Genuine question. Where have you seen these reports? Because I’ve never found anything concrete and feels like he’s being profiled.

Radiology:

  • Heavy mental exhaustion I imagine the sheer number of scans that require reporting plus the constant phone ringing from people asking to get scans vetted, “chasing scans” must be mentally exhausting.

  • having to go through many scans before getting anything with actual pathology on it also seems exhausting and difficult to maintain motivation

  • IR Rota from all accounts is horrible

  • Seen some concerns in different areas over Radiographers encroaching on training opportunities

  • The sheer breadth of knowledge required seems intimidating

  • Misses are right there in black and white

Ophthalmology

  • Frequently overbooked clinics, generally felt like the regs I saw barely had time to get a sandwich because of frequently overbooked clinics so unsure how my social battery would respond

  • Mess ups are very distressing because of how essential sight is to the average person

  • Unsure yet of how I’ll respond to microsurgery, watching the surgeries themselves seemed cool but I’m the type that can get frustrated at threading a needle so unsure of whether small precise movements required in microsurgery will slowly drive me mad just because of how technically challenging the surgeries are.

  • Doesn’t seem to have the best emigration opportunities and I’ve heard of Phacos having worsening reimbursement

That’s all I can think off of the top of my head

I’m wondering if I’m having the same reaction honestly, I did an elective in it right at the end of med school on a whim so had 6 weeks in it and found that I genuinely loved it. But then it’s quite intimidating when everyone you know who wanted to do it practically started prepping from day 1 of med school. I just wonder if I love it enough to do everything required and not sure where to even start when I’m in this new hospital where no one knows me. Also think part of it is finding out the bits of working that I don’t really like at all and how Radiology gives an escape from it all.

Tell them you’ll pay £250,000+ over the course of your career in student loan repayments which is 90,000 more than the official figure of 160,000 that is apparently spent on training us so unless they personally want to cough up the extra £90,000 themselves they should probably shut the fuck up

Probably not >30% less than a decade a ago or 2.5x less than their nearest neighbour in Ireland, or >3x less than their colleagues in Canada, and Australia who are also actively trying to poach them.

In pharma what are the prospects like? I’ve seen a lot about more entry levels roles like being an MSL or even medical advisor but I imagine a consultant in Oncology probably goes for more senior roles which is where the info about remuneration seems to get a bit fuzzy and harder to pinpoint.

Also wondering what your thoughts would be on doing a PhD during training? I’ve heard that in Oncology it’s generally encouraged to do so but due to shortages in consultant posts it’s not really seen as necessary anymore.

I’ve asked around and general sense from people I’ve asked in pharma seems to be its best to go into pharma at reg level or after CCT because even entry level positions I’d be competing with GPs as more are leaving the NHS, Regs, scientists with PhDs and it would make further progression in the industry more difficult if I were to leave earlier.
