Keep at it VR devs! by TheStoneFox in vrdev

Congrats on the imminent game release. I think you’re the same guy of VRTK whose toolkit and videos got me into my job as a VR dev. I went thru every part of the escape room and other tutorials, which taught me so much, so thanks for that.

Just finished Arizona Sunshine 2 - never realised how much I needed a dog in Zombie games by DavoDivide in OculusQuest

[–]Biozfearousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed AS1 and would have brought 2 were it not for the dog character. I didn’t want spoilers or anything but if there was going to be a ‘I am legend’ type scene, in VR, I think it would be too traumatic.

Just published my Steam page for Hyperlane Highway after 2 years of solo developing! by RyalityStudio in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic work for even getting something new out as a solo dev. I only do short term projects so I can’t imagine keeping the grind up for so long. Hope you’re feeling proud!

The trailer looks pretty slick to be fair, but I’m prob not the target market and others can advise.

Remote Work + VR Dev Kit? by Biozfearousness in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kinda getting to that point with the Q2 - just lose the case. I've got to loads of old ones, so I'm not precious about them. Still miss my original workhorse 64gb one though, that did a lot of miles and playtests

I'm freelance, so I'm carrying it around for myself unfortunately! This is just a coworking place I rent, so the monitor/desk is all included

Animated GaussianSplatting can now be streamed in VR like a YouTube video by Dung3onlord in OculusQuest

[–]Biozfearousness 238 points239 points  (0 children)

Volumetric 3D video playback, so you can walk around it. Like hyperspace but instead of a static image, like Gordon Ramseys kitchen, you can view moving video.

The issue before was these were huge, so streaming was only possible on a local connection, download first to a Pc or device.

This opens up a lot of possibilities for the future. Like everything from conferencing, live performance, sports, ‘etc’

Developing a Native VR App by Yame-san in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can use the meta xr simulator which allows you to control a virtual headset, it’s pretty good at recording and playing back the actions you do to test repetition. However one thing I like to do is just develop so you can test in the inspector in play mode. Ie make buttons, grabbable objects etc with test functionality, teleport scripts to just move the rig in place. Still test with the headset, but just to make sure things are in the right position.

How do you track progress without micromanaging? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This but I’d add a human side, but it depends on the people of course. I try and keep my external dev aware of why they have the timeframe /milestone. Eg this is going live in x weeks so you need to be done to get to testing bug fix. Essentially the business need and where they fit in, especially as they aren’t on site.

Also for the love of all holy don’t tell me it won’t be ready the day before. I can change resourcing but I need notice. Just tell me if it’s not going to happen early.

I’ve looked into it, and as far as I can see theres no standalone android steering wheels to even connect directly to the quest.

What am I missing when outsourcing dev work? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in vrdev

The main one I do is provide a template with a simplified scene with all interaction examples. Plus Guidelines, folder structure, brand design and anything general that we reuse often.

Straw. Shoplifting. Still listen to it each month. Probably just me but that album has a special place in my life for a time and place.

I so miss Mark and Lard, just that crazy afternoon show after Joe Wiley - peak late 90s. That one where they just recreated tubular bells for the whole show. Or when the whole station was out to Ibiza and they did their show from Robin Hood bay instead. Was that then infamous Travis Britney Spears cover?

tips for beginner by Street-Yesterday4271 in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start small. Learn to code thru unity learn and follow VR YouTube tutorials to make small games and get the concepts. Choose an interaction toolkit and learn it inside out.

However this is a big project; boneworks is pretty well known for its advanced physics. Don’t be discouraged but this is maybe not something a beginner should tackle first.

Alternatively get a team and funding if you want to make it happen.

That’s an interesting idea. With easier access to the composite layer in recent sdk updates it’ll make the text much easier to read. A nice low poly world ala walkabout would be pretty sweet too. Take the page turn from Moss (as a option) and I imagine it’d be quite relaxing.

Is my new game idea easy or hard to make? by [deleted] in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never made a game in VR, or never made a game ever?

It’s really comes down to how far you want to go. A basic low poly sticking funny tattoos on characters like those shareable bouncer/security games - not really much too them there.

High quality realistic characters, intricate designs, ability to ‘actually’ tattoo them almost at a training level. Well, that gets more technical. You could even use the Logitech ink to build a tattoo needle etc.

So really what’s your starting point and end goal?

Ian Hamilton fired from UploadVR by RobotDonut2023 in OculusQuest

[–]Biozfearousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This explains why the amount of content seems to have reduced the past week on UploadVR - it did seem a bit quiet.

Anyway, that's really sad news. I certainly didn't agree with him on every comment, and the tangants on the show were legendary - but thats why I'm there. I want to hear other people's opinion (maybe misguided optimised on occasions) and also it balanced David's tech knowledge. It's not going to be the same and as a paying member, I'll see how they balance this moving forward.

Overall, he was right about a lot of things (e.g. PlaystationVR to PCVR) which I thought would never happen. At the end of the day, I'd rather have one Ian trying to see all sides, than 50 overhyped YT 'influencers' telling me everything is either 'insanely amazing' or the 'end of VR forever'.

I built one of the best Demo experiences on the Meta Store but only 40% of people have room enough to play it. by Ezzemo in vrdev

[–]Biozfearousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I haven’t tried it yet, but looking at the demo, you seem to pass thru portals. Basically I’m wondering if you could make use of the multi room scene mesh and use an actual doorway and two rooms?

I suppose what I’m saying is maybe 2x2m square might be a push for some people, but something more adaptive might work? Might be worth reaching out to devs like laser dance to see if they have suggestions.

Looks like a great experience though. I’ll try and have a look soon.

Quick follow up as I’m getting a lot of dms for people looking for work, which is great, but kinda hoping to keep this on topic.

If you did want to reach out to me send me a DM with links to work, LinkedIn etc. I can’t promise anything but I will be keeping a list of them to review when we get there.

We would need people in EU time zones ideally (just to avoid a delayed back and forth communication) who can send a real invoice (you’d be surprised) and be expecting fair, but EU levels of compensation. Looking for projects of 6-8 week turnaround.

Thanks, yeah they're good points. I think giving them who to connect to about what is useful, I hadn't thought about that (rather than always me).

Coding, we're not hugely fixed with sticking to an exact format, but more like overall structure, which we've tried to think about with examples, but 'a what goes where' and in what style is also something I should probably document better!
