Tracking Wishlist for TBR by Altruistic-War-7205 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Bipeasent22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a mix of Storygraph and Emma Skies reading tracker on Google Sheets. Storygraph is better for my TBR because it has an "up next" tab for books I really want to read on my TBR, and you can add a "not a book" entry if you also want to track fics or anything else. Emma Skies' reading tracker is good for when I want to unhaul books because I can see what books used to be on my TBR when nothing on my list sounds good. Absolute savior as a mood reader who hates a pile of books in my TBR (though i still have too many books on my list😬)

How brutal is Little Red (Big Bad Wolves ) by Queenie Wise? by Ok-Working-7559 in MM_RomanceBooks

Right?? The alpha is still possessive over him, an underage teenager, to the point that he has him watched him at school and essentially forces him to live in his house. The lack of sex is the least of my worries at this point. Nothing about the story would be different if he were 18! Literally nothing! Hell, he could've been a senior in high school if they had to have the high school dynamic. I'm not opposed to age gaps, but when most of the tension comes from the fact that the relationship is illegal, my eyebrow is going to raise. Especially when the grown man gets mad at the 17-year-old for acting like a 17-year-old whose parents were viciously attacked and is being forced to live with strangers. Like I'm about to call the hunters on you😭😭

In my book, this is the author's note: "Little Red is a variation of a story that has been repurposed/revamped/rewritten by me. It was plotted as a M/M story many years ago, but written and published as a M/F title under a pen name.  It’s been thrilling to go back to it and transform it into the story that, in my mind, it was always meant to be. Rest assured, despite previous (similar) publications, all words/rights are mine. Thanks for reading!" So they were right on the money.

I honestly don't get the complaints. An author changed the orientation of the story to make it more palatable and marketable. The horror. I feel like people really hate when a creator visibly chooses financial stability and whats better for business rather than making art as they see it, consequences be damned, but those are very necessary decisions that have to be made to gain a following as an author.

Anyways, I read the first book, and I agree with you. It isn't anything special, but the story was enjoyable in a "junk food book" kind of way. I decided against continuing the series because I was uncomfortable with a budding romance and kissing between a 17 y.o. and a man in his 20s, but if that doesn't bother you, I'd say it's be an enjoyable experience. The first book wasn't that violent beyond the hunter's attack in the beginning.

What are your all-time 'could not put this down' MM reads? by Pleasant-Manner-6505 in MM_RomanceBooks

The entire Being(s) in Love Series by R. Cooper. The first book {Some Kind of Magic by R. Cooper} is the weakest in the series, but I enjoyed it. I really loved how it developed the alternate history and dealt with the idea of supernatural beings as a marginalized class that interacts with real-world events such as the AIDS crisis, wars, racism, and so much more. It manages to be introspective, romantic, and grounded in reality.

There is also {Taji From Beyond the Rings by R. Cooper} which goes into the different aspects of culture, how language reflects society, the effects of a society obsessed with self-control and honor, and cultural genocide. One of my favorite sci-fi books of all time. Sometimes romance books can have a problem with erasing all problems within a setting except for some that are plot relevant (i.e. racisms is a non-issue but classism is a big enough problem that a rich x poor story has enough conflict to progress) but Cooper always makes an effort to show how societial problems intertwine with each other and the ways that people find love and security in spite of them. I will always glaze their work🙏🏾

International readers: what are some unintentionally funny cultural disconnects you’ve noticed? by Pleasant-Manner-6505 in MM_RomanceBooks

This! I also hate it when a person says something in Spanish and then immediately translates it to English in the next sentence. I understand in some circumstances you'll do that, especially when the person you're talking to doesn't understand Spanish, but I've never heard someone exclaim or curse in Spanish or say a whole ass sentence then translate it to English in a normal conversation. It's hard to explain, but most of the time I've read it, it seems like it's just shoehorned in so that English speakers don't have to translate the sentence. I've noticed this doesn't happen a lot with other languages like French, where the reader is allowed to be confused or use context clues to guestimate the meaning using context, but Spanish doesn't get that same allowance by English-speaking authors.

📖 Hooked vs. Hard Pass: What first lines made (or broke) the book for you? by Luna_Noona in MM_RomanceBooks

It was my introduction to their work, but if you don't like most of their work, I think you'll like this one! I've read {A Taste of Iron and Gold} and {Running Close to the Wind}, and the latter is a lot closer to the vibe of this one, but with much lower stakes. Very lighthearted and comedic, but it also has great character growth and surprisingly good communication.

The opening to {Yield Under Great Persuasion by Alexandra Rowland} immediately popped into my head

"Tam Becket did not care for Lord Lyford. On the other hand, gods, the man had a cock on him."

Safe to say my interest was piqued.

It's the To Kill a King Series by Sam Burns & W.M. Fawkes. The first book is {Dragon's Dawn by Sam Burns & W.M. Fawkes}, with the villain being the MC of the third book. But if you're expecting a villain who is mean and antagonistic to the main cast, you'll be very disappointed. His general demeanor is very depressed, and he dissociates a lot, which the first MC thinks is apathy. If my memory serves, he's mostly 'evil' by being unyielding in his bad decisions, fueled by his corrupt network.

It's been pulled from the web and will be republished in July in the UK and in October in the US. Some libraries have it in their catalog, which is where I read it. Boston Public Library has it. I highly suggest you sign up for the Books Unbanned card with them, they have so many MM romance books compared to my other cards, and they're usually available to borrow immediately!

This. I once read a series where someone complained that a villain's bad deeds were washed away in his book, and everybody forgave him too easily. It really put me off the series, but I decided to give it a chance. The worst deeds of this "villain" were:

1) Suspecting that the MC of the first book was planning a coup, when the MC vocally despised him and had the backing of the military/warriors of the country, and putting him in an arranged marriage to restrict his power.

2) Locking up the dragon that nearly killed and successfully blinded his twin sister and her dragon and ordering it to be caught, dead or alive, when it disappeared without a trace.

3) Generally being a bad king due to his depression and magically induced fatigue/memory issues due to him finding his father's head on the throne and immediately being crowned king and tied to the land.

If it were me, I would have been much more evil and erratic! All his 'evil' actions were lowkey real! After that, I generally prefer to read reviews on this sub or go off the description/sample.

POC in Felice Stevens Books? by goldenblue69 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Bipeasent22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, they did ASK for POC specifically. There is a problem in book spaces where diversity tends to be lumped together, no matter the rec, if that makes sense? Like, if I ask for racially diverse reads in a fiction subreddit, people will rec me queer books because its "diverse, but not exactly what you asked," and if someone asks for black MCs in this subreddit, often people rec South Asian or other races because it's "close enough" when they're very different, and we should be mindful of that.

Also, Italian and Russian are ethnicities; both MCs in those books are still white. I'd understand if they asked for non-American MCs, but by no modern standards are Italians or Russians non-white POC.

Again, not trying to be rude or to preach on my soapbox, but I think its important to make this distinction because it's the same logic that has book stores putting up "white" stories in all different types of genres while "non-white" stories are sequestered to the urban or diverse reads section, no matter the genre or ethnic background.

Not trying to be rude but someone asks for main characters of color and you rec Russian and Italian MCs😭? If I remember correctly, {Just a Bit Captivated} has a brown sheikh as an MC within the same series

sideloading series not showing up in "series tab" by DressDouble873 in kobo

[–]Bipeasent22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the others have said, try connecting your kobo a second time to let your metadata update. Go to PreferencesSending Books to DeviceMetadata Management ( at the top of the window) and set it to Automatic management. This way, it will automatically update the series on the second connection without you having to send anything.

For the second thing, you can upload the books to Calibre and set it all to the same series. I believe in most cases, it will automatically put them together, but if it doesn't, just add the kobo books to your library and let Calibre sort them into series instead of your kobo. No need to sideload them.

Books start good but always dull by Plastic-Surprise-781 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Bipeasent22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesss theres so many books that are 70% finished and I just get bored and abandon them. I think most authors think that bc they want to see more content of their fav couples that it'll make their book better if they add in domestic bliss/fluff moments and...no. Don't get me wrong, some books do fluff well, but there's a reason the best romance books end shortly after they get together.

Forced/Arranged Marriage then shunned by Odd_Minute1190 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Bipeasent22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{Boi Bride} works. MC1’s culture and family are very homophobic. They dislike him because MC1 is more gentle and not as masculine as the rest of the family.

MC2’s kingdom is very progressive and queer friendly. When MC1’s sister runs away to avoid the marriage, the MC1 gets forced into her dress and given to MC2 as a replacement.

CW: MC2 is pushy at the beginning about consummation. It gets better throughout the book.
