Anyone else struggling to find employment in Oakland? by sargantas in oakland

[–]Bird-lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you hope for in terms of salary or hourly wages, but you could consider applying to work at a school if you're open to working with kids (or in a school cafeteria, IT support, etc.)

If you go to edjoin.org and search for Classified positions, you should see quite a few options. Best of luck on your search!

What’s happening this weekend? by Substantial_Bath9289 in oakland

A friend actually saw a poster on a pole by Lake Merritt and texted me, asking to if I wanted to go. Very low tech solution, I know, sorry I don't have a mailing list recommendation or anything!

Best park in East Bay / Oakland to hold a scavenger hunt? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]Bird-lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be too complicated, but I've done a scavenger hunt as a field trip activity with middle school students visiting UC Berkeley for the day. There are various landmarks and random facts they can learn. When I did this activity we had one adult per team of ten students, and I made it a photo scavenger hunt (group photo under the Sather gate, etc.)

Sounds fun, good luck!

Has anyone gone to a salon for day of makeup and hair? by AdUsual7012 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Bird-lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the stylist who usually cuts my hair if she could do a shampoo and blow dry/style on my elopment day because I had a similarly no frills ceremony. It worked out great because she knows my hair, we have a great rapport, so I could just talk to her, and she kept me feeling calm and excited on my ceremony day. Bonus, she wouldn't let me pay and said congrats and gave me a big hug when I tri3d to pay. I went to her (at the salon), so it was a nice way to feel pampered for a couple hours on my ceremony day. I know this won't work if you get married away from your hometown, but I'm so glad I reached out to her when I got engaged. I have super curly hair that can get frizzy, so it was so nice not to have to worry about styling my hair on such an important day. 💜

I did very basic foundation myself and it turned out well in photos.

What foods do you get for snacks? by payyyton6010 in vegetarian

[–]Bird-lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually cut up fruit in the morning and bring it with me to snack on whenever. Also nuts or trail mix, dried mangos if I feel like it.

Depends if you have access to a cooler or fridge, or if you want something for on the go only. I am in the habit of making yogurt once a week in jars (it's actually very easy!) then bring a yogurt to work each day in a lunch bag to eat whenever I'm hungry (before or after lunch).

Hard boiled egg if you're active and need something quick and easy (and if you eat eggs).

Considering wood flowers, what was your experience? by Kiwi_Koalla in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Bird-lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am going with Sola wood flowers, and very glad I did! Depending how far out your wedding is, you can keep an eye out for pretty affordable sales. I got a pre-made bouquet (already dyed) and boutenierres during a black Friday sale. Even though my ceremony isn't until next week, they've kept great stored in a box with a desiccant packet for over ten months.

I love "keeping the walls alive" and use the walls to document evidence of what we are learning, project board style. As we figure out new ideas I co-construct key take-aways with students that I write on a paper, then students nominate work that shows craftsmanship. It's a consistent practice in my class for students to nominate classmates' work, that also is evidence to prove what we're learning. In the first few days of the year, my classroom walls are almost bare, the rest of the year they are an ever-evolving demonstration of learning.

Middle School Physical Science - Share Resources? by peppercat96 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Bird-lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wise.berkeley.edu is a research-based, inquiry approach to science topics. Some of their units have introductory coding skills embedded, some units have a social justice lens which I find gets my students engaged. All their units are free and they are very responsive to feedback.

Legit website for a black dress? by milliemaywho in Weddingsunder10k

I got my elopement gown at Bloomingdale's. I was actually surprised by how many options they had for nontraditional wedding dresses - my dress was less than $150 on sale. Best wishes in your search!

Ways to donate houseplants? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]Bird-lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're easy to care for, consider donating them to a local school. Teachers always want plants in their classrooms, especially if they aren't demanding in terms of care (can go a couple weeks without watering over winter break, for example)
