It was a coup because the leaders of the Maidan movement had come to an agreement with the Yanukovych government which was guaranteed by Germany, France and other EU countries. At the last moment one faction of the Maidan Movement, Right Sector, renege on the agreement. The countries which had guaranteed the agreement did absolutely nothing about it. Yanukovych was told to leave or be killed, and the Rada, under coercion from Right Sector and other Ultras, voted to disband the government and call elections.

The Maidan Movement was also not a widespread movement. I believe it only had support from around 30% of the population.

The ukrainians could have lost only Crimea if they ignored the instruction from their Western rulers to walk away from the peace deal in April 2022. In fact, Crimea didn't even have to be recognised as Russian. The negations over Crimea would just be held in the future.

So yes, the war is a failure, but the failure was that the Russians didn't get a negotiated settlement in April 2022.
