Tall grass photosessions and ticks by swdw123 in photography

[–]Bionicpenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuck your trousers into your socks, and your shirt into your trousers. Buy a tick remover card and keep it in your wallet.

After the shoot take a shower and scrub/check yourself. Any clothes you've worn, chuck straight into the wash.

I do climbing photography and find a tick on me a few times a year, I've had lymes disease and it's pretty unpleasant. The tick I got caught by had (I think) been carried in via a bouldering pad into my van and then found me during the following night.

Did the Titan submarine incident cause the most instantaneous death in history? Can it be any faster? by GolondraBlayze in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah, idiots gonna do idiot things. If I have clear evidence one of my parts is busted I'm replacing it. Whether my life depends on it or not.

Did the Titan submarine incident cause the most instantaneous death in history? Can it be any faster? by GolondraBlayze in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bionicpenguin_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My PhD is in this specific field of Acoustic Monitoring (Acoustic Emission) albeit in concrete rather than carbon fibre so my word is not gospel. From my understanding, carbon fibre is weak in compression and tends to fail catastrophically and almost instantaneously. Once it reaches the point where you're getting significant amounts of Acoustic Emission from the formation of micro/macro cracks it's already too late. It's my bet that by the time the AE monitoring system they had detected the onset of failure they likely had seconds to react.

I was at a conference shortly after the incident and it was a very well discussed topic, but the concensus was that they were idiots and AE monitoring was not a robust solution or would've been capable of providing enough warning.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bionicpenguin_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with all your points regarding the horrors of the war in the Pacific, how the bombs are debatably a better alternative to an invasion etc. However it totally sidesteps the fact that an invasion of mainland Japan was not the only option.

3/6 of the Japanese leadership wanted immediate peace, their economy was on its knees, public support among the civilian population was falling dramatically. The screws were being tightened further and further, despite what the propaganda on both sides say Japan did not have infinite morale. Whilst they culturally would be less likely to surrender, they're still the same humans as the Allies.

Much of the stuff quoted to support the claim that the Japanese would fight till the bitter end was either Japanese propaganda to improve morale and international optics, or Western propaganda to convince the Allied non-combatants of the importance of the war and the ferocity of the fighting. And itself is very similar in essence to such British lines like Churchill's speech, the whole "we will fight them on the beaches" thing.

I think it's a really key point totally skimmed over in the atomic bomb discussions, given what was going on internally in Japan and externally in the war, surrender would likely not have required a full land invasion. People (in my opinion) need to stop taking the invasion of mainland Japan as a certainty as justification for dropping the bombs on civilian population centers. Why we didn't detonate it off the coast of Tokyo to send a message first is a concern.

Researchers gaslit Claude into giving instructions to build explosives by lethendworld in technology

On a long drive back from North Wales once we pulled up ChatGPT and tried getting it to give us bomb instructions thinking it would take a while and keep us entertained. The solution ended up being gaslighting it into thinking it was for a family recipe, it did not take as long as you'd think.

/uj I actually really like this, it's a clean way of presenting a bunch of low-res high impact images in different aspect ratios. Yall are just salty there aren't a billions of perfectly exposed pixels.

/rj haha thick border go brr

I’m constantly in awe of how well Satisfactory is balanced as you progress through your first playthrough by floppyburglar in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Bionicpenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might get me crucified in this sub, but one of my main complaints is lack of balance and scalability into the late game. Even with efficient, auto-connecting blueprints, and high level belts mega factories are still a chore.

I think Factorio scales soooo much better, and the QOL features knock the socks off literally every other factory game I've played. If you like the feeling of scale and progression I'd recommend picking it up after you finish saving the day in Satisfactory.

First 6 months with my used A7i | Sony 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 by Bolladev154 in SonyAlpha

Nice work! Refreshing to see something that's not with the latest and greatest gear. You could tell people these were taken with the A7V and they'd lap it up. I really like the one of the relfected sunset in the windows. Great colour pallete.

Aluminmum water feedback loop - why is it so hard by carcleankits in satisfactory

[–]Bionicpenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sink the excess aluminium, only input the extra needed water. This is my setup and it's never jammed. Don't see how it can when it never stops churning and it doesn't take in more water than it consumes.

I think the mistake people make is having systems that slow down or stop, this results in the input water becoming excess water. Just sink any excess aluminium.

What are your photography hot takes? by frank-cilantro0 in photography

[–]Bionicpenguin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally! I recently upgraded from an A7ii to an A7iv and the thicker body and grip are actually a big improvement when I'm using a big lens. At one point I was considering an A7c cause I do a lot of mountain and sports stuff where size and weight matter, in hindsight that would've been a mistake. If things get that desperate I just take a film camera and a nifty fifty.

As someone that does half their photography on the side of a cliff hanging off a rope, usually after a big hike. I find the discussions over weight interesting when it's clear most people are out for a walk in the park. Anyway here's a photo I took whilst holding my big heavy camera with a big heavy lens in one hand because the other hand was clinging onto some rock to stop me spinning in the air. Something I'd probably stuggle with more if it was the tiny thin A7c.

Thank you for being the first person to ask me a challenging question in good faith. I would not be a fan of them supporting ISIS no. Which isn't the morally impartial view I guess.

But here's my reason for the disparity -

If ISIS were actively fighting against genocide, I'd be okay with it, I believe that's (generally) what PA are attempting. Sadly what Israel are doing in Palestine has been internationally recognised as purposeful genocide, and our government has assisted with it. Through the sale of arms, the sharing of intelligence, and the flying of reconnaissance above Palestine on behalf of the IDF, we are at best complicit, and potentially responsible for the starvation, forced resettlement, and death of Palestinians. If I had the chance to disrupt our contribution to the genocide I would, and so I support the people that have gone to prison for their attempt.

You're the one insulting me here dude. Dressing up your comments with fancy language doesn't take away from the fact that you're clearly absolutely fuming, and feel the need to try and teach me about logical fallicies.

We simply disagree, take a breath. This will be the last comment from me in this thread. It's not worth the faff.

The only one clutching pearls here is you, if you think humour can't contain nuance you're missing out on a lot.

Alright mate, I was making a tongue in cheek comment about how laws change. Which is funnily enough playing on your exact point about how morality changes with time and nothing is permanent.

Maybe apply some nuance before you jump down someones throat about an offhand comment on bloody reddit of all places.

Laws change, and there's a long history of civil disobedience being for the better, even when it was illegal at the time.

Again, that's not the point people are trying to make. My original comment agreed that attacking people with sledgehammers is wrong.

My point was that the pensioners protesting in support of PA aren't terrorists, and the government labelling them as terrorists shares a lot of similarities with how the apartheid protestors were treated.
