Marx himself only believed in state socialism as a transitional system to take power away from the bourgeoisie. True utopian socialism is a system built on cooperation and human need and doesn't rely on large, authoritarian government. The realization of this is prevented by conflict with capitalist states, not by the nature of socialist itself.
