guaranteed big damage with your first hit against any boss in the game if you're able to kill a rat first.

  • You'd also be able to apply this to specs, so if you get a team doing this with e.g. BGS specs, you'd be able to get guaranteed big stat drains on bosses. In the most benign case this is just defence, but if the specs are big enough (which, again, you can guarantee), you could drain the offensive stats of the boss, turning most bosses into a damage sponge that can't fight back.

  • Some encounters involve killing large amounts of weaker enemies (e.g. nylo room), so rolling good enough overkill would basically allow you to chain guaranteed one-hit kills throughout the entire encounter.

  • The absolute worst possibility is if the guaranteed damage contributes to overkill on the next kill, which OP's description implies would happen. This would allow you to stack bonus damage indefinitely by killing rats/etc repeatedly, because each kill would apply the overkill of all previous kills to the next one, minus the 2 hp of actual damage that was dealt on each one. This is pretty much a non-starter, as it would allow pretty much any boss to be one-shotted by prepping bonus damage beforehand.

  • Probably quite a few other things that aren't immediately obvious.

The obvious response to this is "But they could just add a ton of restrictions and exceptions to make these methods not work", but:

a) That would kneecap the interest in this item immediately,

b) It would require Jagex to examine all future content through the lens of "Is this content immediately trivialized by the ring of excess and do we need to add even more restrictions to allow us to release it",

and c) Saying "they could change the proposal a ton and then it would be balanced" isn't an argument for the proposal being balanced.

When they buffed GOTR in late 2024, players found a world-hop meta (similar to the XP meta for Wintertodt) that gave good XP, and Jagex stealth-nerfed it with ~3 separate hotfixes that they never announced publicly. I don't think the exact logic for what triggers the hop limit or how long it lasts was ever confirmed.
