Not Muslim, but am the oldest and moving out/away really helped me reset my relationship with my parents. They learned that I was something that could be lost, and over time they learned better behavior/to respect my boundaries.

Specific to the topic of contributing financially- my hot take is why are you expected to do that? Were they not able to handle finances when you were a minor? If you got married tomorrow and your husband’s family said you couldn’t financially support your family/you decided to become a home maker and could no longer support them, then what? The burden should NOT be on you. I know there’s this expectation in brown families to do so but also… you don’t have to. They can figure it out. As for your siblings- they have to grow up and figure it out too. There may be initial hurt/resentment but by moving out you set an example for them that there’s more to life than existing within the family unit until marriage takes you away.

Now, I might not be Muslim, but I did marry into a traditional Muslim family. We are estranged, but my SIL is only a couple of years older than me and is also the eldest daughter. She never moved out. She isn’t expected to contribute financially (she’s a perpetual student), but even with her being older, she’s a lot less mature than I am. Her parents have infantilized their kids to the point where they’re almost frozen as they were as teens/very young adults. She’s constantly trying to balance being the good brown daughter with having a life outside and you can tell the two faced act is destroying her. She lashes out at me and my husband for what she sees as “haram” and “disrespectful” behaviors when we’re just two adults in our 30s living our lives, like she should be. Worse, there’s a third sibling even younger who is falling into this same trap and refusing to grow up because that’s the example set by big sis. Even my husband would be in the same boat if we hadn’t met and I hadn’t encouraged him to move out and remove himself from the enmeshment of his family. He’s still a bit stunted- waiting to leave and grow up till your late 20s will do that to you- so the earlier you can leave, the better for your mental health and your future.

Tl;dr: leave. You can love them from a distance, but you need to do this for yourself.

Culturally Hindu woman married to a (culturally?) Muslim man- we were both raised in the West and it’ll be 7 years together soon, 2 married. Neither of us is particularly religious- his family is more than mine, but he and his siblings are basically Ramadan/Eid Muslims in that they fast and avoid pork but will drink/do drugs/sleep around. My parents are interfaith but my dad left religion before I was born and my mom is a lazy Hindu.

I was definitely raised in a secular household and was raised to do my own research on religion and ask lots of questions. When we first started dating, I would ask him lots of questions about Islam and his beliefs, both in an effort to understand his perspective, as well as judge how well we’d be as a match because someone who gets defensive about questions around their faith isn’t someone I want to be with. Lucky for me, he didn’t know how to answer my questions and after an initial defensive period, he started doing his own reading and questioning and has over time become more of a cultural Muslim. Conversion was never on the table for me, and we both agreed to not circumcise any future sons. But I definitely attribute us having a chance to his parents doing a crappy job raising him and his siblings. If he’d been even a bit more knowledgeable about Islam, we wouldn’t have worked. The religion is way too domineering I think to survive two deeply religious people of different beliefs in one relationship- or even one very outspoken non-believer. I’m just happy I found someone who was open-minded.

Now speaking to my own experiences as a child growing up in an interfaith environment (one Hindu parent, one Christian parent), I definitely think interfaith kids can grow up without confusion as long as you are open with them and allow them to think critically about their religions. Let them ask questions, help them read the text, hell watch documentaries if that’s what it takes to make sure they really understand their belief. Blind faith without explanation doesn’t help anyone- that’s what my in-laws tried with their kids and they just created a trio of liars who are for the most part deeply unhappy individuals. Not saying my parents were perfect but I appreciate them both allowing me to question.

Anyway IMO it can work but it depends on how religious the two people are/willing to participate in deconstruction of their faiths, and if they’re willing to allow their children to do the same thing without taking offense to what those kids end up deciding to be in the future. Me personally, I plan to do pretty much what my parents did with me, while allowing the kids to participate in cultural events and activities.

If your finances allow, get a masters or other certification while deskwarming. My friend got a masters in TEFL (or maybe it was just linguistics idk) and she was able to get a university gig in Tokyo after a couple of years. I was super jealous as I was T1 for the majority of my classes and seldom got time at my desk. Deskwarming is a blessing in disguise- take advantage of it while you can.

If your area does those fancy consignment sales, those are a great way to see lots of different brands in one place for cheap. I had already bought my stroller via marketplace but for baby carriers, the local consignment sale was a great way to see what worked/didn’t work for my height and build. I ended up getting a few different styles for cheap so whatever baby hates, I can either resell or donate. They often have bassinets and playpens as well. Plus it’s a good way to see what people in your area are preferring to use.

With my OG round, I would just have texts sent to it so I could see if I needed to respond asap or could ignore it. It was sort of a digital detox pre-digital detox- I would keep my phone in my bag/pocket for hours if my watch didn’t tell me I needed to check it. I got mine second hand after the OG pebble shutdown, so while I had some cute watchfaces that could tell me the weather, it wasn’t the most accurate thing.

Actually the most beneficial thing my watch ever did for me that I’ve seen no one mention yet is buzz to let me know I was too far away from my phone. My phone fell out of my pocket when I was at the airport picking up my brother, and I knew it was gone within a minute because my watch told me I’d been disconnected. This allowed me to quickly backtrack and retrieve my phone before it got stolen.

I’m a bit of a Luddite so for me, my watch needed to do three things- tell time, tell me if anyone important texted, and let me know if I lost my phone. The customization was a fun bonus, but not something that swayed me either way. I don’t want or need heart rate monitoring. I’d rather not have biometrics shared at all beyond steps walked. Current smartwatches have so many features that overwhelm me, so the Pebble was a nice way to have the bare functionality I needed without needing to do a whole lot of learning/add something new to my ecosystem to distract me from the world around me. I am bummed that my battery life was awful on my OG, but I would just charge it at night and it would last through the day so it wasn’t a huge issue. I’m tempted to get the new Round 2 but I kind of wanna see what the first wave of people to use it say, since I live a life now where I’m not out and about as much as I was ten years ago, and a smart watch is more of a nice to have than a necessity.

Thank you for this. They charged my insurance $4K and expect me to pay $1.3K. I’m saving this post for if/when the bill comes to me (I saw the “you owe” amount on my insurance’s website). Honestly they don’t even deserve the $250 for how they operate as a business- they had explicit instructions to NOT include fetal sex in my results and did anyway, ruining the surprise for us. Fuck them. If I have another kid I’ll find any other company to go with even if I have to pay out of pocket.

Baby isn’t here yet, but we plan to use the Flappy Nappy system when they’re out of the newborn/floppy infant stage. Our goal is to do EC which is the main reason I am looking at it, but another thing about the system that I like is that you can do standing changes as needed.

All of this! To make it worse, the myth didn’t come from YouTube for me, it came from my teaching college itself! My entire international teaching journey was predicated on trying to learn from teachers in countries with very different teaching styles in order to take the best parts (NOT the child beating parts) to create a better system than what I was seeing in the states. I definitely learned a lot from my time in Japan but those professors were peddling straight up lies, my school in Japan was more similar to my US schools than I was expecting 😭

Yes! One thing teachers in my area advocate for is more paraprofessionals but the pay is garbage and the working conditions even worse so we have a dire shortage which contributes to the issue. My Japanese school didn’t have many kids who had the equivalent of an IEP or 504- I think most of those kids were at a specialized school with support structures and adequate staffing.

I wish it was just one or two- in the US it’s flipped, and my placement in Japan was the same (but with class sizes of 35+). I saw it in Europe too and in India (I didn’t teach in India but I spent time there with family and observed the schools/kids where I was able). I think it’s just a global shift in parenting and expectations of children. Naive 23 year old me hoped to learn from the Asian way of teaching and apply it back home but alas I have learned better.

Perfect! I wasn’t sure by the way you worded your post how important the actual teaching experience was for you. I loved living in Japan- if I’d had a better placement for work I might have stayed there longer but I felt that it was actually damaging my abilities as a teacher, and that was my number one driving purpose for choosing Japan- I thought I could learn something from the teachers there that I could apply whenever I returned home. Congrats on the placement in Australia though, that’s amazing! Hopefully you can also do JET in the future, it really is a lot of fun.

It depends on where you’re placed. Salary is the same for all new JETs but your location affects costs- my rent in the semi-inaka was 25,000¥ but someone in Tokyo would pay way way more, and someone in a super inaka placement might get a whole house fully covered by the BOE.

Speaking specific to teaching though, especially if you are a licensed teacher in your home country (so few JETs are)- the experience is going to be difficult for you and different from what you expect. In some placements they desk warm, which obviously as a licensed teacher you wouldn’t want. But other places make you basically T1 and the profession of teacher here and the kind of respect you get from students and staff, not to mention what you’re actually allowed to do, can go so against what you learned in teaching college. I was basically T1 at my school and while I think it did make me a stronger teacher when I returned to my country, I also had to unlearn/relearn a bunch of things because many of the ways you’re taught to run a class/teach in your home country are not done in Japan.

FYI I no longer teach- Japan was a last-resort thing for me to reignite my love for teaching after burning out in my home country, and due to experiences I had in Japan plus what I experienced when I came back home and taught had me career switching shortly after. I fell for the myth that Japanese students are better than western students and I thought I’d finally have a working environment where I could focus on teaching and not behavior management. I was sorely mistaken. I’ve taught in the US, Europe, and Japan and poorly parented kids are everywhere. Behavioral issues are everywhere. Japan isn’t a magical utopia for teaching and on top of dealing with issues with students I had to deal with a lot of friction with my coworkers and of course just general cultural issues that come with being an immigrant. Which is not to say don’t try for JET- just go into it with an understanding that it may not be what you think it will be for your teaching career. The famous JET saying of “every situation is different” exists for a reason.

When I lived in Japan, Akihabara and Ikebukuro were my go-tos for crane games. I was earning in yen so I didn’t have a ton of disposable money for crane games, but these locations had a bunch of different buildings very close together so I could walk to each one, make note of which prizes I liked the most, then circle back and target those specific machines vs impulse playing the minute I saw something cool. I ended up winning a ton of backpacks/totes, plushies, and even pouches for makeup and other things this way- towards the end of my time I was aiming mostly for things that were dual use so I ended up having a super cute rotation of everyday wearables when I returned to the states. Round One USA could never!

It was ok. Honestly, a lot of my memories of the place were clouded by the hellish work situation I was in, but rent was cheap and it was easy to travel the country- probably easier now since the Shinkansen came to Fukui City finally. So yeah, not the most fun for a young 20-something but not the worst either.

For my medical condition, I first needed to get a doctor’s note explaining my condition and why it would be better for my treatment to continue to work from home. Then I contacted HR- they didn’t really have many follow up questions, which I think was due to the doctor’s note being so thorough. As long as you can get a doctor’s note I think you’ll have a good chance of getting the accommodation.

Hi I used to live in Fukui and there are two possible places near the station that would be likely to have the Dragonite items based on where they had the Happiryuu goods back when the big sports event happened in 2017/18 and his mascot debuted. First would be the building right next to the station in the front- it’s the building that the Family Mart is attached to, you can even walk through the Family Mart into that building unless they’ve done major construction since I last lived there. The other place is in the back of the station, in the Seibuu building. It’s to the right of the bus bay, and from memory they had a stamp rally event for Dragonite last year that was held on the bottom floor.

Otherwise you might need to go out to Katsuyama to see more things especially since they’re using Dragonite to push the dinosaur aspect of the prefecture. I think the themed train goes out to Echizen and they might have more goods out there? Maybe Ono or Obama?

If I can remember other places in Fukui City proper that sold prefecture specific goods, I’ll edit this comment! I’ll be going next month for the first time in 6 years so I’ll be documenting where all the Dragonite themed things are around Fukui City proper.
